the root of the feeling of separation is deeper than societal conditioning. Self preservation is an animal instinct common to most living organisms, from the unicellular ones to humans. Overriding it is almost impossible. i think that this is what non-duality tries to do and therefore very few succeed. In principle it is not that difficult to accept a reality in which the body-mind and the world are one within the universal consciousness- there's nothing but consciousness. That is when i have a full belly and no physical pain that requires attention to attend to the needs of the body-mind. But how can one accept non-separateness when the body-mind is assaulted by pain that always seem to be external [even when it comes from within]? There's always i at the receiving end of pain. Pain is the catalyst that precipitates consciousness into this separate body-mind-i. Pain converts non-duality into duality. Of course, in theory and retrospect, after the pain subsides, this can be reduced to the classical teaching that it is the mind that labels the sensation of pain as pain but in fact there's no pain that is felt but a manifestation of consciousness, and so fort... i could put it in a different way too- from the point of view of the vast universe in which i am but an indistinguishable speck of dust and in which even an atomic explosion wouldn't be distinguished, nothing happens- all comes down to a matter of scale. Anyone can enlighten me [without repeating the theory that i've just explained i am aware of]?

Well, I think the non-dial answer is that self-preservation, animal instinct and so on, are appearances within consciousness. They are known, but they do not know anything. So then the problem is that we identify with them as self and then suffer them, separation arising because we have projected a self which is at a distance from the true self. There may be objective pain and animal reactions in the body mind, but the corrosiveness of suffering is born from the separation, not the other way round.

+Tom Bayley after some investigation i can say that my 'objective' logic of 7 months ago has no correspondence in reality. Self preservation is a concept of the mind, same as pain [hypnotism takes away pain by mesmerizing the mind] ; well, everything that can be named is mind made stuff. Pain is simultaneously associated with its substrate where it appears, i.e. it needs a body to be localized and named. If the mind label is removed then pain is just another 'thing that is', no different than no pain or pleasure. And further, if we question 'to whom it comes' and we find out that the 'me' is just a thought and that there's no body in reality, that sensation disappears together with its substrate. It can't be real as anything that comes and goes is not

daisilui it is true that that instinctual fear for survival is a mere apparition in consciousness. However, it can scare some when they come face to face with that fear of annihilation. Yet for the one who disregards it and passes beyond it, its a nothing.. that fear is the only thing that dies. So its pretty intersting. This at least is my experience.

michael mcclure i'd say fear is a reality for everyone who believes being a body, for everyone who desires anything [e.g. to be free of fear or pain]. Those are more then just 'some'. Disregarding fear while present can be called courage and that is a human trait [in some]. For the one anchored in the absolute reality of the Self fear does not exist [what is the Self to fear about when there's nothing besides the Self?!]. But that on is part of a select group of one in a billion, or so; the rest of us are under the laws of nature [i.e., animal instinct] and the only thing we can do is to persevere in unrealizing the unreal/realizing the truth.

.....it it's only ONE, the apparent body, the "lies," the confusion, the "surrender," "no supporting evidence," "you to do it on your own," "Francis Lucille," is ALL one giant rabbit hole made up of consciousness or the ONE. There are no others, nothing awakens, nothing is true, it's all ONE. And yet, all these gurus appear, "to know," and continue "the game" of hide and seek.....ALL is ONE, only ONE speaks and listens and tortures and makes problems and solves problems...
