This is one of my favorite sessions with Richard. I have read the interesting and thoughtful dialogue found within the comments. My take on his Daily Meditations, writings, homilies, and other various teachings is, perhaps, more naive. I see him trying to open the world's various diverse religions eyes to the inherent divinity, humaness,beauty, of each creation on earth-human or not. From mountain to air to pebbles, to water, to butterflies to humans-seeing God everywhere and the preciousness of the multifaceted created by God, the Creator, The Supreme Being, Allah. I don't think God becomes hung up on names, sex, gender, or race.Like any good spiritual teacher, Richard Rohr tries to provide a broad base and,I believe, allows the pupil to put their unique stamp upon it.

I’m watching this video for the first time. I may be very wrong but, I’ve been following Richard for several weeks now & my realisation & attitude have changed. I do not judge people at first encounter. I respect every person that I meet but I then let them lose my respect as time goes on. Sometimes years pass. I always look at a person & listen, watch. I’ve worked on my own self for almost 20 years. I’ve had to change everything. I lost every friend. My Wife’s friends. My own self respect. I hated myself. I got my Faith back. I love people. I love who I am. I’m now a Special Minister at our Catholic Church here in Western Australia. I have my self esteem back. I love people. I had to change myself. I fall over. I get back up & work on myself. When my Wife of 51 years & I go to bed at night we ALWAYS say goodnight Darling. And I Love you before we go to sleep. It’s a constant presence in me. Father Richard is helping me every day without even knowing it. I’m not smart. I’m not special. I’m just a normal bloke who found himself & changed because he wanted to. Thank you Father Richard & others. I’ve always had God by my side. He has saved my life many times during times of war (Vietnam) & times of despair. Neville J.

OK. A Kentucky recluse told Fr. Rohr, "Richard, God is not up there. He's in here." Presumably, he was pointing to himself. But most of us haven't had this lived experience of the Indwelling, so we keep thinking of God as other. I don't know what to think of all that. What I know is that years ago, I heard a woman speaking behind me and saying, "David, you're so funny." I turned around to look, and no one was there. I was completely alone. A month or two later, I heard a man, with powerful authority, ask me, "Ready to give it up?" Again, I saw no one there and I was alone. That one scared me, because I knew I didn't really want to give up my will; yet that was the voice of Someone you did not want to be angry with you.
@cherylmburton55772 жыл бұрын
He said "God is not up/out there." This is certainly not something new for him to have said. Possibly the recluse was telling Richard in his own way that he had a profound Mystical experience with him right where he was.

I can understand the point of view of the Rabbi regarding the nam of God in the OT, but there are many other interpretations and most Bibles have removed the name of God in all but 3or 4 of the over 750 places that His personal name appears in the OT, and Yahweh does appear about 250 times in the NT and was spoken by Jesus and His Apostles. God left an example of what constituted abuse of His name in the wilderness. A teenage boy was put to death directly at His command. God can read/hearts. What is in the heart and would not have had him put to death unless He determined that the abuse of His name was intentional and competently acted out. The boy's father was not Jewish but had been expected to teach the boy the same respect for God as he himself had. The boy was not put to death for simply uttering His personal name. It was as Jesus said that it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man but what proceeds out of it, because out of the heart the abundance of the mouth speaks, and wicked reasonings come out of the heart. That is also why Jesus said Isaiah had been correct in writing that the people were honoring God with their lips but their heart was far removed from Him. At various times the OT prophets also wrote when God was angry with them that it was they who were causing the people of the nations who did not know God, to blaspheme Him, because the Israelites were painting a picture of Him, that made Him an object of something to disrespect. When God wiped out the entire family of Jeroboam. God designated just one son from that family would be worthy of a decent burial, and God said this was because He had found "something" in his heart that was "good" towards Him. The way that some Jewish people go on today is to discourage people from even thinking about Him, and that is a disgusting distraction, even leaving some people vulnerable to demon influence. So they should not complain when it is the will of God to turn it all back on them.

IMHO... we are all children Living in a divinely Loving creation... and each of us has... with our own participation... developed a "persona"... or "egoic identity".... with a name, education, role and history... and that "identity" appears to have a "life" of it's own.... to be a competitor in a worldly "monopoly" game, deeply motivated to compete and "win" in the game... including marching off to war, and following "patriotic" orders... however, that "identity" is not God's creation at all... and is actually "asleep" with virtually no awareness of the Love of God....therefore that egoic "identity" will understandably confuse "free will" with options within the virtual monopoly, virtual reality, double bind.... until awakening.... born again.... There are many unscrupulous Mindfulness teachers in Bhuddism, and now also within Christianity. I saw a sign here in Cambridge advertising "Modern Mindfulness" classes. It probably does not even resemble the original teachings from their ancients, probably not retaining any originality, the same as "Yoga" today does not resemble the ancient or even the way that Ghandi practiced it.

I think he is a little hard on dualists. Vedanta says that dualism, love of an image of G-d, is a very healthy stepping stone to a realization of the non-dual totality that is G-d. And it adds that many who have realized G-d is everything- the infinite consciousness underlying all of creation, often come back to a dualistic love of G-d, because it is so sweet. Of course, Rohr is absolutely correct to point out the danger of strict dualism: you hate everyone who doesn’t believe in your image of G-d. Only Jainism and Buddhism, which have no image of G-d, have avoided this trap.

What about Experience? As we 'do' things enough times, we learn. There is memory, and there is the mind recognising recurring patterns. Judgement occurs as a result of experience we accumulated. Would you put your hand in a 300 C oven? Exactly. Of course assumption is another thing. Sounds to me that this is what your are talking about, really. For example, I have the assumption, either right or wrong, that religious people are not interesting. You would be surprised how many times it ends up being true!
@almagore18 жыл бұрын
+Alp Özcan The thing you are assuming is that you are the Mind or the body or the body mind combination; and you are not. You say "we do things."; no, your body mind do things, you do no not. Who are you? Your body has sensory nerves that send signals to the brain. Electromagnetic radiation comes into your eye through the pupil and strikes the retina which is the end plate of your optic nerve which is part of the brain. The retina is only sensitive to a very small bandwidth of EMR called the visible light spectrum and sends signals. The Brain/mind analyses the raw data from your optic nerve and mixes it with the world view you have been acculturated to believe and then has the marvelous ability to project this picture so that you think you are the body and are looking out through your eyes but really it is all in your mind. It is not anywhere else. If you watched the video on Thomas Merton you watched and heard him talk about an epiphany he had. Everything seemed normal and then instantly all of the physical forms became transparent and God was shining through them. And he said, "And it was true.!" I had the exact same experience walking down a country dirt road in the 1960's. The 100% exact same experience and it was true. Our every day experience was like a painting on a lamp shade id was so unreal by comparison to this new, more real experience. If you look on U Tube foer a song, "When all things become shadows in the Light of you. The person who wrote this song had the exact same experience but describes it a little differently.Most people think that the mind is "our mind". It is not. The mind is the consciousness of the brain. Our true self also has a Consciousness but the thinking of the brain's consciousness is so loud that we can't be aware of ourselves. That is why all true religious disciplines aim at controlling and quieting the mind. Sri Ramana Maharshi is the true Master of the Real Self and His teachings can leads one to this experience of the Real self. So can Jesus teachings. They both teach the same things but from a different language perspective. Some Christians are criticized for taking the Bible too literally. That is not the problem. The problem is that most people don't take Jesus and His Apostles literally. When St. Paul says that, "Christ is our life", he is speaking literally.

Non-dualism is non-Christian: Man is not God; not a creator, but a creature. We will never become God. God was born a man in the Son, Christ Jesus; in Him the glory of God was seen in human flesh. By the power of His eternal spirit Jesus Christ atoned for our sins on the cross of Golgatha and rose from the dead! Receive Jesus Christ in faith as Savior and Lord and follow Him - whoever you are.
@ilmarmeldre25688 жыл бұрын
"God became man so that man would become God" - St.Athanasius. We are divine nature.. Being children of God is being gods by nature. Dualism is non-christian greek philosophical platonical gnostic heretical idea... Jesus Christ is 100% man and 100% God and He reunited both into one, there's no separation at all.. We believe in Trinity and in the Incarnation, it's very practical thing that exists among us..
@Dimmify8 жыл бұрын
We will never become God because there is no need to. God already became man through the person of Jesus Christ to bring perfect unity in our relationship. Just as Jesus promised, "On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you." We as believers form "Christ" in a sense coming into unity with each other, Jesus and the Father. In this way there is no dualism.

in fact, it's what the so-called Athanasian Creed is talking about when it talks about Christ's "taking of manhood into God." That's not just a nicety that happened to Jesus, leaving the rest of us behind. If it were, then who cares? What difference does it make?
@Johanna0407137 жыл бұрын
God was born a man to redeem us from our sins and the wages of sin which is the eternal separation from God. Jesus, even when He was here on earth, wasn't a creature, but a Creator! Please don't ever mistake Him for a creature again. What you guys are talking about is Mormonism and New Age -beliefs - not Christianity.

Mr Rohr would seem to be suggesting that people who do not use his methods of looking at things as being biased and judgemental. He would also seem to suggesting that the right way to look at people is the Richard Rohr way and that we have been programmed into not thinking this way. This would imply that he is one of the few people who have managed to escape this programing and now can lead us out of our error into the world of truth and oneness with God. This also implies he can see the truth better than most men who have lived over the last two thousand years. Doubtful.
@DannyEastVillage7 жыл бұрын
I've listened to this piece several times and haven't gotten from it what you have. He clearly tells the story of his having been the victim of the same confining ways of thinking--and that it's a perennial temptation to fall back into it. Moreover, I get that he's asking us to broaden our perspective rather than constrict it. And he skillfully uses the biblical tradition to back up his perspective.
