That Trezeguet goal should be shown to any young striker. The technique alone needed to strike a half volley on the weaker foot with a ball slightly behind is hard enough, to generate that sort of power is frankly ridiculous. High level football.

I'm a Juve supporter and i admit that Del Piero with Italy had never been on top levels like with Juve, same for Totti, legend with Roma but not with Italy (only 9 goals in 58 caps). Tbh it's like we live in a time loop. By winning Euro 2000, Trezeguet denied Italy a 2nd Euro Cup title, and caused them heartbreak. Then, in 2006, it was Trezeguet himself who was denied a second World Cup title because he missed his penalty and caused heartache to the French. Then, in 2018, France managed to win their second title, erasing to some extent the memories of 2006. And in 2021, Italy did the same, by winning Euro 2021 to erase the pain of Euro 2000.

Trezeguet's goal is one of my all time favourites. I love his confidence in that instead of trying to place it, he simply twats it for all he's worth. Marvellous.

It was the true style of 1990s strikers especially those who played in Serie A. Batistuta, Vieri, Trezeguet etc. they did not try any fancy stuff with the ball, just struck it first time. These days very few strikers can do that. Cavani probably the one that does it best.

Baggio scoring that penalty wouldn't have won them the game though. In fact, Baggio scoring may not have made a difference if Brazil had scored the next penalty because Italy already missed 2 while Brazil only missed 1. This is worse because italy were ready to celebrate only for Wiltord to break their hearts. The Baggio penalty miss is vastly overrated. The 2 takers who missed before Baggio deserves far more blame

This euro was really amazing for us italians, we started with a lot of critics after the qualifier matches. We played so good at this euro and we were 1-0 at the 93th minute, France had only one last chance and they made a goal with that, and in the end trezeguet makes France win the euros. At least we had our revenge in 2006, but this was really heartbreaking for us italians, from the critics to play a wonderful game and at the very end, the final hit on us.

Your right, I grew up watching golden goal and silver goal. They both are the worst things ever, especially for opposing team if they concede. Glad it's been scratched and no one ever has to hear of it again.

I prefer golden goal than penalties at the end... Golden goal means that teams have to play to win it, the goal is dine IN the match... it will mean that the team we want the most to win, which show the most attacking football have more chance to win, the game is then overall better and more entertaining... Penalties on the other hand, the team which has played most of all the game in defense can win it without deserving it... and I have numerous example of team undeserving to win a match : France-Germany semi in 1982 is surely the worst example in mind : the german Butchers won against the football and entertaining artists (german agression all the match, a french guy hospitalised with severe commotion etc... a scandale)

Yes. France beat Italy in WC 98 and Euro 2000 and then Italy beat France in WC 06 and Euro 08. And they both beat each other in the final of a major tournament. Italy was the greatest rival of France in those years. They didn't meet in an official game since Euro 2008... let's hope they will meet each other in the Euro or the Nations league this year.

@@gontrandjojo9747 Italy always had the upper hand until 1986 when Platini's France beat Italy 2-0 in R16 then again France beat them in 1998 and 2000 though Italy clearly played better than France in 2000 final but after that Italy won in 2006 and 2008 ... Now Italy's main rival is Spain on last 12 yrs they have met 4 times in row on last 4 euros with both winning 2 each but Spain still haven't beaten Italy in a WC match...

As luck wud have it.. 6 yrs later, it was the same Trezeguet who missd the penalty against Italy in WC finals, during the shootout... the only french player who couldn't score in that shootout... The game and life itself, is a grt leveller indeed...

Hmm i agree, But I use to love this France team, so much energy they had and so many great footballers, Zidane, Henry, Deschamps , Pires wow!!!! although we have good France team now with Greizmann, Pogba, Matuidi but this was the ultimate French team moreover seeing this team makes me remember my chilhood days when I had started hooking to the television for football

in 2006, we lost the final when Zidane (provoked) has been rightly red carded... when he received his red card, France was outrageously dominating in the extra time, there were 3 or 4 following "affairs" in the reparation area where french had true chance to put goals... the minutes for Italy were so "looooooong". I am pretty sure france would have put a second goal in extra-time as Italy seemt so dominated during those long minutes of the 2X15'... Penalties at the end are ALWAYS a lottery, and often, the team which wins isn't the one who deserves it. Golden goal far better.
