The Panamanians control the Canal. There is no Chinese presence in the management or operation of the Canal. I was there in October, 2024. I know for a fact that the Chinese do not control or operate the canal. Here is a possible concern for the future. Chinese people have moved by the tens of thousands into Panama, and have become part of the culture. They have purchased or started businesses and they contribute as solid citizens. Most of the cargo moving through the canal is Chinese, and most of the transit fees are paid by Chinese firms. The nation has every reason to appreciate its Chinese-Panamanians, and the Chinese businesses that fill its coffers. As Chinese-Panamanians grow up, and go to high school and college, they may become part of the technical backbone of the Panama Canal Authority. This hasn't happened yet to a major degree, but is something that might be expected in the future. These Chinese-Panamanians will be bilingual and bicultural, and will have a primary allegiance to Panama. I don't think the US has anything to fear from the Chinese-Panamanians who have built new lives in Panama.

The US built the Panama Canal at great cost (both in dollars and lives). Panama has been given a great resource. They get taxes, jobs and tourism. My wife and I took the Panama tour years ago and it was great. My $ created jobs, tax revenue and prosperity locally (restaurants, hotels, taxis, etc.).. The US NEEDS to ensure China does not have control NOR EVER get control of that asset.

Another history lesson pertinent to this duscussion...when Japan invaded Mancheria China, Roosevelt enacted an oil embargo against Japan, his timing was uncanny , as in that instant Japan military only had enough oil reserves to last one year,... Roosevelt knew that , and he intended to stop any new oil to fall under Japanese control , Roosevelt was aware of two options the Japanese could take militarily, both were protracted , the american people / congress didn't want any part it ,...but the commander in chief was uneasy , he put all four of our most valuable U.S. military assets to sea our ( aircraft carriers ,,) unnoticed with Japanese attack at pearl harbor 1941...they carriers weren't their much to the dismay of Yamamoto.
