It tells you some people were prepared and some weren’t. Just like construction methods can limit or prevent damage from hurricanes the same can go for fires. Also I would expect that many people took active measures during the fire.

I don't care if you are a millionaire living in a mansion, a middle class person living in a modest house, a homeless person living in a makeshift shelter you constructed yourself, a bird living in a nest, or anything in between, but your home is your HOME. It is a refuge, a place to sleep in peace, where you go to rest when the world becomes too much. And when you lose your home, you lose that sense of safety, security, refuge and peace. It is devastating, heartbreaking, scary and and sad for any humans or animals to lose their home. Praying that all affected find peace and recover.

It should be public access, for certain, but with these homes, it is the LAND where all the value is. The land, alone, is where the millions and millions of dollars of property taxes are levied (from the city's perspective). From the owner's perspective, the $30M+ of their home's value came from that land (how will they be compensated?). Insurance companies have an entirely different interest (paying out the least they can, and...in their psychopathic ruthless greed...prefering to NOT pay at all.

FYI, a lot of these beach homes are vacation and weekend homes and NOT primary homes! And county engineers stated a lot of the homes built on posts and pilings can't be rebuilt since they are not to code and grandfathered. Also, it is nice driving along PCH and actually seeing the pacific ocean, beach, and surf. Don't rebuild, the beaches are getting smaller each year and it will be nothing but problems.

I live in a western suburb of Denver, Colorado. The Marshall Fire happened three years ago (New Years Eve Day to be exact) in a suburb north of where I live. In less than 24 hours, 1,000 homes were burned. There were hurricane force winds here that day that helped spread the fire quickly. I recall the horror and sadness watching home after home; neighborhood after neighborhood burn. This goes far beyond that devastation. It is unimaginable. I am so thankful for the snippets of stories hearing of people helping people and animals.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى said, (Interpretation of the meaning) And your Lord would never destroy the towns wrongfully, while their people were right-doers. [Hud 11:117] These are their houses in utter ruin, for they did wrong (polytheism and denial of the Day of Judgement). Verily, in this is indeed an Ayah (Sign) for people who know. [An-Naml 27:52] And they were persisting in great sin, And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?" [Al-Waaqi'ah 56:46-47] So there came upon it a visitation (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. So it became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night. [Al-Qalam 68:19-20] Then when they perceived Our Torment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from it. Flee not, but return to that wherein you lived a luxurious life, and to your homes, in order that you may be questioned. [Al-Anbiyaa' 21:12-13] Such is the punishment (in this life), but the punishment of the Hereafter is indeed greater if they but knew. [Al-Qalam 68:33] And that those who believe not in the Hereafter, for them We have prepared a painful torment. [Al-Israa' 17:10]

In 2018 the Paradise, California Camp Fire killed 85 people and destroyed thousands of homes. Shortly thereafter, the ‘This Old House’ program on PBS dedicated a brief season to that community as the show helped rebuild one of the local residents’ homes. In one of the episodes of that short season, the show’s hosts carefully explained many simple steps that homeowners can take to dramatically reduce the likelihood of their homes being destroyed by a flash fire. Their advice included such things as closing in the eaves of the house so that sparks can’t get into the attic, installing fire resistant window glass and fire-retardant roof shingles, as well as not having wood structures or piles of firewood stored near the house, nor bushes grown against the house. Aerial footage of the Paradise, California community in the aftermath showed acres of homes destroyed, yet well-protected homes right in the middle of the fire’s path remained intact. When I now look at some of the aerial footage of the communities devastated by this week’s fires in California, I can’t help but notice how many neighborhood trees survived while the surrounding homes were destroyed. Apparently, even the trees can resist fire better than the matchstick homes that were built in those neighborhoods. The bottom line is that nothing was learned from the Camp Fire tragedy. I have great sympathy for those who died, were injured, or who lost loved ones. However, to paraphrase an old adage: “You can lead Californians to water, but you can’t make them think!”

Burning embers falling from the fire on the hillside could easily ignite the beachfront buildings. The newer buildings built to updated fire codes (especially roofs and building materia) could survive. @charleswhitford2026: "a simple sump pump and garden hose would have done a lot of help......" You're absolutely spot on pal. I looked at the situation & the first thing I asked was, "why and as a community, aren't ALL the people that own these beach side properties, stood outside their properties (24/7 if needs be), with hose pipes, dampening/flooding the road & pavement, outside of their homes. These people have ALL got money. If they didn't have hose pipes, rush out & get one, ladders to, to protect their properties from the embers, flying around in the air, landing of roofs (ladders t help dampen the roofs) & travelling towards their properties across the road & pavement. Taking things to the extreme, they didn't even have to hold the hose pipe. They just needed to leave them running, directly outside their homes, to flood the road/pavement to neutralize the embers. If they had worked together & done just that, they would have helped themselves massively. A very poor reflection of community spirit, common sense, & camaraderie shown and in front of the world's media, from this section of society, within L.A. To the extent, that (sometimes) I find it hard to feel sorry for those that no longer have these beach side properties because it really have to be like this, OR, end like this to them....🇬🇧

They like to keep the poor and middle class out of their 'Private' beach. On Point Dume the homeowners lock a high chain link gate so only they can access the stairs that go down to the beach. ( A nice cove ) They are very serious about it. They give homeowners a key that CANNOT be copied. (So that the homeowners can't give one to friends and then friends of friends) My sister owned a home at the entrance street to Point Dume. She took me down there once and it was bizarre. I lived in W.L.A. I asked her, "How can they do this-you can't own the beach." She just shrugged her shoulders. My sister moved after a year.

@@mattywho8485 tax dollars. Also jobs for the working class. How many different people needed to maintain those houses. How maids and nannies out of work. How many less "doordash" customers. how much lost revenue to local restaurants. These homes generate tax revenue to help with social services in the city. Income tax revenue from workers.

The red tape and environmental impact reports required to rebuild on a fragile beach are going to make it cost prohibitive to rebuild there. Best for county to purchase all destroyed parcels and make them public beaches. These homes were grandfathered in. A vacant lot would be impossible to build on today. This is the reality of coastline development

There no hate, just disgust. You're forgetting who backed Newsom in his last campaign. Millionaires and Billionaires. Now that very backing is coming home to roost, which the Rich have their own properties smoldering. Its mismanagement and incompetence at its finest. Money does not buy intelligence or competence. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for California to invest in its water infrastructure and wildfire preparedness. Without swift action, the state risks facing even more devastating disasters in the future.

Wait, if the house is too dangerous for those locations, how can the "public" enjoy those lots? That is just a foolish thing to say. Why does a house sitting on the rocks and next to the road have anything to do with the sand and water line? Answer, "it doesn't" as the beach was available to anyone who wanted to walk along it and swim in it if necessary.
