I am finally getting around to the comments... had people come to visit as soon as the video went live, so I had most of the content scheduled beforehand. Thank you so much for this documentary. I'll be watching it again and again over the years. I wish the YT algorithm picked it up. It seems only videos that can get 10k hits just from search results get picked up these days (like my Starfield video that went crazy). I feel like there are thousands of subscribers who would love this documentary, but will never get the notification. Hopefully they find it elsewhere. I'm grabbing the books now! I'm having a hard time finding a hard-back cover of Sharware Heroes. Any recommendations for where to get it? Also, is there a store that's best for you? I try to avoid Amazon... I've sold there myself and they are far too greedy.

OMG Yes! I will definitely watch this... One day... When I scavenge it from a friend - or privateer it. I don't have disposable income 24/7. I get my next pay check 2 days after this ends. If this is not available(reasonably priced) post sale - I will not hesitate to consume first and pay later. - okay - in all seriousness - support the creators. I'm just frustrated that I've already used this weeks budget. Also : Prey(2006) is the best(opinion) shooter of its kind.

Very interested in the Looking Glass segment, huge Thief fan here. Also excited for anything Rare, Halo, Half-Life. $18 for 4hrs of backstory of my early gaming experiences is a steal. The soundtrack sounds great already!

Half of these games I only played the demos that were attached to the back or inside PC Mag or other mostly game entities. I was too busy working at the time so playing a bit of the very large demos (Many of which held ¼ of the title!) I think Planescape: Torment was one of the few games that I bought for myself and that wasn't until 2010'ish. I don't feel like I cheated myself, though. Had a blast playing those demos.

I was only disappointed they didn’t talk to Ken Silverman more, but he seemed incredibly nervous. I was a game programmer through the mid 90s up until about a decade ago & I devoured any and all info I could, eventually meeting Carmack at a GDC. So, I didn’t encounter much I didn’t know except for some of the pre-id era. But, yeah, especially if you didn’t ravenously eat, sleep, & breathe game development as I did, then there’s a LOT to learn. It’s great either way. 🔫😈🤘

So did Morrowind. Oblivion was the title that made me face the facts that I had no idea what was going on inside the case. Before that, I couldn't finish the end of Oblivion because there's no way to protect the other protagonist when I was getting 3-5fps even at the lowest settings, on the same rig that ran Morrowind really well.

As much as I love Morrowind, that is definitely not a game that runs well on everything. Even without mods there are plenty of areas that aren't much over 100fps on a 11900k, 32gb cl14 dual rank 3733, and a 6900XT

@@solocamo3654 Well, I had no idea how to determine the frame rates back then, but my 486 rig was plenty powerful enough for Morrowind and the two DLCs, which I did for many months.

@@trog69 It really wasn't but if the frame rates were acceptable to you, who am I to judge. I played it on a Pentium 4 2.53ghz with good old rambus memory and a GeForce 4 ti4100 128mb and the game was a struggle.

@@solocamo3654 Perhaps I had the resolution down to playable rates? I will admit that on this new rig(i7-12700k/3080/32gb 3733 xmp/2tb NVMe) I got less than 100fps on MW with the latest mod collection installed.

Really good documentary and well worth watching! However, I was a bit surprised that there was no mention of Farcry, Crysis or the CryEngine at all. So however good this is, it can't run Crysis lol!

@@teksyndicate the thing I find most fascinating about Tribes and Quake is that the two key features that made the games what they are, strafjumping and skiing, were originally exploits, not even intended by the devs. But those devs were smart enough to know a good thing when they saw it. The fast movement of those games is still unparalleled.

This is for a documentary featuring tons of industry interviews, not a random KZbin video. It's higher quality than something you might watch on netflix. I think it's quite inexpensive for what you're getting.

@@teksyndicate I hear you and no doubt that a lot of work went into this... but in comparison anyone can go to a theater and watch a AAA hollywood movie for less. I think $5 would have been a better price than $20. Just my opinion. According to your logic there is no money in posting free videos yet many KZbinrs are doing pretty well earning ad revenue and sponsorships through their channel with free videos. Would this not be a perfect candidate for multiple ads to play during the 4 hours.and monetize it that way? I wish no disrespect.
