Let us never forget that the reason pennies are generally considered worthless is because the government has, through inflation, made it so. Prior to 1963 the metal in a U.S. coin was worth the face value of that coin. A pre-1963 U.S. dime contains $2.19 of silver. That is almost 22 times face value.

I had an entire 5 gallon glass water bottle full of pennies. When I moved it took 2 ppl to move it into my truck after I reinforced it with layers of duct tape. Unfortunately, the bottom blew out in the truck bed. People were grabbing them up by the handful and they were sloshing around for days and even got under the bed liner. Tailgates are NOT penny proof so anyone driving behind me could be subjected to a shower of them every time there was a bump in the road.

I recently had some mishap doing yard work that left a minor laceration on one finger. As it was healing, it started to experience increasing inflammation. Swollen, sore, pink, difficult to bend the finger. I taped pennies to either side of the finger at the inflammation point just after I started my day at work, and by 5 pm the swelling was gone and the finger could flex normally again. That's worth a lot more than the three cents it took to make that penny. BESIDES -- a penny is not a single-use cent. It is one cent when I spend it, it becomes change for somebody else who spends it as another cent, and so on and so on, becoming of greater accumulated value with each purchase. I still frequently find pennies from the 1960s in my change. Imagine how many dollars of use they have probably accomplished!
