This talk made me think of two quotes. About attending College for "girls and cars" George Bernard Shaw's saying "Youth is wasted on the young." Another thought came to me regarding Coppola's wise comment to make it personal. George Gershwin, having already achieved some success, sought out the French composer Ravel to study with him. Ravel refused, telling Gershwin "Why would you want to be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first rate Gershwin?"

Has Coppola watched Fabelmans, it is probably as personal as you can get. Jim Jarmusch is good but the guy lifts so much from New Wave and classic Japanese movies. Linklater is a great example in that regard.

He meant in terms of his blockbusters such as Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Like he pointed out there's an exception with the director of Black Panther whose done both. Steven Spielberg is no different but most of his films are extremely commercial and designed for a mass audience. The director that probably embodies personal and commercial together in one is George Lucas. His six Star Wars films are extremely personal and tell the story of his life if you know where to look. His other works as well. From Indiana Jones (particularly Temple of Doom and Young Indy) to American Graffiti are always personal. Mass cinema today though tends to be more run by studios and takes the auteur out of the picture. So it's vastly different than back when New Hollywood was coming along and the more art house filmmakers that Francis talked about as well were making their pictures. Jim Jarmusch also makes very personal films influenced by the New Wave and Japanese cinema. Part of what makes an auteur who they are is being able to draw from what has inspired you and making it your own while respecting what was done before you. It creates a new and original piece of art.
