Because it shines a light on the fact that he's willing to do what they're too afraid to do! It pricks their conscience, because deep down inside, they know he's right.

As a parish coordinator, the problem is the diocese will take the money one way or another. I actually give our money directly to the diocesan tax to reduce the amount of income that can be taxed by the diocese.

I cannot in good conscience send another dime to my diocese, but I do know the will get the money from the parish one way or another, and that every dollar I give to my wonderful parish means more will be required of us at the diocesan "appeal" time. :(

@@KristynLorraine our taxation program in Pittsburgh is called parish share. The amount is a percent of the previous years income. By giving directly to parish share as opposed to giving as 'offertory' (however painful it is), I reduce the amount the diocese taxes the following year. Sometimes I will give it straight to a particular charity initiative that also cannot be taxed, but my default is parish share. Either way the diocese will get their money. This is sort of tax sheltering.
