He also used to quote the book of Sirach chapter 30 a lot.. "make heavy the yoke, lest their folly be your embarrassment, for when the father is gone, he leaves one like him in his place." What is a "perfect" parent anyway? No shortage of mistakes in my duties, but no shortage of successes either because my kids knew I was in charge, like I knew my dad was in charge when I was a boy. To flip that around a bit, practically every innovation in content production media for centuries has been met originally with breathless wonder over the boon each represented to education and culture. From the printing press, to radio, to television, to computers, to the Internet itself. You'd think we would've learned at some point that no matter what medium is used to facilitate human communication, humans themselves have not changed essentially, and we need to approach each advancement with skepticism, and perhaps at least attempt to install guardrails to keep our kids from ingesting the deluge of raw human crap before they're ready to assess it objectively. As one whose life has been negatively impacted by early exposure (age 12) and addiction to that thing (not sure I can specify that more clearly here) that so many young boys fall into, I can say that I totally support the motive behind DeSantis' initiative on this. I accept the blame for my actions/decisions then and since then, but I often wish someone had been more watchful and diverted me from that to more wholesome and age appropriate endeavors. The lingering effects have tainted every relationship I've had since. Wanting to protect kids from that is not prudery; it's love in action.

I know many tweens and teens will absolutely hate this……but we all have seen a rise in teen suicide, kids are anxious and cannot concentrate , plus being addicted to your device is a real thing. Most people blame schools for the lack of education their kids are getting, yet it’s the same parents who buy their kids phones on demand. Like yourselves I’m sure that they’ll do fine without a phone. Schools were always able to get a hold of parents and I’m pretty sure that hasn’t changed. So there’s no excuse to have a phone in school.

Still remember phone numbers, still meet friends at places planned weeks ahead, still have privacy, still have voicemail (answering machine). What are you talking about?

@@ianbarber311 I had BBS's and the net in the mid to late 80s. Social media wasn't a thing, but Usenet, MUDs and private/public BBS were, along with Telenet and Tymnet. I hacked a relatively famous local company's unix server and got a pw file that was easy to crack. Every month or two a sysop would drop in and kick me. I actually remember the first day their public login showed #5 *experimental WWW access* I wish I would have kept that skill up. I would be formidable in infosec. Instead I chose a happier, but less lucrative path.

@@ianbarber311 Ugh I hate getting comments deleted. Early internet was nothing like social media but I had it (mostly spoke on Usenet) and BBS and Telenet/Tymnet from the mid 80s on.

It's a nice thought by DeSantis, HOW does he suggest social media verify the age of person setting up an account?

How will social media determine the age of the person requesting access? Several apps or websites I have gone to just ask my age, No verification is done. So a 12 year old goes to TikTok ang the app asks, "Are you over 15 years of age?" and the 12 year old says "YES".....Where Is The Protection????

There’s this thing called an ID son. You may be one of those hapless people who don’t have the brains to get an ID. But, they want you to vote.

Kids/adults have to be 21 before they can drink a beer BUT at 18 they can be forced to go to war and are expected to defend and die for their country. This does not make sense.
@TheCrossing22719 ай бұрын
Nobody forced them to go to war, we don't have drafting in this country. They know what might happen to them when they signed up.
@davidlamb5919 ай бұрын
@@TheCrossing2271 you missed the point. If people are old enough to go to war and possibly die at 18 then they are old enough to drink alcohol at 18.

Parents need to get off the phones also. Kids watch their parents and pick up from there. Parenting is involvement/interacting with the child/children. BUT PARENTS NOWADAYS WANT EVERYONE ELSE TO DO THE RAISING SO THEY HAVE MORE “ALONE “ TIME TO DECOMPRESS ON THEIR PHONES. I BLAME LAZY PARENTS😮😢

Parents just don't give them a phone with internet on it just the plain old text and call. A lot of us survived with out a phone in our pockets when we were kids because it was mounted on the wall at home.
