The province of Alsace stands like a flower-child referee between Germany and France. Join MNT favorite Steve Smith as he takes us on a drive up the Alsace's Route du Vin for miles of vineyards, half-timbered villages, and feudal fortresses. We then head to Verdun to walk the trenches of World War I before visiting Reims Cathedral to marvel at Gothic splendor and Chagall's stained glass. I once worked with a French woman who was born and raised in Strasbourg and then moved to culturally inept LA. I thought she was totally out of her mind. Love to travel back to Alsace. It has been too long. I had thought it would be a great place to retire.

Merci Steve! I’m a French descendant from a WW2 war bride. Trying to find/dig thru history to find more family records (in France)…any tips would be so very appreciated. My Grandmere has since passed & my French proficiency is limited. I very mych appreciated this episode as my Grandmere lived in Commercy, (Meuse dept), very near Strasbourg. Travel is the magic…

france is renowned for being awkward, and especially awkward for people who don't speak French, and even more particularly awkward for people emailing or telephoning. I'm sorry to say you will not get anywhere on your own. Your best bet is to hire a translator in france and go to a few maries officies in person, with as much proof of your decendence from that originally French person. If they're Alsatian, it will be even more awkward, so im sorry if that's the case. I'm French, but was born overseas, and this causes be grief every day when dealing with French administration
