Makes sense. We in the US don't mind how many Europeans come here, because our cultural roots are European. (Native Americans aside.) But when millions of non-English speaking people flow into border regions, it creates a lot of discord. Legal immigration can be set at reasonable levels for assimilation, but illegals can overwhelm a community.

it's funny how different things are felt depending where you are: if you told me Spain is going to grant citizenship to 300,000 Venezuelans that fled their country towards other South American nations (like mine, Chile), we would be happy, lol, because we have received way too many, more than what we can assimilate. Sometimes it's not just cultural differences that create an anti-migrant view, but the sheer number. And I would argue that there are cultural differences even between Hispanic nations; believe me that crime behaves very different depending from which country it comes from.

You forget a very important reason for the Spanish acceptance of migration. A very important group of migrants is constituted by Latin Anerican: same language, same religion and similar culture. Another important group are Romanian who also speak a Latin language and are able to learn Spanish in 3-4 months. Besides, they are EU citizens. These two nationalities form the majority of inmigrants and they integrate quite easily.

Here in Spain any south american immigrant, at least in my expirience, will be the chillest, nicest and most hard working person you know. You are missing out on a crucial reason why Spaniards are more friendly to immigration: a huge percentage of immigrants are South American and as such integrate very easily in Spain, causing less social friction than more culturally different migrants.

Spain mainly receives immigrants from three regions of the world: 1. Europe 2. Latin America 3. North Africa. Europe and Latin America are very well integrated into Spanish society, however, there are greater frictions with North Africa. Immigrants from Asia are very small in number so they do not have a great impact. What is increasing is immigration from Sub-Saharan Africa, although it is still small compared to the first three.

I've lived in Spain and am from Australia (of Spanish and Peruvian parents). The reason why Spain is migrant friendly is because the migrants (the largest proportion being from Latin America) generally integrate really well due to a cultural interchange that has occurred over centuries. Firstly I do understand latino's are different however after travelling across latin america these countries are quite similar with similar tastes and some regional variances. Latino's speak Spanish, Spanish people listen to music from Latin America and vice versa, and Latinos and Spaniards share love of family and friends and going out. I realised what a cohesive factor this shared cultural memory is between Latinos and Spaniards when I came back to Australia and saw how differently Australians and immigrants (and immigrants themselves) interact due to the many different countries and cultures Australia pulls from. immigrants in Australia really have very little to do with each other (at least the 1st generation, the kids however will have friends from different cultural backgrounds). For example my Spanish father and Peruvian mother's friends were generally either Spanish or Latinos (again, shared cultural memory), very few of any other culture. However, my sister and I have friends that cross all cultural backgrounds (from Europe, UK, latin america, the Middle East, SE Asia, etc etc).

I have been subscribed to this chanell for some time now (I´m Spanish from Galicia) and I would like to say this video is not a good explanation on "Why" the U-Turning is happening, and actually is missleading since it leaves out major factors, namely: 1. Most of Inmigrants in Spain are coming from Central and South America and from the rest of Europe. (INE Data) 2. The origin of the "classical" american (the continent) inmigration makes integration easy due to speaking the same language and share many common culture aspects. Many of these people are actually the sons or gradsons of Spanish people who emigrated to America (the continent) decades ago. Also worth noting that under Spanish law, people coming from south american countries and other places formerly within the Spanish Empire (eg. Philippines), have an special and faster system for residency. 3. The U-Turning is happening because the rise on illegal inmigration coming from Africa. (Vox focus on this aspect, actually calling americans "our latin american brothers". So you can see where the issue lays for them. When people see the news on problems with inmigration they do not tend to think on Venezuelans, Argentinians, etc but in inmigration coming from the Magreb and Sahel regions. With all due respect, not mentioning this in the video talks about poor research, and is not providing the whole picture in an accurate way. I hope this post helps to anyone curious about this topic. English is not my mother tongue, so forget any mistakes on the writting. Best,

There are a couple reasons additionally to the migration-friendly attitude in Spain: - The historical migration used to be from Latin American countries, which made those people relatively easier to absorb due to the historical ties due to former colonisation. - Also, because of the Franco Regime and post-Civil War retaliations against left-leaning citizens, many of those ended up migrating to Latin America. And in the early Democracy steps (80's), many others went to Europe to find a job. Both reasons make it to understand people's need of migrating. If anything, the Latin American origin being displaced by African people is what is making people that were less accepting of immigration start airing their grievances and rejection.

Focusing on immigration in general is obtuse. There are different kind of immigrants, whose impact in the societies they move to is widely different. Be it right or wrong, most Spaniards (but the same goes for other Europeans) are generally fine with migrants whose background indicate a strong propensity to integration within their way of life - that is, other Europeans, Southern Americans, other westerners. They are way less welcoming when it comes to Africans and, especially, Muslims. The greatest influx of migrants to Spain were from Latin America, hence the general positive vibe towards it.

You misunderstand capitalism and the welfare state. The government does not import poor migrants, they come willingly and the governnent allows many to stay. They look for a job, and they find the jobs the business owners want to give them. If anything, the government probably offers these migrants too much aid. As for welfare state, you must know that your future pensions and government spenditure in health, education and everything else depend on a steady population working and paying taxes, but the spanish birth rate is barely 1.2, not enough to keep the population steady. What will do the trick? Allowing migrants to cone in. Orban's Hungary nativist policies clearly show that incentives to young families don't really work (not well enough), and the truth of the matter is that modern capitalist society does not encourage people to have children, and until the robots do all the hard work, we need to find ways to keep our population stable.

Even if you are born there you will never be allowed to be a citizen as well as if you are not from G7 countries, you need an Arab who is in the position of a slave owner, you will be working under his supervision, he will have a cut of your income. So, let's address the elephant in the room: This piece talks about "migration", but fails to explain that the "historical positive attitude towards migration" is because mainly, that migration was Latin American migration: similar customs, same language, same (or mostly same) religion. Yet this piece, being politically correct, fails to point out that Spaniards are fed up and pissed up with muslim and sub-saharan migrants that historically and culturally don't have any connection with Spain. Latin American migration, despite its flaws, have always been welcomed. Muslim and Sub-saharan migration is the one that is causing irreversible damage to the great Spanish nation. And stop labeling everything that goes against an open attitude "Far Right". God damn it! Now everything is far right. For once, people want to have their own opinion without concern about appeasing to a homogenous way of thinking. Each of us have the right to have our own opinions, and if we don't want to agree to social changes that degrade our lives, then you must respect it, in the same way that we respect your damn right to bray "Too Long, Didn't Read" ideas.

The reason why I think that anti-immigration sentiment is growing in Catalonia is mainly due to the fear of Catalan citizens and pro-independence people that through large influxes of immigration the Catalan identity can be diluted, an identity that is in a very critical moment due to the arrival of so many people from other parts of Spain and places in Latin America. People who generally don't bother to integrate into Catalan culture or to learn the Catalan language because they are not aware of or do not want to be aware of the difference between Catalonia and Spain in terms of culture/history/linguistics/identity. This, together with the frustration after the declaration of independence in 2017, can help to understand the irruption and sudden growth of the more far-right Catalan Alliance party. (With this, I hope to be able to provide some context on the change in the immigrant sentiment in Catalonia.)

They can apply for citizenship even before they can get their residency papers (2 years waiting period). Then they can roam around the EU and apply for work in it using their new Spanish citizenship, that makes Spain look awful. Soon, Spain will not be able to cope with the numbers, regardless of specific source and background of migrants. Furthermore, handing citizenship to children of Spaniards who live abroad, regardless of the length of time the parent/s have lived in Spain is creating troubles. Now multiple generations can live e abroad and claim citizenship. Last year 75% of new citizenship was handed to people who live abroad.

Tons of people are anti inmigration nowadays in spain, due to both real issues and fake ones pushed by russian trolls and far right. Its undeniable that inmigration needs more controls and there are some problems with it, specially the part where if you give birth here the kid becomes spaniard, thousands of adults entering the country by posing as minors and a lot of minors arriving to airport and being left there to be taken by the spanish state. But each time there is any violence you can see how most comments are asking if the guy was non white or if he was a "non ham eater", and even when its not they try to push the fake agenda, with tons of fake news of murders rpes and similar Gangs are also on the rise and a lot of people say that that is because of inmigration, when most of said gang members are spanish for generations. Also there is something called MENA, with means minors that arrive without a guardian, they get sent usually to some centers that are almost a youth detention center, with really bad controls leading to abuses and the minors comiting crimes. This issues be it true, fake, or mixed has made that a lot of people see inmigration as a big problem, and its behind pedro sanchez turn.

The biggest reason why Spaniards are proimmigrant: Most non Europeans are from Latin America. In Spain the three main types of immigrants are: 1. Europeans, 2. Latin Americans, 3. North Africans. There is not much immigration from Asia and although immigration from SubSaharan Africa is increasing, it is still small compared to the first three. Anyone who knows about Spanish and Latin American culture knows that they are highly compatible. Of course there are some problems, but nothing comparable with immigrants from North Africa.

It is also happening in countries like Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Colombia with immigration. The same thing happened in the United States and their people do not care about the problems of Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela and Latin American countries, both Democrats and Republicans do not care about having immigration reform and the problem is that immigration is such a big problem for the United States that Americans unfortunately support a mass deportation of immigrants from all over the world including black, Asian, indigenous, white and Hispanic Americans. They support that policy, unfortunately we do not have money to support immigrants coming to the country we cannot even take care of Americans living in poverty, inequality, crime, racism, problems with the criminal justice system and the health system. The same thing happens with American territories seen as second class citizens. And also it is not only Haitians and Central Americans but also Cubans and Venezuelans who have a political, social and economic crisis that is happening there in those countries. But do not emigrate to Chile or the United States, Brazil, Canada, Peru and Mexico, those countries have many problems migrating to countries like Uruguay, Paraguay, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Suriname, Costa Rica and Panama. There is now a program so that migrants, when they show up at the border between the United States and Mexico, can apply or can be taken to go to Spain, Italy and Canada between those governments. In the future, if Cuba, Bolivia, Honduras, Peru, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela fall into chaos, unrest, civil war or collapse, many refugees will migrate to Jamaica and other countries in the Caribbean and Latin America and the migration crisis will be worse than the other waves of Cubans in the region. And, the entire world. Immigration is always being used as a weapon. And Bolivians, Hondurans, Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Haitians and Peruvians will also have to migrate to places like the Dominican Republic, Belize and other places in Latin America and the Caribbean or European countries if the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Brazil close their doors to immigration from the region in the future.

Spain is having a similar problem to Canada. An immigration friendly nation that has seen rapid growth in migration levels lead to diminishing enthusiasm for what has been virtually unrestricted immigration levels. It doesn't mean a permanent shift. More of a shift to more reasonable levels seen in the early part of the century.

In Canada, the majority of immigrants are Indians and Chinese, both of whom have very different cultures than Canadians.

We will have the same culture soon in 20-30 years, unless we get most migrants out of the EU. But unlike americans, the average good EU citizen wont have a chance to defend himself.

Swiss style migration is the best solution. Regulated migration based on the needs of a country, with a commitment of x years prior granting nationality. It isn't difficult to put together, I don't understand why they make it so bloody difficult.
