Goodness gracious, gold balls of water! Pretty interesting, nicely discombobulated. I was expecting metal electrodes going into the water to check for refills, but a position sensor will also do. The problem is, it can give false readings from the jug/lid just lying there, but hey, everything has trade-offs.

There are many types of counters and timers on the various Brita jugs or licensed Brita compatibles. I have one with a fully mechanical counter with a dial that moves forward every time you slide the louvers to let the water flow into the jug. One of the disadvantages of these louvers is that they retain water droplets which leave scale deposits on the joints. I therefore have to periodically remove the louvers to clean it properly.

This is a micro-controller, not an arrangement of counters. Most micro-controllers have a built in RC oscillator block that can run fast, but is not accurate. The 8-bit PIC micro-controllers have an RC oscillator that can run at up to 8 MHz, with an accuracy of 1%. No need for an external quartz in a lot of applications, like this one!

They've only got to remind you to change the filter once and it's paid for itself. The problem with water filters for the manufacturer is that most people forget to change them for extended periods. Like inkjet printers, cartridge razors etc the initial hardware purchase is a loss leader for the manufacturer. Once you are locked into their brand you are stuck paying for expensive consumables. It's called a loss-leader in the manufacturing world. Some of the key indicators of this are proprietary fitment to prevent the use of generic alternatives (like the Brita filters), A chip that disables the printer if it isn't present or you try to refill it (inkjet printers etc). I heard that Dymo started doing that with the LetraTag machines - in that case you can buy a complete ASCII label maker for $40, but they charge you $15 or more for a 4m label cartridge. I don't know if Dymo actually managed to do this, I'm hanging on to my old one and buy generic labels for a buck each. Even some 3D printer companies tried to do it to lock you into their very expensive and small rolls of filament, but that didn't go so well for them I think. DIY hobbyists that run 3D printers tend to be a bit more savvy about that sort of thing. In most cases there's also a little extra sting in the tail in that using third party consumables will void the warranty.

Just as a heads up. I respect your caution around the cr2450 lithium battery but you can be more rough with those. Directly shorting the battery wont cause a fire or anything. It can get warm if shorted for a long time but cutting it off the board like that youll be fine. I work at a battery store and have for jearly 10 years (jesus its really been that long) and the way we atore old ones is just on a dmall cardboard box all just mixed together. They short out on each other and fully discharge this way. Never had an issue with these. However the alkaline button cell batteries (like a76 or lr44) will actually explode if tossed into these boxes. Those being shorted causes them to build up pressure and they just pop. It sounds like a weak firecracker when it happens.

Hey, a very interesting video. I think it might be a microcontroller. In my workshop in Poland, I very often open integrated circuits and then read their markings under a microscope. Then, if possible, I take the same PCB with this chip and write my own code on it, just like in Arduino. As a point of honor, I decided to make "BLINK" on everything I could. I have already blinked a heat meter, a central heating furnace controller, a microwave board, a toothbrush and a hundred other devices. It is great fun for me, and my viewers learn new things. Our oldest Brita jug had a lid with a door that you had to open to fill and that one had a mechanical counter, so each time you opened the door it counted down litres to the demise of the filter. The modern ones have a compact little unit with a start button and a bar graph LCD; you hold the start button down whenever you change the filter to get the display to 100% and it goes down by time, not by the number of times you fill the jug. I have two of these timers, one completely dead and the other very low on juice because the non-replaceable lithium coin cell has depleted. Since they just pop out, at least the UK ones do, I always thought it was somewhat wasteful, but the jugs develop an internal roughness that seems to attract the growth of nasties like algae... this is despite always hand washing the jugs, I don't know what would happen in a dishwasher. We just replace the jug - they are the cheap part and Brita make their money from the filters, just like HP et al do with inkjet cartridges.

@@wiesejay Honestly, it was easier to just replace the jug. I know this is bad but at least the old jugs went into the recycling bin. We did use a bit of Milton at first but the recurrence just became wearing, hence the new jug. The later ones are a pain though, the batteries give out long before the jug is past its best - changing them is too destructive, so the manufacturers are dicks.

It actually counts out the number of times you pour. Not sure what amount of water they calculate you filling but after a certain number of glasses you fill, the red LED will light. Your version seems to be more secure than the one I have which has a much smaller battery. Their original version had a membrane with a clock mechanism that did indeed count the number of times the thing was filled. They seem to change the way they measure the filter usage every few years.

Just a fancy gravity tilt switch Gold plating the ball bearings was overkill on the corrosion resistance Steel ball bearings are plenty corrosion resistant for the application The entire unit is hermetically sealed after all Some nice parts to scrounge tho' Multi colour LEDs, a tilt switch and an uncommon size of pcb mount battery If you remove the lids anyway, you could put the battery to good use in a project I wonder if you can safely trickle charge that battery the same as the cmos backup battery on a motherboard?

Using the Big Clive approach on this one, short of doing the circuit diagram. Also gold contacts? Not even computer mice do that on their micro-switches where you'd expect them to last, so Brita is spending a bit more pennies than you'd think on this one.

I like that it's actually gold plated. I've seen too many ball-bearing tilt sensors in toys and gimmicky 'tool' accessories corrode into useless dust. ... and the surprisingly rust-proof swinging weight/contact in the "remote sensor" (Sears-)Craftsman bundled with Chamberlain's garage openers chronically [got] stuck on the crude axle that [kept] it captive, resulting in far too many fights with my family constantly taking turns hitting the button because the sensor -lies- [erroneously tells them falsehoods] that they blame me for instead just looking with their own eyes ... I just realized while typing that that [after an hour's break] I still have intense anger and resentment hyper-specifically focused on that thing after a decade since I last unplugged it; So I went and smashed it to splinters with a hammer instead of holding onto the coerced "promise" that I'd eventually scavenge a working tilt sensor that _actually_ works and [willingly] re-activate it. Still slightly mystified why Sears never paid Chamberlain to supply their version of the "remote sensor"; but at least now I won't be repressing that frustration every time I get the car keys.

The Pur filtered pitcher i have at home uses ultrasonics (confirmed with a transducer and a scope) and i believe it monitors how fast water goes through the filter but never bothered to test it (or even use it, i can taste)

It's astounding the amount of engineering, technology, material, and expense put into something so needless and ultimately misleading. But then that sort of describes the world we live in today. I'm sure they've done the research and the accountants have determined it will remind (trick) a sufficient number of people into purchasing replacement filters to more than adequacy recover the expense plus a sufficient amount of added profit. Again, a rather good description of the world we live in today.

Any idea why they didn't used an accelerometer or gyroscope chip? It would have consumed the battery too quickly? The accelerometers chips they have low power mode and can wake-up the processor. I'm thinking the vibration of the refrigerator could have waken up too frequently the processor and drain the battery quickly.

Besides those two reasons, some of the microprocessors at this price point don't talk i2c or faster I/O, especially w/o an oscillator of some sort. It wouldn't surprise me if most of the accelerometer or gyroscope chips need at least an i2c buss to handle the data for all three axis.

The (now defunct) Meade telescope company used a rolling ball in a plastic case, you could hear it click. It was not gold plated in there that I could see in their multi-thousand dollar scopes.

There was a toy Battlestar Galactica that had the advanced version of the ball bearing switch. I think it did use a drop of mercury instead of the ball bearing. The bottom of the sensor was dished out so the ball would tend to rest there on the middle contact. Four more contacts could come in contact with the ball if the space ship were rolled or pitched and based on that the tone of an oscillator would change so you could get those hyper-realistic revving engine sounds in vacuum. The sensor was much smaller though, about the size of a small metal jacketed transistor, or some surface mount electrolytic capacitors.

I think that what you read off as 8022 was actually 8/22, meaning it was likely a date code of production in Argust of 2022 (perhaps.) I imagine that they went with the CR2450 more because that cpu, which may have only been drawing power at each interrupt from the balls moving or the button being pressed is most likely still drawing enough power that 2 years might drane a cr2032, even if it was sitting on a shelf.

Possible; no need for anything more expensive there... and I'm still surprised about the use of an electromechanical sensor rather than two electrodes going into water. That would be far simpler and cheaper.

I'm surprised it's a 16 pin chip. An 8 pin microprocessor would be sufficient. Also surprising is that it has more than 3 capacitors. I guess that the tilt switch is the most expensive component, then the battery. Probably the housings cost as much as the electronics.

@@KeritechElectronics I wouldn't be surprised if the issue was the prospect of some sort of deionized water being run through the filter not triggering contacts, or the other possibility that some material being filtered would lead to a corrosion situation for the wires, and that might lead to water infiltrating the capsule.. My thought was why are they not using a MEMS accelerometer to detect the lid flipping that would put only as much added depth to the board as the microprocessor they have used, and they only need to get the information off of one of the axis, They might bie I2C chips though, and I seem to recall that Great Scott had some issues with that on some of the very low cost uProcessors he was testing. Something about not having the built in support for that.

I highly recommend a competing product called ZeroWater. It comes with a meter that measures PPM of solids in the water. When I measure what's coming out of my faucet it gives me 300 PPM. After it is filtered through the zero water filter in the pitcher, it measures zero PPM. Of course that number changes after several refills of the pitcher. But with a meter you can make a decision on when you want to change the filter. they recommend 007 PPM. however I don't usually catch it until it's about 40 or 50 I can taste the water changing.

Sintered? Sintering is heating a powder and turning it into a solid. The tabs are most definitely soldered to the PCB, and spot welded to the battery (not sintered)

This is a product I bought (In black maybe?) around the year 2019. I was wondering the exact thing. Is this a "dummy" device, sort of like a sizable portion of cross walk buttons. Or is this designed to look functional AND actually is counting down the uses of the filter? I felt there was a design flaw either way... where if you poured the last of the water out of the jug, the flap would move on its own by gravity. Also, I'd have the tendency to want to put water in before the jug was entirely empty. So the count at least for my use didn't seem like it was going to be accurate at all.

I've got another type of those filters which has a liquid crystal display with a bar graph. With that one, I can definitively confirm it is nothing more than a timer. It's almost criminal in my opinion, it is a scam in every sense of the word.

Reminds me of the disposal temperature monitors I find at work occasionally...the plastic case is conveniently transparent, and it has the larger lithium battery with the yellow shrink tubing. They come in boxes that are used to ship transplant organs. Overbuilt, with a USB port....I haven't taken one apart just yet.. I wonder how long the battery in the counter will last? A decade or so? I've had Casio watches run a decade or slightly longer on the original battery...

They used to have fobs in the bottom of my Nike sneaks, for a thing called Nike Plus. That allowed the distance and steps I walked to be read by a phone app. I don't use that anymore, but I hope that was healthy. I think it can't have been too bad, because the fob was pretty small.

So neat. I wonder why there is two balls instead of 1. They could just say on the lid that it's counting to x, that's neat feature for the consumer that wants best filter quality i guess. I have the big Brita pitcher with the spout at the bottom and i change filter once the water doesn't taste as good 😅. They give you a cling film calendar to mark when you changed it. Their long life filters last me like a year.

I suspect that it's because it's a component that is mass produced for a variety of markets, and in some of those markets there may be arcing involved, so one ball or the other could get arc welded to the contacts, and having two balls allows related hardware to both continue working, and advise that there is a fault in the equipment that needs to be addressed.

You should contact/post photos of the board to BigClive, another KZbinr that reverse engineers such things and shows how they actually work. Often he can identify chipsets that are completely filed off based on the pin usage.

Gah! I'm not normally an eco-freaky dude but that's mega e-waste! (cool though.) I bought a water jug that takes Brita filters but has a mechanical mechanism that turns a dial pointer slowly each time you flip the lid up to refill, until the needle goes in the red after about a month. Brilliant! Never looked back.

The version of Brita pitcher I have has an optical sensor to count the number of times the lid is flipped open to fill the upper reservoir - or any other reason. It seems like a crude way of measuring the water going through the filter.

I have got one fairly new in the UK so may be a bit different I got tired of the think keeping on flashing as I tend not to change the filters as often as they say when my electric water heater starts to fur up with lime scale its time to put another filter in the simple way to stop it flashing is when i put a new filter in do not press the start button on it or should that be when I buy a new complete filter machine.
