Fr Seraphim Rose On "Fun"

As I was watching this, I forgot, that Fr Seraphim Rose lived so long ago, and he talked to our parents and grandparents. All I could think of was - he is talking about this, current generation! And then I see your comment from 5 minutes ago to correct me and make me leave out of my imagination :D We are living children of "me" generation. Yet somehow, the Orthodox Church still lives amongst this evil. It's even growing! But one of the russian saints prophesied, that it's last flowering before the end.

@wojtex2011 It has become exponentially difficult with each passing generation, especially in America, to not fully assimilate to the most vulgar and disgusting aspects of our culture. I struggle with it daily. But Fr. Seraphim Rose recognized, even in a slightly more innocent time, that there are ways to detach ourselves and become closer to God. Hopefully Patriarch Kirill sees as to why he should be gifted sainthood soon.

I have had a problem with the word 'fun' for a while now. Mostly because, as Fr. Rose says, it means absolutely nothing. It's completely subjective. What one person thinks is fun another think is a bore and vice versa. Thank you for sharing this.

I have fun with God . Nothing wrong with fun, just make sure it's the right kind and spirit. You can have joy and laughter and fun with the Holy Spirit. Doesn't he make you rejoice, leap for joy and smile and feel glad? Have fun!

I like that quote from “The Cat In The Hat” movie, “It’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how.” So as long as your idea of having fun is not going to separate you from Christ (doing drugs, drinking excessively, going to secular/satanic concerts & such like) you should be alright.

Beautiful message, thank you for posting. Unfortunately, the background sound is loud - it makes it hard to hear Father Seraphim clearly. Why do people make videos with loud background music/sound is beyond my understanding. I think the background sound should be very subtle, almost unnoticeable, and in this way enhance the video and not be a distraction.

At his tonsure, in October 1970, Rose took the name "Seraphim" after Seraphim of Sarov. He wrote, translated and studied for the priesthood in his cell, a one-roomed cabin with neither running water nor electricity, where he would spend the rest of his days.

This is not to make light of those how legitimately suffer for Jesus sake. But I take issue with fabricating suffering. Standing up during church service and lying face-down on the floor when praying is just for show. What about the infirm? They cannot stand at all or lay face down of their own volition. We all have our struggles and the Lord notice all of it. But are we suffering because the world is at odds with us over our love for the Lord or because we want to show off to others? I am being sincere about this and not just making light.

@derekdavis3004 I understand your position brother. These men of God usually drew themselves away from society in order to worship God so I don't believe they are doing it for show. I feel that is the complete opposite of what monsatic life is about. But thank you for your comment
