Dear eye ball, perhaps you might give a little history, built when, why first needed, origin of the Shay loco.... etc. Here in Maine, we have 24” track from the 1850’s-> 1930’s
@fpk12343 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestion. I will add information about this locomotive in the description field of the video later.

@@fpk1234 just after leaving my curiosity request, I did a Google look up, And was impressed at how much information had been submitted there. The Lima Locomotive Works - 28 ton class B Shay built for your gauge of which a total of 20 units were delivered in the 1920’s - 1930’s +/-

Didn't see a LIMA builders tag on the side of the smoke box. Why no passengers?
@fpk12343 жыл бұрын
The LIMA tag has been lost for a long time. Because this train is a trial run, there are no passengers on the train.

15:26 Eyes Ball a solution must be found so that people do not put sand on the rail on this section in curve, where the sand device cannot be used effectively(On the curve, the sand pipe can't spray all the sand on the rail)
Cool Video! 15:30 Sand box ran out of sand? or just need lot more sand? I wish I was there when they move SL-21 form the park back into the shop and then they put on a show with all the other locomotives. You can see the video on BK20185's channel.

Because this section is a curve, the sand device cannot be used effectively(On the curve, the sand pipe can't spray all the sand on the rail) I have seen other videos about SL21 carried. That process is quite not easy. I also recorded the SL-17 carried operation. I’ll share it on KZbin.

Why do they do the double blast of steam every few seconds. I know how steamers work generally but never got the "breathing" effect

A pump mounted on the side of the boiler is charging the air brakes.
It appears that there are no passengers in this train. Why?
@fpk12343 жыл бұрын
This train is the test running, so no passengers on it.

Where are the wheels and pistons, con rods etc?
@fpk12343 жыл бұрын
They are only designed on the one side. At first in this video, you can see them.

The Shay type locomotive has a geared drive. The pistons are mounted vertically on one side of the boiler. They drive a crankshaft connected to a jointed shaft which runs the length of the loco. This in turn drives bevel gears which are mounted on each axle. The wheels are in mounted in pivoted trucks (bogies) like a diesel loco. This gives a low geared and flexible engine suitable for sharp curves and delivery of power at slow speed. Shay's are a unique American design that have been around since the late 1800s.
