Animal Crossing (GC): Fishing Guide!

I can't confirm or deny that. If you were to be able to catch the whale, it would be an Arapaima, and show an Able Sisters quote. That's the dialogue used for unavailable text. The actual spawn rate of the whale is between 1 - 4% and can only be seen when going to the island (there's a rumored glitch where it can appear anywhere else in the water). In any case, finding it takes plenty of patience.

I remember on one of my resets I started a new town at like 3am and in all the commotion of doing Tom Nook's errands, I encountered a fish that was 4x the size of a coelacanth (and smaller than the whale in the linked picture) -- but I didn't have a fishing rod yet, so I strategically navigated back to Tom Nook's shop which was near enough to not reset the acre, got a fishing rod, and came back to it and failed to capture it. I feel a little better knowing that there was nothing in store for me if I did manage to catch it. It felt horrible having this big fish story sound like a great big playground rumor, before the era of recording all my gameplay.

You sure it wasn't just a regularly sized Arapaima? I've never heard of an occurrence where the fish was 4x the size of a Coelacanth (which would be size 20 in this case). Arapaima are a size six though they still seem considerably larger. If anything, this would have been one of those exceptionally rare glitches where a fish spawns somewhere off the marker then as a result reflects in the in-game water at a much larger scale. If that were the case, it might not even react to the fishing rod since it isn't actually there. This is such an exceedingly rare glitch that it's not quite easy to test it out. At least we know for a fact that the whale isn't a glitch, because it's actually referenced in the game's files.

@@FrameRater Yeah, in the very least it was larger than an Arapaima by some degree. It was so large that I could hardly even figure out where to put the lure where it could see it properly. I regularly complete my museums so it was certainly an oddity by my 8th new village. The only other thing of note was that it was narrower than the whale pictured there, and, wasn't blurry along its edges. It also didn't clip under the terrain like that since it faced parallel to the ground, I had to fish it from a corner bridge.

11:23 from my experience the type of fish is only determined AFTER you have reeled it in, when savestating after i’ve gotten trash, reloaded said state and got an actual fish. this happened to me just yesterday since and wanted to make a correction for anyone else who’s emulating the game and curious

I can’t find a jellyfish ANYWHERE. Throughout the whole month of August so far, not a single one has shown up at ALL, no matter how long I’ve looked EVERYWHERE. I ONLY kept getting mostly sea basses. Can someone please explain why this is happening to me? :(
