Take it to a shop and have it rebuilt I have never brought a new starter generator or alternator in the last 45 years I always get them rebuilt

You could try this starter from John Deer part Fgv35532054. The dimensions with regards to flange diameter, Drive dist., tooth count and distance between mounting holes matches. The starter fits John Deer 76F, 85F and 100F. All are Italian build Goldoni tractors that were imported to the US and painted green.

Puill the plastic cap off the solenoid, and turn the disk over, and the contacts around. An easy rebuild. It is pulling in but the contactor in the solenoid is arc burned. Repair the grill by putting a piece of metal like a very thin piece of say disposable turkey cooking pan, put it in place and form like you want it usind duct tape. put a release agent on it then pour resin into it to form a gel coat. Let that set then apply a layer of fiberglass cloth maybe 2 that extend out over the edges of the hood. Sand and prime with filler primer, then paint the grill. Maybe your starter shop can put the armature on a growler and clean the commutator and stop the shorted coil. Another possibility would be to adapt another starter assembly to the mounting base that uses a simple inertial engaged drive gear.

Ross by now you may figured out thing on your starter. I would have your armature checked and the fields to see if it not grounding out. Or have a wire broken. Most time the trouble start with one or the other. Thx

Find a used starter off a Long that was built by Fiat . They were about half price of an Agco/Oliver starter.

Mahle Makes a bunch of replacement starters for Magneti Marelli starters . Most of them are an ISO format if you have the dimensions you can find something that will work as long as the tooth count on the Bendix is correct and the rotation is correct and the bolt spread is the same . SEE

I'm going to commiserating with you for a second. I had a claas large square baler that had some bolts come loose for the recharge chamber ans it decided to eat it's self so I priced the parts and it was going to be 10k on a 13k baler so I said you know what I think we can make all this stuff so between myself and a welding/machine shop and we hand made the parts for 2k and they apologized that the bill was so large. I gave the owner a box of beer as a thank you because it was so cheap. Keep up the videos!

I feel your frustration Ross. There is a very good starter and alternator rebuilding shop near me that rebuilt my French starter on my old BMW motorcycle for far less than a new one was going to cost me. I wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't convert a 24 volt to a 12 volt either. If you want to contact me I'd sure give you their information. In retrospect, I worked in parts for a John Deere dealer in the early 80's and the Nippendenzo starter for a 5020 was over 900.00. Sadness has been around forever

Really thought my JD40 starter was shot, but took it to a generator/starter shop and they turned it around in a couple hours.

There is a really good starter/alternator/generator shop not too far from me in west central Indiana. They can do it all, even rewinding. I would have it rebuilt. If the first place tells you they can’t fix it, check somewhere else. You may have to drive a few miles but I would exhaust all those possibilities before I would spend that much for a starter.

I was hoping he would take the generator to a shop like this and have it rebuilt as a 12v version and skip the add on alternator. I get that you’re busy Ross, but for what you’ll spend on a new starter you should be able to have both done at a shop.
