Leaving our campground in Saint Brevin, we follow La Vélodyssée, or Eurovelo 1, cycling down the coast. We ride along the beautiful coast of the Bay of Biscay through such enchanted seaside towns as Pornic, La Bernerie en Retz, and La Barre De Monts, and also get our first ride through some of the salt marshes of this gorgeous area. What a beautiful addition to our bike tour of France!

When we ride our road bikes we are kitted out in the customary way. But on tour we've found the more causal, the better. Julianna found her dress to be comfortable, and I thought it was very lovely.

Bonjour ! Such a pleasure to visit France in your company. i.e. the camping and owners speaking french only, that’s a drawback of the beginning and end of the season, bilingual and trilingual, even, students and seasonal reception staff is gone at this time of the year. As are most of the international visitors.

Fair enough! But I cringed when I heard myself say that. The appropriate thing to say, of course, is "because we don't speak French". We really don't go anywhere thinking the locals should cater to us. Although it makes it harder, we enjoy those places where people don't speak English. we welcome the challenge and the opportunity to embrace the other culture.

Well, we all get a mix of headwinds and tailwinds, sun and rain. But when you get the good stuff, its important to be grateful, and when you get the crap, its important to remember that good times are just around the bend. But I love the blessing!

Once sunflowers have died back completely and the backs of the blooms are brown, it's time to harvest. Some of the trails look so questionable that I would be seriously wondering if I'd be left with nowhere to go. À bientôt, mes amis.

Modern farmers, whether they’re European or American farmers, spend a lot of time, alone, in their tractors and harvesters, just like us, they enjoy the occasional road side conversation. That’s how I learn about their trade. ;-)

I'm amazed by how much pleasure I'm getting from your ride although I've travelled your route many times. It's a day ride from where we live and out of season it's where we head for. Pornic is a delightful village and in summer many events are held in the harbour. The countryside is very flat so no hill climbing but Oh the wind! An hour or two pedalling into it is real hard work. I had a real chuckle when I saw the shot of the pedestrian bridge your route suggested you took. Years back I used google maps to plan my routes and it wanted to take me over that same bridge. Unlike you and being an old fool I did just that! I now go your way. It's nice to cycle along the sea but there is little memorable about the seaside towns along the way but the views out to the sea make up for it. The first time I rode past those wind generators was a big surprise, I never realised how big they are. Thanks for sharing your trip. PS Tell Julianna my wife likes the dress.😍

Great comment! One thing about riding somewhere so far away from home is you don't have folks who can talk about it with you, or have some sense of the experience. It's good to hear from someone who has been there! You live in a lovely part of the world. Oh, and Julianna says thank you!

Would love to tour the southwest of England. One of these days. So I have a question for you, Jay. I keep hearing how the British drivers are rude to cyclists. As someone who has recently ridden the JOGLE, did you find it stressful or relatively easy as far as the traffic-stress goes? Everywhere in Europe I've ridden I've found the drivers to be exceptionally respectful of cyclists. How about GB?
@Biking360
@Biking360 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBicycleTourists I would say that on the whole, they were really good and friendly. The best places were in Devon, Cornwall, Wales, the Noth of England, and Scotland. Still pretty good elsewhere though and I have no complaints. It is also worth noting that new traffic regulations mean that cars must give you a minimum of six feet when they overtake you or face very stiff fines and penalties if caught. It makes a difference and I noticed I got much more room than on previous trips.

Very good to know. I've been wanting to do the JOGLE for a long time now, or some route that combines many of the isle's many gems. Our bucket list is getting longer, not shorter!

Hello, Another wonderful video! I love the narrow streets. I remember walking them when I was in France...a nice place to ride a bike. An answer to a question about the sunflowers. In ND we grow them and they do not harvest them until Autumn when they are brown and dead looking. Lovely dress, and it looked great for riding a bike. Enjoying your journey, Carmen from Fargo

Hey there Carmen! Yes, we've since learned about the way sunflowers are harvested. Always something new to learn, love that! Julianna loves her dress. On road bikes, here in Denver, we wear the usual biking kits. But on tour, it's much more relaxed to wear something more "normal". Thanks for joining us on our ride!
