Fr. John Behr - Death - The Final Frontier

At the 2013 Diocesan Assembly of the OCA Diocese of the South, Fr. John Behr gave 3 lectures. Fr. John is the Dean of St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. He gave 2 talks on death, and 1 on understanding the Episcopacy. Our thanks to Fr. John Parker, Chair of the Dept. of Missions and Evangelization for the Orthodox Church in America for providing these recordings. The Assembly was held in Jacksonville/Jacksonville Beach July 29-Aug 1

In the midst of the worldwide violence, especially currently in the Middle East against Christians and churches, humanity needs to hear the meaning of death in Orthodox theology. Thanks to the Very Revd Fr. John Behr for articulating the case.

Excues me, I must make a comment. God is the God of the living. God is alive. When Peter was asked who do you say I am. Peter said you are the son of the living God; Not understanding that Jesus in a form of the man was dead in the flesh like those with Him. He was alive in the spirit with His Father. Spirit and flesh. The flesh had to die for the spirit to come comfort those that was dead but now alive. Very beautiful and wonderful. I enjoy your teaching very much. Thank you for your service to share the good news to those who are willing to hear. 🕊

🖖❔🦢 Yes intellectually interesting some great points but metaphysically confused and mystically unsound ,we cannot die to ourselves anymore than we can try to love a ludicrous statement, learn how to die to ourselves ridiculous God and God's grace Alone produces this in us so we can be channel's of His Love and his intelligence . Obvious but true why because we fear it and misunderstand it on a deeper level .Let's try and cover it up or over. BUT He says to the sadduces God is a God of the living NOT the dead ,nihilism made acceptable ,doesn't want to keep fit so I presume he thinks am I responsible ..Etc another clever theologian ? It sounds a bit fundamentalist as if there is no transcendent reality prior to or without Christianity whereas he epitomised an archetypal God man ,all spirituality is about life of the Spirit ,that is awareness being non being ,an objective reality beyond the subjective ,it is as Teilhard de Chardin says our evolutionary trajectory to become like Christ ,religion takes metaphysics and posits it in a certain framework ,but yes the supremacy of Christ or Jesus Christ is not in doubt . He lived this dying to self by grace to perfection so yes you have made some very interesting points ,St Paul if we had been in our right mind we would not have condemned Christ to deathe ,so yes we do not live by love but by this illusory superficial ego ,you cannot die by this ,it is his which prevents us from loving .
