You said it! There is a very easy learning curve to use the Magic Lantern hack but the quality that this camera produces just blows my mind for the price. A Canon T2i and Magic Lantern changed my life about 12 years ago. That's when I figured out that I personally could actually shoot good quality video. I was a still photographer and had been trying to teach myself how to shoot video and the camcorder I was using wasn't cutting it....but I thought it was ME who wasn't cutting it. That's when a buddy of mine turned me on to the Canon T2i and Magic Lantern. I still remember how joyous it was to realize in just one weekend that I could shoot SO MUCH BETTER video than I thought I could. One of the biggest things for me was that Magic Lantern gave me so much more control of the audio on the T2i. Suddenly you had audio levels right on the screen! Not to mention zebras and tons of exposure control. I've graduated to more advanced cameras now but I still have that T2i to this day...and even bought a second one for a two camera setup back then. I had no idea Magic Lantern was even still a thing! Glad to hear it's still hanging in there!
@b3arodactyl2 жыл бұрын
Stupid question but does the t2i get features like higher bit depth video or anything like that? Have one laying around but had no idea you could hack the firmware haha
@TerryWindell2 жыл бұрын
@@b3arodactyl No higher bit depth unfortunately. You can't change the hardware. But the ML hack does give you almost total control over the camera. Features that we take for granted on today's DSLRs were hidden and/or crippled on the T2i. It won't turn your camera into a Sony A7S mIII, but it's totally worth it. Plus lenses for this camera are cheap and with an adapter you can mount just about any lens. Hope that helps.

Oh my god, I haven't heard of magic lantern in so long! I used it on my 600d (t3i) like 6-7 years ago, it was cool but that camera definitely didn't have the capability to handles it at it's best. Also the 5D had some lagginess when you were using ml on it. Honestly I think that the 2k prores of the Alexa it's still a better image (technical specifications and mere resolution apart) since the ale sensor is a really well tuned piece of hardware but I understand the need of a smaller and lighter camera. The Alexa definitely works at peak performance in a well structurated set. Great contents, the series about the Alexa restoration has been really fun to watch. Keep it up!

back in the day i installed magic lantern in my (then) new 60D, only 1 year after launch. the peaking, zebras and extra customizability were awesome! but the raw video could only ever record 11 seconds, 14 seconds max when i held an ice pack to it. im pretty sure this eos M cant last that long with raw video either. probably longer than 11 seconds but probably still not long enough to actually be usable for actual scenes.. idk i hope it does though!

This is easy to get going and setup and the picture is great but be aware the higher resolutions and raw video do not run that long and it crashes like crazy but when you find the right settings and C Mount lens things get interesting Also in most of the interesting settings, the View screen is unusable. To say the rolling shutter is horrible is an understatement. Moving the camera is not recommended. This is great for fun but never let it get anywhere near your Paid shoots. I think it is good for someone that wants to create some footage to practice color grading and editing in apps like Davinci resolve

Adam, first off, big fan, buy a lot of old sony bodies and things because of you. And I ended up ordering an EOS M too, again, largely driven by you forging a path toward it along side your other videos for me. But I haz a question. When I deep dove on ML and all the things, I see that there are all kinds of variations in the feature set across the various canon body options that ML has been ported to, and I am curious why we are all buying the EOS M, when some of the other tXi/x00 models seem to support more of the ML functions on the comparison chart at the ML page. Why are we all buying the EOS M, when some of the bigger bodies have say, more accessory ports, or viewfinders or other nice to have options and seem to be even more capable with ML on them? What am I missing here? I bought the EOS M because there seems to be so much video and FB group support for it specifically, but the whole time I was thinking, am I making a mistake? Shouldn't I be picking up like a rebel body, a t3i/t5i/600d/700d whatever, that checks more boxes on the ML comparison chart? I would love your insight/answer to calm my potential EOS M buyer remorse. LOL.

The catch is the poor dynamic range, inability to see a proper image on screen when shooting, and non-4k. I've owned several of the original EOS-M's over the years, only ever to use with Magic Lantern, and I always end up selling it off in disappointment a week later. The fake anamorphic mode was cool when it first came out year back, but you can stretch the image all you want, it's obvious it's not truly high resolution.
