His Chenier was perfect in every phrase and every breath. When he sings "Io non ho amato ancora" (I've not fallen in love yet), that is a recitativo later on, he never seems to breath and pours his whole soul out.❤❤❤

Cristian - The libretto of Chenier is poetry of the highest class. Perhaps the finest in all opera. I could translate it for you. BUT google it. This aria in particular a poetic gem.
@cristianionita83594 ай бұрын
Why would you doubt I know it? I love the libretto, especially "Un dì all'azzurro...". I even attempted to translate it with rhymes and everything in my own language (Romanian).
@barrybernstein90494 ай бұрын
I wasn't being patronizing . I thought I was answering to someone who didn't know what the aria was about. It was just about the perfect role for Corelli. It may be that it was Gigli's favourite role. And his 1941 recording with the supervision of Umberto Giordano involved . Is one of the most impassioned recordings of opera . Also with Maria Caniglia. The very fine baritone Gino Bechi and a very young Giulietta Simionato. But although singing wise Gigli was at least a match for Corelli. Live on stage there is no contest, Corelli winning hands down , so to speak.

God, I love him so much. After so many years of hearing these exact same recordings, he is still one of the handful of artists I will take the opportunity to listen to again and again because each time I do, I am reminded of the dignity and nobility of the human spirit and endeavor. The hairs on the back of my neck still stand up in reverence and awe and when the singing is over, I experience the same release of joyful emotion the recorded audience does. Simply fantastic. Thank you, Lohengrin, for posting these clips. They are rediscovered gems throughout my week. Bravo!

@worldwidewendall6181 Жыл бұрын
Me neither - not exactly a melody one remembers.
@barrybernstein90494 ай бұрын
@@worldwidewendall6181 This is perhaps the finest poetic aria. In the whole of opera. May I suggest that you look for a translation on Google. By the way the rest of the opera is as good as it gets in its expressive poetry. As for what's going on, Andrea Chenier was a poet at the time of the French Revoution Who meets his death with his beloved Madelaine on the guillotine. Chenier was Gigli's favourite role. And along with Rigoletto and Turandot I would recommend Chenier with its 20 splendid tunes as a first introduction to opera. It will be shown live on June11 2024 in cinemas all over the world with a direct relay from Covent Garden. Just as an appendage. Puccini was so impressed with Chenier. That his Tosca composed after has certain similarities. One scene where a blind women is giving her last son alive to fight for the revolution. Is equal in pathos to anything by Puccini. And of course in the Academy Award winning Philidelphia one of the arias sung by Madelaine is central to the story. As the very sick Tom Hanks explains to Denzil Washington that this is his favourite music.

Corelli was good in his rep. He was not that great because he could not sing Handel, Mozart and earlier music with so much ornamentation nearly as well as others. To be GREAT one would have to excell at all styles. Callas qualified !
@Missedtrain-gu1fh3 ай бұрын
Which "others" are you referring too? And singing Handel and Mozart are quite different things. Callas interpretations of Handel was also not fully corresponding to the score. Corelli was one of the greatest tenors of all time because he brought some roles to a level of perfection that could not be matched since. And he has no pretension to be a Mozart singer.
