The interesting thing is had Columbo not been so thorough, Kingston could STILL have got away with it - or at least, used what few defenses he had to buy himself a bit more time. Columbo gradually pares away his remaining counter-arguments until he has nothing left. It's like watching an amazing game of chess - Columbo carefully removes anything he could use, then the reveal of the gloves is the checkmate.

The glove reveal gets all the glory, and it's a fantastic way to end things, but the Captain saying "We know what you thought, Mr. Kingston" is what cinches it for me. The reveal that he was never actually working behind Columbo's back, but playing into his hands instead.

Love whenever there's a "killer tries to get Columbo taken off the case" plotline. None of them can imagine that another well-connected criminal has tried the same thing before! I bet Columbo's superiors are pretty bored of that trick. And of course Columbo, via Falk, plays the hapless flop perfectly. "Aw gee, they took me off da case..."

i mean, you don't become lieutenant over night, or without good reason either. honestly, id be very interested in a prequel series, where he's just starting out at the bottom of the pecking order, how much harder it would've been to go to the lengths we see him to catch these criminals (or at least prove to them that they know they did it, even if they both know he can't bring them fully to justice)

@@gavriellarutigliano2356 In the prequel, the Captain would have been partners with Joe Friday about 15-20 years before. I mean literally, because the actor, Barney Phillips, played Joe Friday's partner in several episodes of Dragnet. Los Angeles police department, he moved up from being a detective and partner to Joe Friday, to being Captain and Columbo's boss. Maybe at the time he was partners with Joe Friday, Columbo was still just a patrolman in uniform. I;'d like to see a scene with Friday and Columbo, Friday as sergeant and Columbo as just a regular cop, LOL.

I love the format of the Columbo mysteries. In most mysteries, we have 5-6 suspects and we don't which one of them did it until the very end. We're as much in the dark as the detective is. In a "Columbo" episode, we know who the killer is right from the start of the episode. We know how he did it and we know how he covered his tracks. We (the audience) have all the information that Columbo lacks and the fun is watching him try to figure it out.

Actually it might surprise you that Columbo's car is a 1959 Peugeot 403 cabriolet. Only 504 convertibles were manufactured that year. So it's a very rare classic car. Although even today it doesn't have much value as far as collectability, it's still a classic (even more so as being Columbo's car)

I had to watch this episode countless times to really appreciate the genius storytelling. Every major character has an arc. And it totally reverses our initial impression. Dale at first appears to be the consumate art critic with gobs of natural talent. His Aunt, at first appears to be a dotty, weird and eccentric lady. By the end of the episode, however, we learn that the Aunt was the true genius behind the famous art collection, as she was the one who actually chose the initial paintings when they were first purchased. According to her, a few turned out to be winners. Dale, however, turns out to be a not-so-special art critic who was actually riding the coattails of his Aunt's success.

No words necessary, his eyes say it all: "Come on man, you know it, I know it, we all know it, you're guilty of murder. When you're in a hole, stopping digging, so come on, have some dignity, don't demean yourself anymore than you already have done." All that from a 5 second shot of Peter Falk's body language and non-verbal communication. Absolutely brilliant, subtle acting.
