Huber is video game dad. He always wants to start a relationship with a game with love. And when he does have a critique for a game or a company he doesn't get mad but rather he sounds genuinely disappointed in them, like he knows they can do better hah

What's weird though is how short their memory is with EA. They made 2 decent Star Wars game out of 4 (3 if you count how BF2 got better over time), they made a remaster for one of his most beloved western RPG's and now a remake for Dead Space and that's all it takes for them to forget about their yearly games shenanigans and MTX shady business. They're also pretty unaware of how mishandled Apex is regardless of how popular it is.

NINJA GAIDEN is 100% one of the greats. Sekiro is the closest thing I’ve played but doesn’t take you on as much of an adventure with not nearly as much variety. Black has an easy mode called “ninja dog” mode if players die 3 times on the first level. Hilariously, they make the player wear a pink bow through the rest of the game if one chooses to do so!

Skyward Sword came out in an era where people pushed "longer = better" so I think the game wrongly/artificially lengthened itself in parts. As far as dungeons go, the desert ones (and the whole region) were by far the best memorable. Pre-dungeon "dungeons" were done better in Majora's Mask, mostly thanks to that game's thematic focus on healing people. Skyward's Motion controls were fine to me, except anything involving pointing downward, as that's incompatible with leaning back on your couch. At least the enemies were tougher than TP's cakewalks. Shoutouts to Brad for bringing up Sauron into the discussion, never a bad time!
@Ayoul
@Ayoul 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure I agree with your initial point. We're a lot more in this era now than back then and I wouldn't associate Nintendo with that trend of artificially inflating their games. Always felt to me like the game just had too much ambition for the platform (skyloft is empty because the wii is not powerful) and then tried to be efficient to add more content by reusing places and encounters a lot.

As someone who played DDLC a good few months after it dropped on steam, and knew of a lot of the twists beforehand? I still enjoyed the twist itself, I enjoyed all of the elements of it post-twist. I think the biggest difference here might not be DDLC's fault... but rather DDLC Plus. If it was just to play the main story, I think you'd be better served playing the free OG game over the $15 for the Plus version, whose main additions serve more to just give you side content. Plus isn't bad, but... what they implement is a necessary change so the game can work on consoles, but the decision to have a 'PC menu' as the main screen kind of... ruins the magic of the game. It's a divider between you and the story itself, literally gamifing the last moments. And because this has to be a console game, it also removes the strong ending point that the original Steam version can leave you off with. It's disappointing to hear Huber sped through a lot of the dialogue on the second part, as there are some meaningful shifts in it as well as the background. The OG game had many multiple little effects that may or may not trigger, things that can happen for one person and not others. And once you learn about having to do what you need to do? Or even picking up on some of the hints it drops after the first twist? There was some genuinely interesting stuff to look for outside of the game itself that only works because you had to look for it. But with DDLC+, all of that is instantly accessible and immediately known. They do add more to the 'game within a game' aspect, but even that is gamified and rewarded in-game and thus already known rather than encouraging exploration for exploration's sake. There's no extracting audio to turn into an image file to wrap around as a texture, no base64 decoding to find shreds of internal lore... Just... a few puzzles.

Glad you're liking Scarlet Nexus! I'm about the same amount of time in, and I've been pleasantly surprised at how memorable the cast has been, despite how large it is. The visual style has really started to grow on me, especially how distant backgrounds, instead of merely being an out of focus foreground, end up looking like early concept art / storyboarding. I'm looking forward to completing the story, and if all goes well, having enough intrigue left to tackle the other characters' as well.

The minute from 44:07 is actually an extremely important take regarding spoilers and how they affect impressions. Including the dreaded "I can't wait till you react to this moment at the end of Season/Level/Chapter 3 that I'm not gonna tell you about" Some of my favorite visual novel moments on the NDS were largely because I had nearly zero knowledge about what's coming. I'm glad Huber & the Allies have a more educated take on spoiler psychology than most gamers these days in the age of instant-information.

Glad I'm not the only one (of course I am not but you know...) I'm a very sensitive guy that considers spoilers that what you said, but also any hint or just minimal stuff related to the game, series, movie or whatever. In an era where we are SO exposed to information everyday/at the moment, it feels good to go into something knowing nothing and enjoying it fully. For Sekiro I remember only watching the reveal because I was already watching the conference but then it was total media blackout from me on that game. When I first played it last year, I didn't even know the game is actually an action/adventure (with stealth here and there) game, didn't even know how exactly the combat worked and man, I LOVED that feeling, reminded me to good old days where you bought a game for its cover or just because you saw something you might like about it.

The reason people hated the controls for Skyward sword was because a lot of people just flat out dont enjoy motion controls. I know this because I am one of those people. I find any game that uses motion controls a chore to play, especially as I get older, that stuff just isnt enjoyable, and in many instances it flat out hurts my wrists after extended periods of time. If a game causes me physical pain, then thats not good.

I'm another person who just never finishes Assassin's Creed because it's way too damn big, and the mechanics definitely overstay their welcome - the game's need to end sooner and the filler needs to be removed. I don't think it's selling well because it's big... I think it's selling well in spite of it being big. The real question is... out of all the people that bought it, how many people actually finished it, or even half of it? I feel like it's a struggle to even get 50% through Odyssey... I don't think I made even that yet my playtime was dozens of hours.

Disagree about "not missing out by watching a play through".....you're always missing out if you merely watch someone else play a 1-player game you haven't beat yet, whether you realize it for not. Taking the gameplay out of experiencing a game (for the 1st time) is my biggest problem with the streaming age. Agreed about it being a bit too late if you are plugged into gaming news/fandom. The surprise element that might get people to play a game also ironically affects our expectations and therefore final impressions.

The plus version does not have the cool meta "twist" (can't describe because everything is like a spoiler :D), because it has to work on a console. So that takes a lot from the game i think. If you are new to the game, play the free non plus version first.

Persona 3 could definitely use at least a revamp, either by remaster or remake, that combines both female protagonist and controllable party members from P3P with the liveliness of console visuals. I deliberately played P3 FES before touching P4 or P5 because I knew I wouldn't be able to "go back" after getting used to the gameplay modernizations from the recent entries. I think P3 had possibly the strongest plot between all 3 neo games, so a modern release would be a great chance for more people to experience it.

I never finished it, but I adored what I played of Digital Devil Saga. I like to play through the original Persona and 2 games, but those are tricky to maneuver. Despite me having the Persona 2 psp remake, more access to those games can be terrific. Those so many gems that I never got to, so even if they are all ports with a couple more accessible settings, I would love that!

I honestly don’t get why people say Ninja Gaiden is so impossibly hard. Coming from someone who never played Nioh our the souls games.. I breezed through both NG 1 & 2 with relative ease (on medium). I’m saying it because I’d like more people, who are not super into hard games (like me) to give these ones a shot. They are among the most epic and responsive games I’ve ever played. NG3 though.. takes a giant sh*t on the franchise, and spams cheap enemies over and over. It forces you to cheese the game and spam moves, whereas the first two make you feel like a damn superhero and reward improvisation.

I'm about 27 hours into Skyward Sword now, more than half done the game but probably still another ~13 hours to go if memory serves. I am using button controls, and I think it took me about 14 hours to feel comfortable with them. I don't like the motion controls - diagonal sword swings feel awful to me, and I just really hate using motion to control the loftwing and the beetle. The button controls have problems though. There is definitely a latency issue when swinging your sword on your initial swing that really messes with the timing of attacks when you're not given enough time to hit what you intended - that's one of the biggest flaws. Also, I don't know why they didn't use circle-rotations for spin attacks... I feel like left-right and up-down causes spin attacks to be used when I really don't mean to use them. You need to be "fast" to swing the sword at all... but not so fast to avoid performing a spin attack. It's a really stupid nuance that should just be fixed. I gotta wonder if it would have been better if Z-targetting turns on the R-stick sword movements and the camera was the default when you weren't Z-targetting. To me, that would have probably worked a lot better. After 27 hours, I pretty much use Z-targeting and the sword at the same time anyway - I think adjustments could have been made to make this work 100%. I will say this... Skyward Sword would have been my favourite classic 3D Zelda game if it weren't for these controls. As is, I think the WIndwaker or Twilight Princess stand out as being better. Which is a shame, because the ground overworld and dungeon design and music is probably the best out of any of the classic 3D Zelda games. I'm kind of hoping Breath of the Wild 2 takes pointers from Skyward Sword's dungeon design while maintaining the open world - would probably be the best Zelda ever.

That Devil May Cry comment got me heated. The first game is still a 10/10. Also I feel there's an assumption that DMC changed for the better with 3,4 and 5, but there's a good case to be made that the series peaked in multiple aspects with the first game. You can watch Matthewmatosis' video on DMC for elaboration on that viewpoint.

The first game might have been a 10/10 when it released in 2001 but it does not hold up great anymore. I played through the whole series for the first time leading up to DMCV and 1 was rough. 3, 4 and 5 are just far better games, certainly from a gameplay experience, though the atmosphere in 1 is unmatched.

The fact you're sick of people talking about it does not change it. True, it's all virtual but still, games are there to immerse players and make them feel things (I hate being evil in games for instance, it makes me uncomfortable). Anyway, love your work, guys

Bit of a long comment. Apologies. Playing Skyward Sword after 10 years was kinda refreshing... especially after Breath of the Wild. To be quite honest, I just missed the dungeons and the story. I didn't really care all that much for the way BOTW did its story, with you hunting down Link's memories and whatnot... And the dungeons in that game were... well, being honest again, some of the worst dungeons in the franchise. The dungeons were hurt by the fact that in BOTW, once you get off the Plateau, you are pretty much set in terms of your toolkit (ie the ipad)... The dungeons, then, are playable in any order, and have to account for the fact that you're using the same set of tools for their puzzles. You could argue that it's in the "how" the dungeons have you use the slate... but ultimately the "how" wasn't really all that interesting to me? This, plus the fact that all four dungeons shared the same inner aesthetic (down to the bosses), led them to really feeling like they lacked any personality or any sort of staying power. Like, I can't see myself some years down the line thinking back "oh man that one mechanical elephant dungeon whose name I can't even remember was awesome!" This isn't the case with, say, the Ancient Cistern or the Sandship, but this also isn't to say that Skyward Sword dungeons were the best or most original dungeons in the series or anything. They at least left some sort of impression on me, and I generally enjoyed playing through them. The flipside of this, however, is that I really... really didn't care for Skyward Sword's overworld. It felt very disjointed, something that isn't the case with BOTW's overworld, its biggest strength. Not a whole lot to say on this aspect. The lead-up to unlocking dungeons in Skyward Sword was little less of an annoyance to me, and I don't much care for it.

Think of it this way, if there were no divine beast interiors, would BotW receive the same acclaim as it did in 2017? Food for thought, but my inkling is Yes. The climax of each tribe area could've been a longer version of subduing the Beast with your ally. The Beast interiors immediately invite a doomed comparison to previous Zeldas' more official dungeons, but I think Nintendo just wanted to throw a bone to the series dungeon lovers. Perhaps they shouldn't have? The team's main focus was clearly making the best overworld ever, and nearly everything else was designed to align with that. Including the Divine Beasts being just extensive shrines with iPad functions (they don't give you new permanent items cuz it'd force an overworld rebalance). What's crazy is that Fujibayashi directed both SS and BotW, so he's clearly got the brains to handle projects with both overworld+dungeon awesomeness, if they find the right balance for the next game or games.
@JJMomoida
@JJMomoida 3 жыл бұрын
@@kingofthesharks I agree. Had they not done those dungeons, the game would have still gotten praise. I feel that dungeons would have simply been caught in the wave of "Zelda conventions" the developers wanted to overhaul, so I think that, by and large, people would've been fine with it. Oddly enough, BOTW is a game 9-year-old me, who had only played like 3 Zelda games at the time, would have loved far more than present-day me. For that kid who'd played A Link to the Past and got teased with a 3D world in both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask... the idea of exploring a **vastly** expanded land in BOTW would have been extremely enticing and might have almost overlooked the lackluster dungeons. 30-year-old me, however... has played a lot more Zelda games since then... and has grown a little too accustomed to the "Zelda formula" lol... So while I do welcome the fact that they're trying to shake things up with this franchise, I also wish they would find that balance with the next one. For as much as I loved the exploration in BOTW, I really found myself missing some of what would be considered "traditional" elements.

I just ended up going with the scarlet nexus anime. FunImation had early showings for the first two episodes. I’ve had extra expenses this month so it’s been tough choosing what to play.

I feel like DDLC + on console was a mistake. I feel bad for Huber playing it that way. The so called second playthrough are important because the glitch and the ending on the first time will disturb you and you will not get it if you fast forward the games. Also there are lot of pc stuff that made the games better.

I really didn't like Skyward Swords as a whole and it was the first Zelda I actually had to push myself in order to finish it. I really wanted to be over... but, I really like the slow intro. I think that entire Skyloft introduction is the best part of the game. I was very interested in that part.. then it was only downhill from there.

I generally prefer the first area in most games. So with Dragon Age Inquisition it's The Hinterlands, a wonderful map --- easily the best in the whole game as far as I'm concerned, and I love that game --- somehow gets the reputation as being lame. And for The Witcher 3 I love White Orchard, I wish the whole game was comprised of maps just that size.

55:22 Do you want to revisit Ninja Gaiden? Then buy Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2 on the Xbox store, or buy those discs (I recommend the vanilla version of Ninja Gaiden 1, but that's only playable on an original Xbox or 360) and play them on Xbox. Unless you prefer the Sigma versions then there is no reason to buy the "Master Collection". Agree about Razor's Edge, though, it's a good game. The story is terrible, it feels like the B team made a Ninja Gaiden (and they did), but it's still a good game.

58:09 Ninja Gaiden has Dead or Alive characters, not the other way around. Unless we are counting DoA1 which saw Itagaki pull in Ryu because he was a fan of NES Gaiden and he was making the game for Tecmo anyhow.

Ryu Hayabusa has been in multiple Dead or Alive games. Like, most of them and even if he's not present people mention his name in the games all the time.
@charoleawood
@charoleawood 3 жыл бұрын
@@Badalight I am perfectly aware of that, I mentioned DoA1 in my post. Yes, Ryu is a staple of Dead or Alive, I should know, DoA2 Ultimate is my favorite game of all time tied with Ninja Gaiden 2. You can't have DoA without Ryu, of course. So, my point is that Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden has Dead or Alive characters, even Ryu can be looked at as coming from Dead or Alive after a fashion given he's Team Ninja's Ryu, not the original NES Ninja Gaiden's Ryu. Ninja Gaiden also has Ayane who was created for Dead or Alive, not Ninja Gaiden. And then Kasumi appears in Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma and as DLC in Razor's Edge. Though I do see that DoA 5 did bring Rachel to the roster, a character created for Ninja Gaiden, so I'll give you that.

Feel that Huber's Doki Doki experience is that sensation when you watch a M Night Shyamalan movie. You watch it expecting a twist. And when the twist happens, it's either underwhelming or not surprising.

On the irritating phrases topic: the way Ben uses _super_ as an adverb all the time is-respectfully-so fucking annoying to me (i.e., "One thing about x that I super love..."). I've refrained from making my grievance known in the comments for months b/c I didn't want to be a dick, but in that time it's started spreading to the other Allies' vernacular. MinnMax's Suriel Vasquez is is public enemy #2, as he too is a frequent offender of such heinous usage of _super_ That is all.
