I don't think so. They don't look sharp at all. Their first touches were terrible - what was their pass completion percentage - and they were often passing to nobody except the opposition. AND BTW when was the last time Buchanan even threaten the opposition's goal? 2 years?

No.. even worse A) France is stronger than Netherlands B) A new coach coming in would have needed a good 10 day camp minimum - got effectively 3 before the Netherlands game. Maybe by Argentina, they will be ready to play as a team under this coach. Maybe. Just don't expect miracles

I really do think it could go either way. Not that they'll fair any better in the end, but I think it's really possible they show up looking really sharp. Though, could also show up extremely timid. But holy hell - do we think David is a great finisher with his head? Are we expecting to whip balls in from the side for him to finish? He wants the ball at his feet. How can we not form up with a player to provide him service at his feet? The 4-2-2-2 doesn't seem to suite him at all. We can't afford for Kone or Eustaquio to have to push way forward to do so.

I honestly, don’t understand why people think we ran out of gas in the second half. Clearly, it was more Netherlands making adjustments to beat the press. For one, the dynamics of the game changed right at the start of the second half when our players should be still fresh from the break .

they adjusted and our press fell on its face. yoy saw how exposed our midfield is when everyone is so high up the pitch. On top of that, the high line was suicide. the press has to start from deeper if anything.

I think the only good thing about the first half was that the score was 0-0. It could have easily been 2-0 Holland

No, come on. I just rewatched the game. The first half was quite close. Yes, Canada is going all out where the Dutch aren't quite (and with their B squad), but the boys looked good in that first half.

I would be very surprised if we see the same 4-2-2-2. There's more value in getting a look at another formation, whether that's a 4-1-4-1, where Kone and Osorio start as 8's, or a 4-2-3-1 where someone slots in as a 10. I doubt that Marsch is commited to a 4-2-2-2, since he's said it's not about formations but about roles. It just makes sense that he'll use the opportunity to look at a slightly different formation that utilizes different roles.

YES do that starting 11. YES put Davies more up front where the speed can be used to "score" set up scoring chances"----Miller is fast also and can get back.---and yes Crepeau in NET !! both should get a game to show their stuff--No idea who to sub in and when just do it right

I've never seen Ugbo do anything with the National Team. Go with 4-2-3-1 and instead of Ugbo bring in Oso or Hoilett to play a 10. Miller at LB seems like a good move. BTW David had ONE good opportunity and his final touch looked amateurish. These guys have to start playing to their capability... I would expect to see Hiebert and Laryea subbed in to the back line in the 2nd half, and Choineire also in the 2nd half.

For the back line - I strongly agree that Davies should start further up the pitch, but still with instructions to be aggressive defensively (using his speed to track back rather than 1v1 defensively). I also agree Kamal should slot in the back, giving Hiebert a look later in the match. I've obviously been critical of the central CB positions, but it has to be said that Derek and Moise were really solid. They need to start again there, for sure, and let's hope they stay as strong. Gotta get a look at Laryea on the right, whether that's starting or sub'ing in. We'll absolutely need him against Chile and Peru so he's gotta get minutes.

Once again, St Clair did not mess up twice in that 2nd half, as you keep saying. On the header, even one of the commentators said that he didn't have a chance on it. The issue was the coverage on that play. On the one possible goal that you might fault him, the ball hit a defender's foot & if you have ever been a goalkeeper in soccer, or hockey, you would know that changes the projectary & makes it very difficult to stop. St.Clair was excellent in that match!!! Having said that, I'm pretty sure that Jesse planned all along to go with Max Crépeau in the match against France Buchanan was the most disappointing for me. He disappeared.

He was terrible! Culpable for both goals and is not a reassuring presence behind the line. Has to be Crepeau. Easy choice.

I want to see a 4-2-3-1 with Miller, Cornelius, bombito, Johnston, Eustaquio, Choiniere, kone, Davies, and Buchanan, David. I feel like whenever we have two strikers one of them kinda becomes a ten and does more defense and it's always David so he's never up for a chance to score like in this recent game. I don't like the 4-4-2 because I don't think it works against teams like this but I understand why Marsch uses it and also Choiniere might not be at this level as others are saying.

I very much agree. There's no reason to expect Ugbo to do anything more than Larin up front if the ball never gets there. And how does it make any sense for our best (world class!) striker to be sitting back as a 10? Get him up top and decide who the best option is to provide him short service. For me, that's Hoilett for 45 and Osorio for the other 45. Choiniere will look particularly bad at this level is my estimation.

Expectations NEED to be tempered. No way we're legitimately competing against teams like Netherlands, France and Argentina. These are great learning experiences and will be useful for our program as a whole to gain a better understanding of where we'd like to be as a program in the future. Please don't give fans hope that we'll be able to "bounce back" against France. Where are our weaknesses, who fits the best where, what are our most effective formations and who rises to the occasion? These are some questions we're trying to answer. Expecting to be at even close to the same level as any top 10 team is just asking for disappointment. It's delusional at this point.

It was less a tail of two halves more like we had 20 minutes of good play until the Netherlands completely figured us out. We got very very lucky to not concede before half.

France is an other level compared to the netherlands anyways i think that jessy is a great motivator not a coach i've followed him when he was at leeds utd and despite the poor performances he kept positive in post match reactions till he got sacked while not changing tactics i think he will do the same with canada . i have no faith in him

Super disappointed to see the exact same starting squad and formation (save keeper). Just can't understand how/why we're going to continue to see David dropping away from goal. But let's go, boys! Let's see an early goal!

I disagree with you quite a bit. You gave too much blame to St Clair and hardly anything to Davies who was horrible. If you were paying attention, Bayern coach lost faith in Davies at end of season because of lacklustre defending. Agree to giving Crepeau next start as goalie position is not set. Agree to Miller in, but he is not fast as you claim but he does play with intensity defensively which is something that Davies does not offer anymore. And yes to Davies Left Mid. Stop overrating Choinierre and Piette, they were crap when they came on. We need to give our other strikers minutes, I would start Bair and Ugbo with David first off the bench. I am very curious to see Tani play for Canada and would love to see him get 10 minutes at end of game. Insane to do high press all game. The high press should be selective, like start of game to try and nick an early goal because soccer stats clearly show first goal wins!

I'm not convinced the boys gassed out in the 2nd half. I think it's more likely that they were just very aware that Netherlands could work themselves out of the press with ease. Players don't want to put themselves in a position to look terrible, so they pull back from the press. This is the biggest challenge Jesse faces. I don't think we really saw Jesse's program much at all. The one difference was that the squad was more defensively aware - that's it. Otherwise, that was a pretty typical press we've seen from Canada before.

Johnston may not be able to play with the pace of France. He may need to be bench too. We are playing France. France isn't playing us. They are better and we must play against there style. Not our own. Johnston will playing mbappe can he even have the pace to stay near him. So get someone out there that has pace. Or it will be 8 to 0 in 10 minutes.
