I'm an abalone diver in northern CA and a few years back, another diver named Randy Fry got his head bitten off in only 15 feet of water. His dive buddy said Randy just disappeared in a cloud of blood right beside him. Also a "once in a lifetime" encounter. I guess it all depends on how hungry the shark is in that day.
@Nath-sn1mvАй бұрын
I mean, Randy might have been trying to look inside its mouth??....
@nickmitsialisАй бұрын
@@Nath-sn1mv No the shark hit Randy as if he was a prey item--big white sharks like to decapitate pinnipeds to end the struggle quickly. That being said, the coast guard recovered all of Fry's body over 24 hours later; If it wanted to eat him it could have but it didn't. I know that white sharks in Australia will eat humans (the fatal attacks over there feature 'total consumption' of the victim with surprising frequency. ) but off Cali, even if the vic is in the water for a long time (Frye, Louis Boren, the 2021 Christmas Eve shark attack at Morro Bay) they usually are not eaten (small consolation if your dead!); Ralph Collier says its because central coast white sharks are 'spoiled' by those big fat elephant seal pups that are birthed every fall. So it might be curiosity or territorial ( big flat thingy is in it's chosen space, and the bite is basically 'get off my lawn'). Still The Channel Islands have a history of BIG white sharks (and BIG Mako sharks) because there are deep dropoffs and lots of seals and sea lions to ambush.
@Nath-sn1mvАй бұрын

@@Nath-sn1mv It's all good; shocking about your experiences. As a Scuba diver who is in awe of sharks in general, an encounter with a GW is the holy grail. I think GW's are evolving intellectually, just as perhaps Dolphins and Orca did to become the known intelligent self-aware creatures they are. Same with humans. Human intellectuality, at some point was once sub-par from where we are today but we evolved. They may sense we are at a higher stage of intelligence which may create new neuropathways in the brains of sharks when they become curious of humans. GW's have been around a lot longer than humans have but they are confined to the underwater world but as humans we are thriving in both which is maybe why we've surpassed them intellectually. My hypothesis is GW's are evolving with each human encounter/sighting/interaction.

100%. They explore the world with their teeth.
@nickmitsialisАй бұрын
@@kurtsmith2699 And there's another factor (why do dogs chase cars? It's not like they're going to catch them, right? It's just predator reaction). One time, here on Y/T a spearfisherman diving off the Channel Islands (I forgot which one) caught sight of, and started filming, a 'teenage' white shark rising up towards him with surprising speed--but as soon as the shark got close enough to notice that he was seen and had a speargun pointed at him, he immediately turned away and began to swim parallel to him and kept his distance, as if to say 'Hah, just kidding'. Another case I read about was of an Australian diver who 'exited' the cage to swim with a white shark--little by little he was led further and further away from the cage, when suddenly the shark turned about abruptly and came at him. What could the guy do? He 'squared up' and faced the shark-who promptly just swam passed him. Once they established their 'pecking order', he spent the next 15 minutes or so free swimming with the shark until he had to return to the cage. I think 'Some' white sharks might even make harassing humans a 'sport': there was a lobster diver off who got bitten off Pebble Beach-non fatal but still severe bite to the thigh. He saw it several times during his dives but each time it was spotted, it would 'fade away' beyond visual distance--finally when he broke the surface near his Zodiac inflatable to tell his father there was a shark in the water, the shark closed the distance and bit him in the thigh-then it left. Why? Maybe it wanted to 'practice it's hunting strategy'? I have no idea if sharks are even that smart or not.

This was not a "chance" encounter. Sharks can sense the "resonant thumb print" given off by a diver when he/she is swimming because it's somewhat of the size of the shark itself. This "thumb-print sine wave" is distinguished by the fish from the rest of the resonances--very short and very long--that exist in the ocean. Best practice in this situation is "no sudden movements" calm and steady. And, as another person noted in this thread: this "once in a lifetime experience" could have turned out quite differently: these predators are unpredictable.
