The Godfather producers were a bunch of assholes. They were against casting Brando and Pacino. They were against Nino Rota's score. They were against Gordon Willis' dark photography. They tried to have Coppola fired several times. If The Godfather is one of the best movies ever made, it is in spite of its producers, not thanks to them.

Many times the actors who played the most brilliantly in their roles and even won awards were not the first or even second choices of the producers/directors. People reject a movie offer so they have to move on. This happens often I have found and the one they get eventually down the line is perfect. Cannot imagine this movie without the perfect Al Pacino. He made those films..Another, Fred MAcMurray in Double indemnity and the Apartment. He was great in both and was not their first choice in either.

Elizabeth F Nah, if you've followed Eastwood off the screen for over 40+ years as I have, you'd recognize that it's just his personality. He doesn't mince words, suffer fools gladly or bend to the will of others if he doesn't want to do something. Here he was likely pissed at having to maneuver the stupid death trap of lighting lamps and cords. I'm betting that the sound that made Hudson turn around was Eastwood tripping over the oh so chic artful background "scenery". Even if he didn't trip over it I'd be pissed at having to find my way through it.

You know, Marlon Brando was right not to accept the Oscar, because of the way Hollywood portrayed Native Americans. The night the Oscar aired, Native American men, women and children were fighting for their lives at the Oglala Nation, where the FBI and their goons illegally attacked them. The FBI had no legal business trespassing on Indian Country. So fuck all you white people that criticize Marlon Brando for speaking the truth

See THE OFFER on Paramount +, will explain the making of The Godfather, Ruddy was one of the good guys, it was the guys he thanked that were the assholes. But Ruddy was an asshole for not thanking BOTH FRANCIS FOR COPPOLA AND MARIO PUZO, as well as the actors.

I guess this was a surprise win? Cabaret won 8 Oscars that night and The Godfather won 2, before Eastwood announced the winner. And back in those days, when your movie won most of the awards, it meant your movie gonna get the big one as well. Well, most of the time.

Longtime pundits and historians of the day felt the two pictures were separated by just a few votes. Hedda Hopper, a still, at the time, powerful columnist for The Los Angeles Times, said as much.

Fun fact 1: Ruddy's win for The Godfather was the last time that a single person won the Best Picture Oscar as a producer, every year since it's been a team of people because it's like doing 4-5 jobs at once, from pre-production planning through to marketing and distribution. Fun fact 2: Ruddy's Canadian.

Good Evening, I have seen Godfather( the movie) when I used to study in school ( 1979-80) I suppose in Kolkata. I liked the character of Michael Corleone so much ,that I purchased Godfather ( the book ),I have read Godfather nearly 30-40 times & seen the movie the same number of times, every time I see or read ,I like the story a shade better. Thanks to Mr Mario Pujo for detailing each and every character of the story so meticulously & of course thanks to the super acting by all actors, specially Mr Marlon Brando as Godfather & Mr Al Pacino as Michael Corleone.

It's always nice to see clips from ancient history, when films didn't have 27 producers. Mr. Ruddy's thank-you list was, as others have pointed out, centered on those who provided the money. Though he mentions audiences, he doesn't recognize that no one goes to the movies to see a pile of $100 bills that reaches to the moon, necessary though they may be, but to admire and be entertained by the efforts of the creative artists.
