Beautiful ship, I'm so happy they are making a museum/hotel out of it. My father took me on this ship when I was 12 and I was so impressed I joined the U.S. Navy. Years later my cruiser, USS Lake Champlain, passed the SS Rotterdam off of Long Beach, CA and I was on watch on the bridge. It was like seeing a long lost friend. I hope I stay on her again someday when I visit the Netherlands for the first time!

I work on board the ss Rotterdam. We have to be thankful that some people stood up and saved this magnificent ship. It took some time but she's still here instead of being broken on a scrapyard. I hope the ss United States gets renovated to. Sailing or not.

I worked on the Norway and the Rotterdam. I watched a couple of Norway vids yesterday and it made me sick. Such a shame. The Rotterdam was a beautiful ship too, of course. I did 4 contracts on the Rotterdam and only one on the Norway, but there was something so special about that ship for me.

One of the prettiest liners ever build; I'm glad this one is saved.

Unlike the Norway, ss Rotterdam V was basically original inside and out. Her interiors and gorgeous woodwork are intact though I doubt her new owners would have saved her had they realized all the work required. She looks wonderful in her original 1959 Holland-America colours.

me too. It's horrible to see the new pics of the Norway nearly gone. She deserved the same retirement as the Rotterdam. She's such a great loss

Nice fact, just discovered in the first movie of Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Hercules in New York" (1969), in the scenes where Arnold is pushing against multiple people with a plank, the SS Rotterdam can be seen in 3 very good viewable scenes leaving New York.

Far out. Weird seeing it w/o the blue hull. I worked 3 contracts on there. Pretty intense memories...

She should do some fun cruises on the English Channel now she's been restored. Or a once-yearly transatlantic trip.

What's a ship that doesn't sail? These old liners would be better kept in some sort of limited service, perhaps between lucrative destinations as luxury, small capacity/high price vintage liners. That, of course would take some imagination, especially in an age when things that aren't brand new are seen as old and dirty. Still, a ship that doesn't sail is a sad sight.

I'm so glad the ships being saved - least I can say for the SS NORWAY :( What's this about her not sailing anymore, though? She's gonna be a hotel like the QUEEN MARY, then? ...or, what?

@SSUnitedStateslife wait, sorry, i might be thinking of the USS American star... i think thats her name.... the ship i was thinking of ran aground and broke in to, while being towed after being won at an auction.
@richardcline13376 жыл бұрын
That was the former SS America, then renamed American Star. She broke her tow line, drifted ashore and broke in half. NOTHING left of her now after the sea finished bashing her to bits.
