I also struggled when I got out. I don’t like talking about it but my dad see something in me as he was a vet from Vietnam. I was laying face down on a couch and couldn’t do anything. I was scared and hopeless at the same time. He made some calls and came in and made me get up. We drove to an in patient counseling center with the VA. It was a long road but I started living life not long after that. I drank a lot and had 3 dui arrest during my lowest times. God helped me through this as well as my father and others. Keep doing what your doing brother. God Bless.

I can’t even imagine what was going through MSG. Gordon and SFC. Shughart’s heads when they were on the ground facing possibly hundreds of Somali militants pinning them down, they sacrificed their lives for the safety of that pilot and that is honor and integrity at its finest. God bless them

@@ibabdi3806 it was a civil war, coupled with a humanitarian crisis that the UN could not stabilze. The US sent in the Delta Force and Ranger soldiers to take down General Mohammed Adid ((I am sorry if I misspelt the name)) since he was the largest of the warlords operating in that specific area. The idea was to remove him and his upper leadership in order to stabilze the area for the UN to render aid to both the civilians and to stabilze, restore, and aid the government.

A lot of our soldiers died for it. We must not take it for granted and we should all defend iit. Otherwise, the soldiers who served our country and died doing it will have been in vain. I'm glad you were able to get help brother and now helping our brothers and sisters. I should've starting getting help while I was still in the Army. I had so much anger and grief during most of my career. When I got out, I still didn't get help. My wife and sons saw the problems I was having. I didn't get help because I didn't trust others to help me. I still had it in my head that I could deal. 4 years ago I hit my breaking point and was ready to just end it. I felt that I wasn't doing any good for anyone and everyone would be better off with me gone. Then a friend took me to a Vet Center and I met a real counselor who wanted to help me. She helped me face my demons and how to deal with them. Most important, she showed me that I am a good person and I deserve to be happy. I want every service member that needs help to get the help. To know we are all here for them and we always will be. Be well brother.

Bless you dudes. Did my time as 11b1p ... not embarrassed in the slightest to say never saw combat, was always ready. 31 years out and , well, it's still weird fitting in. I think the brotherhood of it all is just so unique, especially if you were young, that civilian life just seems ... less. I imagine a bad situation amplifies that 1000 times. I don't think civilians understand the impact even just the epidemic level of 'dear John' situations we have to witness our buddies go through constantly, while we are just trying to do good and serve the cause of liberty, have on soldiers of any stripe. I knew few men, myself included, that someone actually stood by. I saw some of the best men I ever knew sob. Men I respected for their fortitude and would have given all for. I realize this is a different thing than this story discusses. But it IS a thing. I just mention it now for all the spouses of soldiers away that might read this. We can handle a breakup. Just do it when we are home. If you care about us at all. I run into soldiers at work from time to time as I work in healthcare. Never do I get along as well with anyone as I do with them. Thank you for your service and sacrifice dudes. You make a difference.

There is a guy here in Dallas that says he was a Delta operator during this incident and he was captured and they cut off his finger while being captured and yes, his finger was missing half of it so he did lose part of his finger either the way he said or some other way. I can't remember his name though other then he was originally from New York and is now in Dallas and says he was on the delta team that fought in this specific conflict.

It’s possible he could’ve been Delta but rarely do former Delta operators come out & say they were Delta. Most always refer to it as The Unit or CAG. I don’t recall anyone on that op getting their finger cut off while in captivity. Blackhawk pilot Mike Durant was captured but no extremities were removed. A lot of guys claim to be Navy Seals or Delta & most of the time they’re not & were never close to being it. Just from your comment describing the guy telling you & the details about being in Delta & BHD, which we always referred to as Operation Gothic Serpent, I just don’t think that guy was a former CAG operator. I could be wrong but I’d bet most of my chips that he’s not.

@@dogsoldier7779 Thank you for the response and I always questioned his story. I always heard the same thing you said about how if someone was part of a tier 1 unit they don't talk about it.

My late father was and still is my hero who inspired me to went Green Beret but those tip of the spear in Gothic Serpent were the one to push my gut to try out the ACE. Took a blast from my last op and I took the early retirement offer for my toddler and wife. I'm glad he is doing ok with the support of his family. God bless him. I'm currently undergoing physical therapy and family support are the one that keeping me sane. Hopefully I could walk normally next month.

I am a psychologist and in my opinion, PTSD is way over claimed. It is a real disorder, but many people claim this title because its trendy and it prevents them from having to take personal responsibility. If your an addict or alcoholic, many rehabs wiil assign you a PTSD diagnoses automatically so your not responsible for your behaviors. Sick of it.

Totally agree with you. I spent 23 yrs in the army and see many guys from Vietnam who waited years not planning their lives and now claim ptsd in order to fund their poorly planned retirement.

It's funny....before seeing this my view was framed by the scene where Gordon and Shugart went in to be with pilot so he wouldn't die alone....But now after listening to CAG sergeant major, WAR is HELL....and it continues on afterwards....I salute all you who served our country.

We must remember that the last few wars were lost because of bad mediocre strategists, bad leadership, enemies within, bad decisions etc.

Yes civilian young kids who were drugged up and started repeating what the enemy whispered in their ears like for example: make love, not war, why are we there? That's not our business etc. And started refusing to go and fight. And the patriots forgot to refute the lies and explain loudly and clearly why it was our business! Why we had to stop communist spread before it took over the world and reached our shores!!! Now it's here because the people were too naive and cowardly.

If this country had won those wars, like Vietnam we might not have communism infiltrated throughout your government agencies from the WH and congress to city and local gov.
