Awesome video! Would love to see up close the moment of cracking the rod. Must be super precise pressure.

The cracker works for the following steps.1. Robot Load and unload the on cracker. 2. In station 2 the table rotates and split the part or fracture the part with the help of an hydraulic wedge. 3. The bolt feed in into the holes with a torque of 25N/m( depend upon the type of a machine) 4. Then the table again rotates and applied a Re-torque with a force of 40 N/m and then finally the table rotates and go back to the 1st step to unload the part.

You are correct about the robot load and the fracturing being done in station two. Next, the fracture plane is cleaned with air, and then the bolts are inserted and torqued to the customer's specifications. The bolts are first torqued to 35nm then backed off and torqued to 40nm + 90° rotation. The resulting torqued is above 90nm. The part is then transferred to a bushing insertion station, then transfered to the unload station/robot.

I wonder how they get them to fracture evenly?
@machinedoctorsinc32974 ай бұрын
@AngelaWest-if5ko there are a few things that go into keeping the fracture straight. The short version is a special fixture, custom designed wedge & jaws in addition to a vee being broached into the rod to create a weak point.

the rod is powder till it is heated. It is a cheap rod for a cheap engine.
@machinedoctorsinc32973 ай бұрын
@raginroadrunner Most rods are powdered metal these days. This rod is from the 2017 Duramax Diesel. Forged steel rods are rare these days.
@theamerican70803 жыл бұрын
It's very difficult to see what's going on because the rod must be securely clamped to the tool from all sides to not only isolate the fracture point, but the rod is tweaked ever so slightly- just a few thousands- to make a clean break without bending the rod bosses.

And who developed the cracking of connecting rods? Alfing Kessler Sondermaschinen Germany, World market leader in the production of connecting rods.
@machinedoctorsinc3297 Жыл бұрын
Actually, that is not true. The process was developed by Ford. And the first patent is held by G&L. You are right about one thing though, Alfing is the largest manufacturer of connecting rod machinery that is left.

What is happening?

After the rod is clamped the fracture jaws are inserted into the crank bore and then a high speed wedge separates the jaws causing the fracture.

Regardless of the humongous machine cracked rods really are of no benefit unless your only interested in production cost.
@machinedoctorsinc3297 Жыл бұрын
Fracturing rods has nothing to do with cost. It is the best and only real way to ensure the cap and beam fit perfectly and precisely back together.
