France has a long history of flirting with the far right.
In April 2022, Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, was President Emmanuel Macron’s closest challenger in the presidential election, gaining more than 40 percent of the vote.
Although she did not win, racist and Islamophobic ideas promoted by far-right parties now reverberate across French society.
In the third episode of a four-part series, The Big Picture: France in Focus takes a close look at what lies behind the far right’s appeal, and the effect on the people in its firing line.

Far-right in the modern context is primarily driven by a hostility towards immigration and immigrants. Something called nativism. The problem is because of the impact of urbanization on family dynamics people are having less kids. Since when doing subsistence agriculture kids we're free labor so everyone had as much as you could tolerate plus 1 in case a kid died. As humanity industrialized and urbanized, people moved off the large farms into small apartments. Because of that and the fact work was requiring more and more education, led to kids now being expensive choices. This today means that the highly urbanized Western world has a below replacement level birth rate. So immigration is necessary to preserve a healthy population pyramid. That is why nativism is self defeating and not viable in the western world.
