The piece was performed by Scott Ross.
This is my favourite performance of the piece, and it was removed from KZbin, so I am uploading it. If, however, there should be a reason to remove the video, I'd appreciate it to be informed.
I'm only someone who enjoys music, so if you have questions, don't expect me to know too much!
It seems that trying to find Scott Ross' performances for sale is very hard. Even though I looked for to buy albums, I only managed to find download links online. (except for his Scarlatti set and a DVD)
If anyone knows how to find them, I think a lot of people would be glad to know here!

I enjoyed this, Mr. Ross' version greatly when first I heard it. Was disappointed when it was removed. I'd gladly purchase it if it was available. It seems those who own the rights to Mr. Ross' genius are not willing ( or unable) to republish his work for those of us who weren't fortunate to enjoy his artistry while he was alive. Most unfortunate.

My favorite interpretation of this piece for all times. It's the benchmark for me when I try to play the piece! It's also not simply just another great piece played by genius Scott Ross, but also the piece itself immediately creates a feeling of pureness that connects you with to outer world at an extremely intense introverted point of view.

I loved this track by Scott Ross which was part of an album in the early 1980's. But the album, like so many things, was lost and the track was never credited properly. I never forgot this music though. It was only about 30 years later that I found it again! I so love it.

My favorite recording is the vinyl-only Nonesuch recording by Aimee Van de Wiele. The pacing is perfect, the tone gentle, lovely and contemplative. Similarly to other wonderful Nonesuch harpsichord music vinyl records,in enthralling performances, it has sadly not been released on CD. This comes close in to Van de Wiele's tempo. I don't care for the instrument sound, but the playing is fine! Thank you!

Indeed: this is one of the truly great readings. I don't need to say any more! By the way everyone- does anyone else think of death listening to Les Barr. Myst. or am I by myself here. Not Death as such, but rather a tranquil ending of a good life... a final recollection of one's life without any regrets, except a gentle regret that it is about to end. I find it especially moving that Couprin writes "Vivant" as an instruction to the player.

I downloaded the sheet music to this a couple days ago and am having great fun learning it. I just need to learn the 'troisième couplet' (the third 'verse' sort of section before the theme plays for the last time) and I'll have it down, more or less. It's even more fun to play than to listen to, hehe.

You are so right when you say “baroque clockwork” nazis that post their junk....so true, so true! I can’t really add to your comment, but I’ll try...they all play, like you say, the same hyper-speed tempos, losing all melody and emotion and missing the mystery that so many of these pieces possess. I play alot of Baroque music and I vary the tempo throughout the piece to let it actually “breathe” without rushing headlong into the ending.

So you can see in this piece a reference to a game (that would fit in nicely with the pastoral context) or a metaphor of the hazards of life, or just lean back, close your eyes, and enjoy. Here's to Scott, the greatest of harpsichordists.

Another explanation of the title - by far the best I know of - is in Wikipedia, The mysterious barricades (impossible to get the link through). It's rather obvious that the piece is all about movement: picking up speed, slowing down, stopping, starting again. The movement seems to be perfectly adapted to the pace of a person running, the elegance of the music, perhaps, suggesting a lady rather than a man.

There's no indication in the score to slow down or speed up, so really, we don't know if that was the intended 'feel' of the piece. Also, it doesn't sound very lady-like to me, it's written entirely in the base clef and kind of hefty with thick harmonies. When I play this, I don't ever stop, I try to make it feel like it's rolling along, speeding up and slowing down but not ever jolting to a stop. That said, this is a nice performance.

Just a suggestion, but I think if you listen to more Baroque music you'll find that it's not inferior to more modern music. Music isn't getting better over time, it's just changing.

Ok. Lots to be said about just this one piece of Couperin’s. First off, the tempo marking as indicated by the composer himself, which is “Vivement.” According to J.J. Rousseau in his ‘Dictionaire de Musique” he defines “Vivement” as ‘lively’ or simply ‘vif’ a French word for fast, to put it succinctly. So, what was a Frenchman’s idea in the early 18th century of “fast”? There were no high-speed trains, subways, buses, cars or the power of the internet. So, in my own, personal opinion, a Frenchman (or woman) in the early 1700’s perhaps, and most probably so, had a different idea of speed. What was “vivement” to them? I suggest that it was much slower than we interpret it today in the 21st century of America. When I play this piece I interpret vivement simply as to give the piece a “lively” meaning “alive” quality to the music. Not fast. But certainly not “gravement”. I love on a modern piano using the sustain pedal to bring out the absolutely lovely melodious chord-work of this piece. It rings like a bell, and I have to think that Couperin was perfectly aware of the tolling bells of Le Notre Dame cathedral. This piece exudes such a tolling of bells, and I choose to interpret the piece in this way. Thank you and enjoy the popcorn!

Well that escalated quickly... I've read that it's referring to a woman's eyelashes. I can't see it having anything to do with a girl's hymen. Just my opinion though.

One time I had to perform the Marcello oboe concerto as the keyboardist (on a harpsichord with black keys) with an orchestra. I had rehearsed it on my piano all week and I was used to looking at my fingers once in a while. They turned the lights out during the performance and I was basically playing blindfolded. I pulled it off was a great performance - but I always think about that event when people ask why the keys changed from black to white. As performance was modernized into the 1800s, at some point, most keyboard makers began to realize I think that dim lights equal an inability to look at your hands in order to make sure you're spot on the notes. And yes, I am aware that you don't have to look at your hands. I'm not looking at my hands while typing. But I was young back then.

The most straightforward explanation is that ivory is more expensive than ebony (black wood). Using ivory on fewer keys yields the greatest cost advantage.
