For those of you that just don't get it: This is the first civil aircraft to go supersonic over the continental United States. They are trying to be the first ever to carry commercial passengers supersonic over the continental United States. At 5:30 he says they didn't hear the sonic boom because it was so high. He was wrong. They didn't hear the boom because that's the whole premise that the company is working on; to go supersonic WITHOUT the sonic boom. Once that is proven, then they'll work on removing the civilian aircraft supersonic speed restriction, and instead it will be a civilian aircraft sonic boom restriction. So they'll be able to cross the US with commercial passengers at supersonic speeds, which will be another first achievement.
@mother86962 күн бұрын

Exactly correct. The FAA made a galactic mistake decades ago, enacting a commercial flight speed limit of Mach 1 over the continental United States. The FAA should have instead established a supersonic ground-level decibel limit for commercial aircraft, just like they impose during takeoff and landing. This ludicrously imposed flight speed limit, which was only imposed to restrict the British/French-made Concord from flying over the continental US, has succeeded only in hindering commercial supersonic aircraft development since the early 1970's.

Bro this is not about going mach 2. We know its possible its been done. Concorde was banned from flying because the sonic boom was damaging the infrastructures and the noise was well above the allowed decibel limits, on top of that the fuel efficiency was horrible and it was unprofitable for the companies. Not even USAF is allowed to go supersonic in residential, unless its for a reason.This new prototype is testing technology to allow it go go supersonic without producing the boom, or at least being way less silent around allowed dB limit and being fuel efficient at the same time. If its manages to achieve what they are testing supersonic jetliner will be back in commercial usage. We can make a new Concorde tommorow, technology is not lost, its 10 times above that, everything is about economic profitability.

I spent my engineering career in aerospace (now retired). The issue has always been the increased fuel consumption with increased speed. Hi Mach numbers requires low drag, so your fuselage is narrow with more limited seating. As Concord showed, you can do it, but there is no way around the high cost per seat. There is a limited market for high speed travel.

Should have had a Concorde Pilot on, would have been interesting to hear how it was for the pilot 40 years ago.

Wiki - On August 21, 1961, a DC-8 broke the sound barrier at Mach 1.012 (660 mph/1,062 km/h) while in a controlled dive through 41,000 feet (12,497 m) and maintained that speed for 16 seconds.

It might be hard to notice the supersonic transition from the air...but not on the ground!😊 I remember as a kid (in the mid 60's to early 70's) being surprised each time I heard a sonic boom! They were loud and shook things. They would certainly get your attention! I grew up not far from Griffiss AFB in Rome, N.Y. I heard

I hope it works and the flights can be affordable. People take planes for speed and as jets got more advanced they started getting a little slower than earlier airliners.

Early 70"s in the San Joaquin Valley, Lemore NAS was always blasting sonic booms.

You are a bit incorrect. Scott Crossfield was a civilian pilot when the X1 broke the sound barrier. He just put too big of a price tag on being the first. That’s why it was Yeager a military pilot. The project was a joint military civilian project.

Concorde was breaking the sound barrier half a century ago!

The British did it so long ago. What do they think Concord was? Concord did not have after-burners, it had super-cruise which did not need any kind of reheat.

The Concorde is an antique now, retired for good reason. It was as hard to maintain and fly as the SR-71 Blackbird. It was a public relations exercise for the French Government and French industrial innovation.

I don't think it is true sonic boom can't be heard on the ground from a plane 34,000 in the air unless because the plane is small maybe. To get the sonic boom the plane needs to fly over you and as it goes away from you. The Concord was banned to fly over USA land at 60,000 because the sonic boom follows the plane on it flight path as it passes over the ground.

"pilot George Welch is credited with possibly breaking the sound barrier in an XP-86 prototype during a dive on October 1, 1947, before Chuck Yeager's official record-breaking flight in the Bell X-1." AI Overview

This whole report missed the most important aspect of this particular plane and company. The fact that the sonic boom is going to be reasonably quiet as opposed to blowing windows and ear drums out on the ground which is what has prevented super sonic airliners from being successful ventures. That’s the whole point of this entire project is to have a airliner that conforms to sound levels

The big challenge is reducing the impact of the sonic boom so that the FAA will license the aircraft for supersonic flight over land.
