The John Adams Institute, in collaboration with De Balie, once again hosted the renowned political scientist Francis Fukuyama to discuss his new book Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment, translated into Dutch as Identiteit and published by Atlas Contact.
In Identity, Fukuyama shows that populist nationalism is not motivated by economic concerns, but rather by the demand for recognition of one’s identity - and therefore cannot be satisfied simply by economic means. All over the world, identity politics based on religion, ethnicity and gender are on the rise. This has resulted in the upsurge of politicized Islam, of identity politics based on ethnic minorities and of anti-immigrant populism.
Twenty-six years after the publication of his ground-breaking book The End of History, Francis Fukuyama has changed his viewpoint that liberal democracies are the logical endpoint of history. In today’s world, the demand for identity cannot be transcended: we must begin to shape identity in a way that supports rather than undermines democracy.

We form opinions first, and then we use our rationality to justify those opinions.

Identity politics is basically the business of those excluding people from marriage, adoption, abortion or equal rights for just having another gender or sexuality than they have.

this is really crazy, he clearly doesn't have a grasp on what 'identity politics' means

Not surprised. This is the guy that thought history would stop progressing after liberal democracy. I don't know why they're hosting him or acting as though he has even an ounce of credibility.

@@gmkar7766 That clearly shows that you didn't really grasp what the book was all about, it's a bit more than that, although journalists made it easy for themelves to always repeat and repeat that it's only about that.

He smudges the raison d'être of "white" nationalism - then calls it a problem ! No-one with respect for OTHER cultures around the world, including himself, would deny their rights to preserve and continue their ancestral lineage - even if these cultures are connected in some form to global markets. Its not about being "better" than other groups, its about the right to maintain hegemony in your ancestral space without being consumed by immigration or gobal politics. As global politics reduces white majorities the liberal order will become tribal and inefficient to police. How can a state democratically enforce order and pacify a new white-minority multi-tribal society ? The liberal west will stagnate while Ethno-centric nations progress - including incidentally Mr Fukuyama's ancestral land.

Putting aside the problematic subtexts of your statements that seem to equate a perceived Japanese homogeneity as synonymous with 'white majorities', it sounds like you have no idea about the issues that Japan faces in the next 50 years in terms of its healthcare, agricultural and service industries. One of the world's oldest population with the lowest birth rate - what do you think is going to happen? Japanese politicians have danced around the need for migrant labor for years, but it is coming to a head quickly. In fact these migrant labor policies (highly exploitative I may add) have already begun to come into play. The number of Chinese, Tibetan, Nepalese, Vietnamese, etc. workers in Japan has increased greatly in recent years and will only continue as the demand rises. I suppose though, they should just leave they culture at the door, right?

The economic needs of a nation will not short circuit racial identity and divided loyalties. Its amazing how many academics and politicians don't get this. So you are right in that Liberal democracies will continue importing large diasporas into their countries until they and the natives are squeezed into fractious enclaves much like Israel & Palestine. The old Eastern European Bloc will probably look quite attractive at this point.
