I do feel bad for Jack, and I truly want to see him do great. But let's be real for a minute. In Franco's first race, he started p18 vs p9 of albon and they finished p12 and p9 respectively. In one race Franco showed he was close to Albon, and let me remid you that the kid didn't receive proper f1 training or practice. Jack on the other hand in his first race with a car that can match gasly, started p17 and p5 and they finished p16 and p7 (additionaly 3 drivers didn't finish so i could have been worse) Jack has trained a lot in sims and with older cars and his results were not good. Let's see what he can do in Australia and then we will talk

Everyone who has been watching F1 for more than at least 2 decades knows and recognize a great talent at his first GP. It takes a different kind of intuition, logic, and vision to understand that; aside from the obvious talent on the track. And for more than people try to trash Briatore for his past “deeds”; let’s remember for a second that he was the guy who “took” Michael Schumacher from Eddie Jordan after only seeing one race. So did with Alonso when he was in the struggling Minardi. Let’s remind the “experts” here that the guy something knows about this whole business…

Obviously I hope Doohan does well, but I have a bad feeling about it. Edit: I wanted to make it clear that I obviously hope Doohan does well and doesn't need to lose his seat.

Look, this is not about nationalities. If Jack's dropped, it would not be because he's an Aussie or because Colapinto is an Argentine. I'm really interested to know your opinion about Jack as an Aussie. Have you ever seen Doohan race? Have you watched him the F2 and different F3 seasons where he competed in the previous years? Are you aware of his racing record? I'm a pretty old fan of the feeder series and I've watched both Jack and Colapinto climb up the F1 ladder. In my opinion, Colapinto still has a lot to learn but I also think that Doohan is not fast enough to own an F1 seat, he doesn't seem to be bringing too much money or sponsors to Alpine and he's not a fan favorite who has marketing value or potential either.

I wasn't trying to make it about nationality, but wanted to mention it to show that I'm not trying to shit on Doohan, or say that Colapinto deserves the seat way more, because I'd actually love it if he does well. I wasn't trying to say that it's their nationality that would be the reason why they change seats.

I've never seen him race live because I'm not Australian but I did watch many races where he competed. Regarding the nationalities, I've seen many comments from Argentines and Brits who's main arguments are related to their flags (not so many Aussies to be fair but a lot of Brits who support Doohan due to the ties between both the UK and Australia, because Jack competed in several British formula series and especially because of the hate/rivalry they have due to the Malvinas-Falklands war). I expected not only your reply but also others from both Argentines and British fans. That's why I asked to put nationalities aside as I think that would be the best to have a healthy discussion. He doesn't seem to bring too much money either. Jack has been testing F1 cars since 2022 and he has always been beaten by their teammates or benchmarks, except for the last Abu Dhabi post season test, where he was 0.007s faster than Paul Aron, who was driving an F1 car for the first time in his life. Check Doohan's racing record. Download or search for Doohan's races on the previous years, there's a lot of footage of him on the feeder series. One thing I would add with Williams in this, If you look at the wording of the larger statements put out by both Williams and Alpine that says they have come to an agreement of 'securing the services' of Franco. I find that rather specific wording and it does make me wonder if there is a possible pull back clause if Franco doesn't get into an Alpine seat early enough and Williams needs a driver.
@OOpSjm14 күн бұрын
Everyone has stated there is most likely a "race seat" clause.
@PearlAquaOcean13 күн бұрын
@Redlingstein Yes, you are correct. But we don't know the length of Carlos' contract I believe and if he has a clause to get out should a front running team want him. It's also been rumoured Albon also had that kind of clause. We don't know the contracts as bystanders. And I personally believe Williams would not part with Franco with the possibility of him not getting on the grid without a clause to be able to pull him back in case one of their drivers left since the wording of the announcements by both teams seems particular to me.

@digitalnomad628614 күн бұрын
In my opinion, the only way for Doohan to keep his seat would be to beat Gasly in every way, which I see as difficult, since Pierre is a consistent and established driver. Doohan, on the other hand, speaking of evidence, is a rookie as well, his time in F2 is better, but he has Franco's pressure, he doesn't have Franco's sponsors, charisma and social media back up, he still has to prove himself and if his performance is not good; six races and he's on the reserve list. On the other hand, Franco's peaks, without having had training, with a car inferior to Albon's and being thrown to the lions in half a season; were practically equal to or better than Albon's times, even scoring points. After his last three races, they were chaotic and accident-filled, you have to take into account that Williams arrived at the end of the season in pieces, the car Franco was racing in had no improvements, no spare parts and with the accidents, they were never able to get it up to speed, besides: that Williams is clearly a car that if you take it to the limit you end up in the wall, it happened to Logan, Albon and Franco, it's not a coincidence; at the same time, and it's not a minor detail, Franco's grandfather died in that period, and I think if you have affection, it's something that affects your performance. Franco is a sensational driver, the charisma and performance of the kid, all of Latin America supports him and it's reflected in the numbers, I as an Argentine who has been watching F1 for years, would have preferred him in Williams with a progressive development, but the kid broke the paddock and destabilized F1 with his arrival. Everyone was amazed. Horner and Briatore are interested because they see something in him. And I think that if RB hadn't had the problem with Checo and his contract, there might have been a negotiation for Franco. Briatore doesn't pay 20M for a reserve driver. Franco has a lot of potential, he needs to settle down, learn, give the car back and push himself and the car to its limits. I think Franco is a style that is almost not found in F1 today. There are pilots and racers, Prost was a pilot, Senna was a racer. I see Franco as a racer.
@sizwehadebe169015 күн бұрын
Doohan needed a 2nd crack at both F3 and F2 to get decent results. Colapinto would not have left a reserve role for another one, unless there's a better chance of getting a drive at the second one. Plus he comes with loads of $$$ and he's fast (despite being crash-happy). This is terrible news for Jack.

I see this as a lose-lose situation for both Williams and Alpine. Williams just gave away their future prospect to direct midfield rival (on the bright side, that might be a sign that they have full trust in Sainz-Albon pairing, which is nice), while Alpine is going to look like an even bigger clown show if they replace their academy driver with someone from outside. Because, in that case - what is even a point of their driver's academy? And I personally don't think that Colapinto is some game-changing driver that could take team into the new bright future that's worth jeopardizing their driver academy for, so maybe that's why I'm pessimistic about this whole situation. We'll have to wait and see.

People keep pointing out to the money but Jackis the son of a 5x moto GP champion whose family is friends with the Schumaher. Yes, Franco has Argentina's backing, but why didn't Jack, who was born with all those connections, never cared about the price of pants nor had to make rice in the hotel electric kettle because he couldn't afford dinner, get sponsors money? People keep talking about money, but how many lf the european/US/oceanic drivers could survive in the same conditions of the latinamerican ones? And I don't think that any of them should go through that, making a 14 yo move alone to another continent so they get a chance in motorsports is worrysome in every single aspect, but the reason Checo and Franco got those sponsors was because they worked for them and needed them far earlier than the others. They had to grow up to survive while working for their dreams. They didn't just get sponsors because they are from LatAm.

This is sad for Doohan but he already signed his F1 contract and Briatore tried to get Sainz when he had to leave Ferrari, it clearly shows that Briatore's interest is not there because as soon as he saw the potential with Franco he jumped into it. And you all like to remember his crashes as if throughout the entire season he would have been the only one crashing, when his teammate also had issues in the car (maybe it was the car) but Briatore saw something in him and we know what he does when he sees someone with potential
