Really? Just a year after Philippe Jaroussky's album devoted to Porpora as Farinelli's teacher...pleeeeaaase!! Aren't there any other composers? I am completely dissapointed, Fagioli seemed to be a professional. At the end, too much ego

hahaha, such a poor answer! Unfortunately for you being a Jaroussky's fan has nothing to do with copying someone else idea for an album :D

Stepping aside from the debate of the singers themselves, you ask "Aren't there any other composers?" While there are certainly other composers who wrote both music for castrati and other music not written for castrati that countertenors today might sing, Porpora was a titan in his time. He wrote a wide range of highly regarded operas, collaborated and semi-discovered Metastasio, whose libretti are used ubiquitously across centuries of opera, taught Haydn, was a personal friend of Hasse, and trained not only Farinelli but also Caffarelli, among others. Are there other composers? Of course. But Porpora is a huge pull and a huge body of great work to record, regardless of who recorded it before. As an aside, while I appreciate both "Porpora: il maestro" and "Farinelli: Porpora Arias," I actually find it a little strange that Jaroussky chose to record only those arias associated with Farinelli written by Porpora, unlike on Fagioli's Caffarelli album or even Jaroussky's own Carestini album.

Christopher R. Skinner Frankly I'm surprised no major countertenor has put out a Handel album.

Ego?! Based on what? That he can sing better than an angel? You mistake love of craft for ego.

David Henson I think it is clear that he loves to sing and loves what his voice is capable of. Some might see that as "singing to hear himself sing," take issue with what they see as stylistic discrepancies from "accurate Baroque style," or as egoistical. I don't see it that way though. As you say, he loves the craft and he has a very unique instrument he loves to use in extreme ways, to tremendous effect.
