Thanks for including our video clip of you nearly coming to grief turning into the Ribble. It's a pity we didn't react quickly enough to have captured you being swept sideways and in the wrong direction but it all happened so scarily quickly. I couldn't believe the speed of the current, hence my embarrassing high pitched 'look at the speed of that' voice in the clip, and you did brilliantly regaining control of the boat (which was just before our video began). After seeing you nearly coming to grief we bottled it, turned earlier, and headed straight for your bows! I've done loads of tidal waters and this was the strongest by far. You certainly weren't exaggerating when you said how scary it was.

@@FoxesAfloat Well, all of your "convoy" survived the maneuver unscathed (save for some rattled nerves). On a different topic, I recall an earlier video when you passed by a moored narrowboat named "Ellie" and then shortly thereafter, one named "Jethro". You had half of the main cast of "The Beverly Hillbillies" there! All you needed was "Granny" and "Jed"! I wonder how many people noticed that. Just like an intersection in the city where I live. There was an automotive repair shop called "Holmes Motors" on one corner. Directly across the street was... "Moriarty's Pizza" (I kid you not!). Both long gone now but I could bet that I was the only person who noticed this!

My 1 top tip for surviving the Ribble Link, hire someone to take her across and get a taxi 🤣 Well done, you handled that one well. Dylan had the best idea, sleep through it then wake up wondering what all the fuss was about. i have a chaotic boat story for you :) I'm the states (Denver, Colorado to be exact) and we have a small 10ft. x 35ft. houseboat on Horsetooth Reservoir and this reminded me of the time a small tornado formed near the lake. This storm developed so rapidly that we didn't have time to seek shelter in a cove or tie up at the marina. The wind was just blasting boats around like they were kites while 3-4 feet high waves tossed us around like rubber ducks in a Jacuzzi. We didn't even try to anchor because the water was too deep and it wouldn't have been able to hold us anyway. Our only option was to point the boat in the direction of the wind and ride it out. We had that 90 horsepower outboard motor at maximum revs and it was barely enough to keep us from slamming into the rocky shoreline! If we hit those rocks they would've torn the aluminium pontoons to shreds and we would've sank in minutes with my entire family on board. I was so glad my dad opted for the 90 horsepower outboard instead of the standard 60 horsepower (that most houseboats of this size had). There was no way that little 60hp could've held its ground against the sudden onslaught of wind & waves.

Lovely vlog again (as usual) but next time you're heading into a strong current, DON'T navigate in the middle but look for the SIDES of the navigable channel; it usually doubles your speed to do so. This is true for EVERY situation of sailing against the current (rivers and tides alike). Use recent navigation charts to know where the channel is deep enough!
@FoxesAfloat
@FoxesAfloat 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hans. Yeah, a few people have said that but we are told to stay to the centre-right of the channel. There are many posts and obstacles towards the sides and also sandbanks and walls hidden in shallow water. Many boats have grounded or been damaged by them.
@timjackson3954
@timjackson3954 5 жыл бұрын
The official charts don't show depths that far upriver, and the sands often shift anyway. You really need recent local knowledge.

Around 2009 i was returning my boat from Preston to Fleetwood, we moved the boat outside of the dock and tied against the wall the night before, it was a 23 foot colvic watson fishing boat, the tide was at 0230 hrs and we decided to set off 45 minutes before high water to ensure we could make it the 14 miles to sea before the tide went from under us, as we left the dock wall it was pitch black i could not see my hand in front of my face, with five onboard we edged into the river which was a spring tide and in full flow, about 40 yards from the wall we were swept upstream, the boat hit the bottom and turned on its side as we were pushed along, we could hear the rocks on the bottom scraping down the side of the boat, my son said this it were going to turn over, i walked along the side of the boat to the bow and manually threw the anchor in front, i kept hold until it grabbed and as it did it pulled us round and righted the boat, to say it was scary was an understatement, when leaving the savick brook you should have upped the power before your nose hit the ribble, however it was a good recovery, well done and thanks for sharing.

Hi Guys, great channel so very well done to you both. I'm struggling to understand why the C&RT set you all off into the Ribble so soon before high tide, hence the incoming tidal issues you faced. Don't let it put you off from trying again, but my advice would be to wait until the flood slows down, perhaps at slack water (High Tide) to make it easier and use the outgoing tide to take you down river. Just a thought Kev
@FoxesAfloat
@FoxesAfloat 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. You can't wait because it takes anything up to 3 hours to get to Tarleton. If the water level has dropped too far you can't get in the lock due to a ledge on the lock, hence you have to set off when told by the CRT.
@neilbarnett1687
@neilbarnett1687 5 жыл бұрын
The journey has to be made against the incoming tide so that there is enough water in Savick Brook for the boats to be able to get into the Ribble estuary, and high enough at the other end to be able reach the canal lock at Tarleton. It was made worse this day because it was one of the highest tides of the year.

You two inspire me so very much to keep up. Ive had a 25 year relationship that has lasted through some hard times but never been a support through any of it. Thats finally ending and at 53 with a so called terminal illness, arthritis and deppression I'm looking at a new leg of my journey and I'm not at all sad about it even though I have tears all the time. Life can be very fun. Thanx for every time you remind me of that.

Honestly Colin, many hugs for being nervous and fretting, but look at it this way, you conquered those nerves and succeeded, so congrats on being a brave trooper and for Shaun as well for keeping it cool under the madness of circumstances that was this particular trip. Colin's shouts of power, I swear he could be the Jeremy Clarkson of the water ways for this episode, bless. At 8:35 when Colin say's "We want to go west" it so reminds me of the song Go West by the Pet Shop Boys. I really should prepare myself better for the outtakes "Covered in fairies - takes me back to mi teens" THAT was so not expected and I am sure I woke up my neighbours with my bursting out into a fit of laughter. Shaun waning a cheese sarnie, but you having no bread then suggesting cheese on toast? ha ha, and he was a chef, ha ha bless him, so fun though, thankyou so very much guys.

You're not wrong kipphelan. They made the entry onto the estuary exactly as we had all been instructed but when those of us following saw them being swept sideways we all made the turn earlier because the current was much stronger in the middle where they were.

I used to go down to Naze Point. When the docks were still operational you could watch the container ships going in and out of port and they would draw the water away, then it would all come rushing back in again. Always interesting to watch. I doubt they'd have considered the Ribble link if the port was still open!

Another great video, guys. As a fellow drone pilot, how about adding a lower altitude shot of staircase locks from start to finish to better show the elevation change of the water as you'll go through them...maybe 75 feet up or so? The high altitude looking down shots are keepers, too, though.
