I was awaiting the Switch release (not much of a PC gamer) and it's definitely in my top 3 games released last year, even beating out Mario Odyssey. I've not done everything and seen all the endings yet, but I might have to agree with the sentiment of best Metroidvania. It's simply a masterpiece.

Couldn't agree more. I was saving myself for the Switch version and I'm so blown away. Every time I sit down to play it I find myself saying out loud "How is this game *this* good!?" it feels genuinely wrong that it's only 15$ Not only is it the best Metroidvania game imo, it's secretly one of the best Souls games too.

Rune Soldier All I'll say is, it gets better and better as it goes along. I remember being like 5-6 hours in and feeling like ok its pretty good, I should probably finish it today, for completion sake, unaware of its actual size. But in the next couple of hours I got completely hooked and invested in the world and the story. Fast forward the next 35 or so ingame hours, im 100%ing the game and it ended up being my goty.

I agree with Ben on the Switch topic. Within the last 4 weeks we saw amazing games like Hollow Knight, Fortnite, Mario Tennis Aces, Donkey Kong Adventure (= substantial Mario + Rabbids standalone expansion), Sushi Striker, Octo Expansion, Lumines Rematered, Yoku's Island Express, Pixeljunk Monsters 2, Ikaruga and demos for Octopath Traveler and Captain Toad on there...I'm seriously overwhelmed right now, and games like Octopath, Crash, Wolfenstein, inside, Captain Toad etc. are right around the corner. I own a PS4 as well, but the Switch has become my go to indie platform and I even abandoned my Fortnite PS4 account, because I can play it wherever I go now, never looked back. Honeymoon phase is definitely not over for me, in fact I'm probably spending more time playing on Switch than ever before.

Do NOT push back Dragon Quest. I guarantee that anyone who's in the target audience isn't concerned about a conflict with any of the "hot" releases. It's the only game I truly want to play of all those others, although I will - as a gamer - play them all. Some of us are only hardcore gamers because of traditonal JRPGs, and could not care less ultimately about the Battlefields or Assassin Creeds, or even the Red Deads.

I'm sure Spider-Man will be a quality experience, but think about how depressing this Fall season would be without Dragon Quest for gamers who primarily love Japanese games. I could be wrong, but CoD/BF/AC/RDR seem to share a player base. Push Spider-Man back!!!! I appreciate all good games, but I feel like I slog through mediocre waifu simulators and action/shooters for way too long throughout the year. I have September marked out with my job specifically for DQ. Use your power of will, Huber, to make it not get delayed!

Pokemon gen 5 will definitely satisfy your itch for a good narrative for a Pokemon game. For difficulty, those games are probably harder than most other Pokemon games, but still not "hard" in a general sense. I appreciate the attempt Gamefreak made with Sun and Moon for story, but like Ben said, it really fell flat, rushing its plot points in the second half, expecting you to care a ton with little buildup.

Corrections for Huber’s Fortnite section. You definitely cannot 1 shot headshot with a pump or any other shotgun anymore. That was the point of the nerf. No gun can 1 shot you if you have 200 health except the Bolt Action sniper rifle. Also he said ammo is scarce...I’ve never found that to be true at all. Unless you just hide in a bush the whole time by the end of the game you should have minimum 150 AR ammo and minimum 30 shotgun ammo. Usually you have like 300 ar and 50 shotgun though.

I can kind of agree with Huber about Switch, only for the fact that despite getting a Switch last October, I still play my PS4 way more. But, thankfully Hollow Knight finally came out and being one of the reasons I got a Switch to begin with, I'm delighted to be playing Switch more atm.

Instantly checked the time stamps to see if Hollow Knight was mentioned and had to jump to it immediately. Over the past couple of weeks I've been completely absorbed by that wonderful game. If you have a Switch or a PC and you're on the fence about it, don't hesitate and dive in. For its price point it's an absolute steal and I can't recommend it enough.

The Dragon Quest talk is just depressing because yeah, XI is TOTALLY dead on arrival. Square Enix USA had never cared about Dragon Quest. Hell, VIII only sold well originally because of that FFXII demo.

Honestly, I just suspect Square Enix knows it does have a fan base here but they distinctly know it's their lowest selling property in the West so they have little to no interest in really pushing it. Nintendo has been the only company to ever REALLY push Dragon Quest in the West, be it from the original on the NES to IX on DS, they've always saw its worth.

But Japan itself will eat up Dragon Quest no matter where its on, even with their dwindling interest in some consoles. That is one of the things other than FF and Persona which are guaranteed money makers. DQ especially, its almost as much a national thing there as Doraemon.

I agree, the honey moon phase of the Switch was totally 2017 and they have not planned 2018 good enough ahead of time. I worry 2019 will be the same. There's a lot if indies for sure Ben, and unlike Huber I do use my Switch on the go and for this the system is still very relevant to me, but I'm looking for the exciting things like Xeno 2 and Zelda and Mario. All in all, the direct E3 was very disappointing for anyone who is not interested in 20m of Smash patch notes.

What you forget is that not everything appeals the same to everyone. For me 2017 was great because of Zelda, Mario and Xenoblade 2. I'm looking forward to Pokemon, looking at 2019, and that's about it. Probably gonna come out towards the end of the year.

Gen 6 has a lot of the top tier Pokemon in terms of design and pokedex entries, which was a nice change from older games. Usually a new gen has 2 or 3 cool new Pokemon but I gotta give it to Alolan Pokemon, they're great

I went the opposite way to Huber with this whole Fortnite cross progression business. Being able to play Fortnite on the go and have that progression link to the Xbox version (which i hadnt even considered downloading before this whole thing) and future Android version was enough to make me leave 3 seasons worth of unlocks behind on PS4.

I am totally into going with MS next gen if they keep backwards compatibility enhanced games going. Next Xbox being better than One X and still having this enhanced graphics for all the old titles is very, very strong. 100% agree. Being a game journalist is a terrible career choice if you want to enjoy games to their fullest. With the exception of online games, it's almost always better to wait for patches, price drops, and for the dlc to finish releasing.

I just played Earthbound for the first time a little over a month ago on my wii u (never had a snes), and man what a great game. The characters, music, story, dialogue, and atmosphere/level design are all fantastic. It's such a charming game. I loved it so much, and I hope you do too!

About the HotTaKe: Personally, no big game is able to swallow the games of my preference although many fishes may get swallowed by the bigger fishes in today overpopulated ocean of video games. I am not the type of gamer who follow the mass and target on scooping up the biggest fishes. From now to the end of this year, the only other game that I may consider picking up is the PS4 version of Divinity Original Sin 2. Anyway, by the end of the day, if the end result is that all the smaller fishes which suit my taste become extinct, well....I stop eating fish - money saved.

Don’t forget, Ben, you can Overcharm in Hollow Knight. If you try to use one that exceeds your notches keep selecting it and you equip it and become Overcharmed, you will take 2x damage, but you’ll have that extra charm.

I think certain charms in Hollow Knight are "essential" for certain people like after a few hours in unless I was exploring a new area I had no need for the map marker charm. The game is on par with if not the best of Metroid/Vanias in my opinion. It was my personal GOTY last year.

@Huber - there are still lots of reasons to play in handheld! I typically only play my switch at home.. but sometimes I play in bed, sometimes I let my GF use the TV to play persona 5, sometimes there's a movie on or something else... It's all just even better because you can take it on the airplane, to your friends and family's, etc. Personally, I try and get every game on switch unless I feel the game is compromised.

For the 1st time in a looooong time Nintendo is actively working on getting lots of 3rd party titles on their system and to see people dismiss it is just frustrating. Also I play handheld all the time, even just on the couch at home.

Alan Garcia I'll look into it. So I compared last year's October-December period to this year's (what we know of it) including expected playtime and yes last year's was nuts too. It's roughly comparable, highly dependant on what games you consider 'important' enough for them to cover and what games will be added over time. I would personally say it's a little crazier this year. A little meaning, potentially 100-200 hours of playtime. Which doesn't mean in itself that postponing GotY discussions is a bad idea, considering that in the current structure it will always be tough to take December games into account properly. But I suppose there is a reason why the EasyAllies and audience-Allies would prefer to keep GotY talk around the end of the year. Like the Holiday spirit, starting off a new year fresh. An alternative would be to not count December as part of that year, but as part of the next year. I suppose that would kind of kill the spirit of GotY? Or does basically excluding the last games of a year because of time constraints mean we're killing what GotY is supposed to be? Then again: if it is becoming harder over time to have people play most of the 'bigger' games each year... Then that's a reality we'll just have to face. Either way I want the Allies to just do what they think is right. The main reason I wrote that post was to indicate that I'm open to change if that provides them stress relief/a more satisfying closure to the year.

I really enjoy Mario Tennis Aces. The core gameplay is super deep + the adventure mode was fun and had the perfect amount of variation. I hope more modes will be added in the future because the core game is great and worth the 60$ IMO.

Regarding Nintendo's 2018 I'm with Huber on a personal level. The only games I've been interested in is Octopath and Mario Tennis (too expensive though, should be like Rocket League), I don't even like Smash. So for me 2018 have sucked for me, but just as Huber I have the other consoles aswell and have had a lot to play on my PS4. If I only had the switch I would have a lot of indies to play, I believe I have around 20 quality indie titles on my watch list to play. And I think from a buisness standpoint Nintendo are doing great with the ports and getting new stuff almost every month, you can't say the same about Sony or MS. There is always something new and something for everyone I would say. So you'll get at least 2 great exclusives per year from nintendo, which is fine it's similar to the amount of Sony imo. Then it's big games vs indies where I usually prefer indies, however I'm also looking to play big 3D games as it gives me another kind of feeling and that is something the switch is lacking imo, which can make it feel a bit underwhelming sometimes.

Ben, most of us just don't have the wherewithal to "give something a chance" when we have a history with these games and have thus pre-judge the next ones. And I'm not just talking money - I have the bankroll to buy video games at your pace, but I also work 60 hours a week in a non-video games job to get that bankroll. You have the luxury to both have the time and money to have such an open attitude towards games. I don't. I'm still trying to finish the original (rebooted) Tomb Raider, the original Metro, and I haven't even started Doom or the new Wolfenstein's, and I've owned them since Day 1. I'm still trying to finish The Witcher 3. Forget games-as-a-service like WoW, Warframe, D3 (whose new season just started), Fortnite/PUBG....no time at all for any of that.

Personally I feel if Microsoft had Nintendo's 2018 lineup they would be getting slaughtered for having no good exclusives but Nintendo seems to get a pass everytime.

Downgraded ports of 3rd party AAA games would do nothing for the Switch. It needs tailor-made games, such as Octopath, games that can take Switch's unique capabilities and offer real value out of those, indies for example, are prime candidates for taking advantage of the portability aspect. When I see the Switch's second semester, it looks extremely healthy for me and I have to wonder, what the hell are people complaining about. I guess I can understand if it's a matter of taste, or the need for the highest possible graphical fidelity, but if your gripe is with the range, quantity or quality, then I don't see your point. I just find it hard to get excited about most indy games. 2d platformers/sidescrollers were never really my jam. I've tried tons of those games and though I've enjoyed some they're rarely ever able to hold my attention for long. I generally come away wishing I'd played some other game. Something else, and you can obviously debate whether this is fair or not, is that 2018 for the switch has been padded out with a lot of ports (and to a lesser extent expansions) and while that can be great for some it's not going to get people nearly as excited as brand new games. Especially when Nintendo is charging full price or more on a lot of these older titles (I'm looking at you tropical freeze). All that said, I think if Smash Bros had come out in September like people were expecting we probably wouldn't even be having this conversation but since it is that means that switch will have gone an entire year without a AAA exclusive and based on Nintendo's shaky history it's understandable that some consumers are getting restless.

Atlas Films I mean, Mario Tennis is pretty AAA, and so is Pokemon. I agree it is a weaker year overall than 2017, especially if you owned Wii u, but I still think the Switch has plenty of cool exclusives/ports worth picking up.

Mario Tennis is definitely a B if not C tier Nintendo series. I think that's part of the reason Huber keeps saying it's not worth $60 (with Ben sort of agreeing) and based on most of the reviews and gamer comments, Mario Tennis seems to have solid core mechanisms but everything else feels rushed and half baked. As for Pokemon, I'd totally agree with you if this was a full fledged core Pokemon RPG but that's not what this is. It's a stop gap game. Nintendo has basically admitted as much. It might still be good but it doesn't look like as much time or money has been put into Let's Go as you'd expect from a AAA Pokemon.

I'm excited for the balance changes in Fortnite. Shotguns were laughably op for so long. The image of fortnite in my mind is people hopping like bunnies shooting shottys and everything Huber said is accurate as well.

Dale Alling that isn't true at all, just because Huber is enjoying himself with fortnite doesn't mean that he has narrow tastes. Just look at his interest in games like Dragon quest and persona. Or all of his 7 games

I think Sun & Moon are the best Pokémon games in a while. Going back from them is just more of the same old stuff. Although, Sun & Moon aren’t hard either. Ben, I tried Ultra Sun and the beginning felt too much like Sun so I stopped playing. It’s interesting that everyone likes to fill the Pokédex. I’ve never had that desire. I just catch 1 of a type I like, until later on when I fill my team with the highest base stat Pokémon I can find. I usually just try to get through the story. Blood at 2:14:45 should be a gif. Too real 😄 Hope you have a good time off Ben.

It's not like Sony didn't have a no-crossplay policy when they were busy winning over the people at the start of the PS4 vs Xbox cycle. They didn't make up this policy because it's new, people are just trying to attack it because of specifically two games (Fortnite and Rocket League) and because Xbox is desperate to improve their image. Gamepass gives all first party games.. which amounts to what titles that make it worth it, exactly? The idea of multiconsole, crossplay accounts is also more of a recent thing - do you really expect all games with accounts and microtransactions to carry over to every platform the game is on, or are you just in arms about it because it's Fortnite?

I'm not stressing too much for the fall. The only games i'm getting from here till December are Spider Man, Red Dead, Life is Strange, and maybe Spyro. I've come to terms with myself there are just some games I have to pass on and yeah it sucks but its just what has to happen. Maybe when it slows down to a halt I will get back to them. Also I think the possibility of dragon quest coming to switch is high so that might cause people to wait on dragon quest as well.

The third person view being against the want for skins can be proven wrong with Overwatch. It does have emotes to go third person but it's 95% can't see your self yet loot boxes and micro transactions are almost all about the skins

I feel like Switch is a hard in 2018 sell when you have to start with multiplatform indie games, DLC for games from 2017 and smaller first party games like mario party or mario tennis. 2017 was a big year and 2019 could be great but 2018 doesn't get me excited especially when other platforms have bigger releases and the same multiplatform indies like Celeste.

Ben, the passionate talk about Hollow Knight makes me so incredibly happy. I'd been following the kickstarter for that game for a long time and was hoping so badly it would become a sleeper hit after I played the entire thing, and then finally people started understanding just how incredible this game really is and the momentum was huge as more people found it. Now that's it's finally out on switch everyone can enjoy this masterpiece including all that amazing free DLC. :D

I feel Huber's criticism of the Switch is a little unfair. You can't really fault the system if you don't actively take advantage of the main feature. As he said, it's more of a life style thing but then taking that and applying it to the Switch and making it a problem of the system itself is weird. Also comparing the f2p Fortnite to something like Mario Tennis feels strange because it's pretty much the value that is assigned to those games by the publisher/dev. So you could really go around and apply that to every game which is kinda unfair because you can't just expect them to release it in a f2p model, or any other model. It's a criticism I always hear, not only in regards to Nintendo. Saying "it should be priced this way, because xyz" is not a good argument just because you feel that's how it should be based on some arbitrary reason.

I think he just enjoys a different gaming "experience" than what the Switch is offering. If you have the luxury of being able to spend 5 hours a day in front of your 4K TV playing the most ultrarealistic AAA game with HDR and that is mostly what you care about, you're not going to be playing the Switch. It doesn't matter how portable it is or how many multiplats come to it.

BurnerMan54 I have a PS4pro and 4K HDR tv, but play it just as much as my Switch (I play pretty much all indies on it for example and most of the exclusives). I probably won't play PS4 as much as I usually do untill September when Dragon Quest, Spyro and Spiderman launches while I am hyped for Octopath, Monster Hunter and Captain Toad which all come out in the next two months.

Rune Soldier Alright, so my PS4 is awful, because I can't play it portable? To me that is kinda like saying you hate Fifa 2018 because it is not a game about Basketball. You can say that the Switch as a system doesn't appeal to you so much because you are more into power and don't really care about portability, but that is not really the fault of the system, because it was never intended or marketed as the ultimate graphical powerhouse. You can even say it is a drawback or a trade, but it isn't a fault.

Either it is also the fault of Sony for not making the PS4 portable since many people don't have time or don't want to play games in front of their TV or it can't be the fault of the Nintendo that the Switch isn't a powerful home console. Doom without motion aiming (be that mouse or joycon motion) is a grossly inferior experience. Obviously PC is best, but it trades off with price, and even that's not true for every experience. I've played Celeste on both PC and Switch and that game with and without HD rumble is a night and day difference, the PC version simply isn't as tight because it gives you less feedback. Everything is a trade, and the fact that the PS4 can't do motion aiming and has a really loose rumble are trade-offs; but everything is a trade-off, that doesn't mean it's a fault.
