Rwanda was the first African country to send troops to support the Mozambican army in fighting jihadists in the northern Cabo Delgado region. Since 2017, Al Shabaab fighters linked to the Islamic State group have killed thousands of civilians and displaced hundreds of thousands more. Our correspondent Simon Wohlfahrt went on patrol with Rwandan troops.

It does not surprise me that Rwanda is leading the way. They have learned from horrible bitter experience, the tragedy of genocide. As an American who served in the U.S. Army, it is very inspiring to me to see how professional these Rwandan soldiers are. Clearly they are getting excellent training and have very good leaders and good morale. As they see so much respect towards them from around the world, I hope that other Africans will follow their example and learn to work together in a unified manner to fight extremism, corruption, and poverty. Africans I hope will eventually teach the Western world how to be civilized and how to develop sustainable economic policies that protect their environments. I think we are seeing the beginnings of this. These Rwandan soldiers should hold their heads up high and be proud of themselves.

They may be "well-equipped" in comparison to a "normal" Central-African country, but that's not saying much... They'll only stop a glancing blow from a rifle round. Even if they are expensive (which they are, but not in comparison to everything else they have), that's like buying a really fancy cake and only commenting on the frosting lol.

@@odakyuodakyu6650 Since the genocide it has always been a dictatorship and to be honest it has flourished under it. I was there in Cabo Delgado between May and August 2021. The Rwandan forces are well trained, Disciplined and very Professional. There equipment and weapons are new and looked after. As soon as they arrived on tasking, they went out on patrols. Now the Mozambique Military, that is a different story, no respect for the uniform that they wear, weapons and equipment in very very poor condition, I saw an AK 47 stamped with the date 1974 manufacture and rusted, and this was not an insurgents weapon but a Marines issued weapon. There heavy machine guns also in very poor condition, rust and lack of maintenance. Rumour had it that some of the Mozambique Military had gone over too the insurgents, not because of religion, but due to corruption from within the Mozambique government. Soldiers not being paid etc, poor kit and living conditions. The banks and businesses were also looted by the Military. So for the people in this Region they find it very difficult to trust anyone in Uniform, ESPECIALLY THEIR OWN MILITARY. Well done to the Rwandan Military for showing Professionalism and hoping you all get to go home soon.

Similar effects can be seen in the DRC with South Africa, Russia, China, etc. becoming more involved with training government troops.
