Spain’s Canary Islands overwhelmed by migrant arrivals • FRANCE 24 English

Located off Morocco, Spain's Canary Islands are facing their worst migrant crisis since 2006. In just one year, 30,000 migrants have arrived on the archipelago. The smallest island, El Hierro, saw 4,000 arrive in January alone. Despite locals and NGOs coming together to help out, El Hierro is overwhelmed. Watched a separate documentary about senegalese migrants recently- telling them about the troubles at sea is not a deterrent as they still believe the grass is greener. Also, destroying the boats is pointless as passage via boats especially fishing boats is abundant there. Creating an environment that promises immediate return/removal would be more effective.

Immigrants in Spain are immediately attended by doctors and in hospitals. Spanish have to wait up to 10 months for an appointment with their doctor. Another so many months to see a specialist, another so many months for a scan, and easily 2 years for an operation. But not so for immigrants.
