Hell pretty much all of his films from the 70s are best film of all time worthy...the conversation, gf1, gf2, and apocalypse now. The man is probably the most important director of the past 50 years.

One of the best runs by a director ever, if not the best. 2 movies that could easily be argued as the best movies ever (Godfather Part 1 and 2), another movie that’s among the best, and probably the best in it’s genre (Apocalypse Now), and also another fantastic movie (The Conversation), all within the space of 7 years.

Godfather part 2 was a gigantic film. locations around the world and the cast, flashbacks with the old scenery and a great movie. Very complex. Directing that masterpiece was amazing. An easy directing Oscar imo.

I am completely in agreement, the flashback of Don Vito's youth is wonderful (even on the book), among other things interpreted by some of the best Italian actors (Leopoldo Trieste: Mr. Roberto, Gastone Moschin: Don Fanucci).

I don't agree. It wasn't as amazing and great as the first two, but I enjoyed it. It had it's moments. Francis set his own bar, too high, but the third one didn't 'blow' it. Pacino was still awesome. Andy Garcia was impressive. Etc...

He was amazing, as was Gena Rowlands, his wife and the film dazzles. Actually, that's an impressive group of directors there. I've seen all of those films, and they're timeless gems! I pick Coppola, as well, but man, the others are awesome, too. I think Francis should've won for Apocalypse, Now, too.

Here's a bit of trivia, when Paramount proposed "Godfather 2" Coppola said he would produce it but not direct it, he suggested Martin Scorsese should direct it. Imagine how different that film would've been! And he forgot to thank the other big shot at Paramount back then, Robert Evans who green lit the Godfather films ever being made

This time he beat out Fosse (who definitely deserved it the first time around for Cabaret - as did Joel Grey, beating out a "mafia" of Godfather actors)...can you imagine if Fosse had won again against Coppola? Frank Sinatra was a guest host in 1975 along with Bob Hope which was the host of the oscars. I looked in imdb so I know it's true that he was the guest host. But I watched another oscar clip from 1975 when Bob hope started off the oscar with his monologue and they didn't say anything about Sinatra being the guest host. So I don't know they didn't mention that fact.

@@DeathCruzer That's an exaggeration and you know it. Yes, The Godfather it's pretty much untouchable and it is indeed a magnificent film, but not everything has to be compared to it. All of those films I mentioned 2 years ago are great cinematic accomplishments on their own. Some might be closer to perfect than others, but to even think that they are something resembling rubbish is a bit too much.
