Great video and thanks for doing this with cutting! Another video I saw FROM ACORN, showed only touching off with a piece of paper. AND they did not even compensate for the paper thickness! If one wants to make truly accurate CNC cuts, you absolutely MUST cut metal and then measure it with a micrometer. There are just too many dynamic variables involved to do it statically with a piece of paper. In fact, one should even set a define speed and feed and skim cut as conditions for this setting. So great video! AWE! Then you blew it paper shims again ;-(. I understand, that if someone does not need best possible accuracy, then one can do paper shimming. But if you want the true absolute accuracy of the machine, one MUST cut metal and the use accurate micrometer measurements of the cut part to do your settings. At least you demonstrated the proper technique on the first tool which the guy from acorn never did.

I got a ? How do you set the lathe up as a gang tooling. And how do you make it automatically run the next tool rather then ask to change tools thanks hope to here back

At about 11:15, are you entering the radius or the diameter of the work after skim cutting?

Hello Franco, I found this video so useful and have successfully completed my tools. I am having a problem though that involves tooling and Intercon. I’m not getting the right finished diameters. It’s very frustrating and Ive spent several days trying to get the correct result. If I code my self for simple turning its fine. Looking at the GCode it produces it seems to be taking twice the depth of cut. I have tried using radius as well as diameter and I’m stuck. Any ideas? Mike

Can you explain how to set boring bars please. You're videos are brilliant and massively helpful. Thankyou
@hu5116
@hu5116 18 күн бұрын
I think all you need to do is to simply make a cut with your boring bar from the other side with the spin ball reversed and then that gives you the position of that cut. It’s then exactly the same as with the prior tools, just coming from the other side. As I mention in a prior comment, if you don’t need better than a few thousandths of accuracy, you can use the paper (or other) shim touch off technique. But if you want absolute accuracy (to the limits of what your machine can physically do) then you MUST cut metal and measure with an accurate calipers (measuring tenths of thousandths) to get the settings. IMHO of course.

Hi Franco, Was thinking of building a lathe similar to the one you have just set up. I would like to use a servo motor for the spindle motor. Can the Acorn be configured to use step direction for spindle control. This video will be very useful in setting up the offsets. Thanks Dave.

Dave Bassett Hi Dave. It is really easy to control a VFD with the acorn 0 to 10v analog output. I suspect there is a way to control a spindle with step direction but the Centroid guys will have to confirm. I'd check out the forum.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. For tool check positioning is there a way to move the Z first them the X or only the Z? I have a gang lathe also and both axis moving a once may cause a crash depending on tooling setup.

Nice Video! One question... how do you set the Z axis with a tool like Thread insert- cut off- round nose for facing. Cheers.
@FrancoCNC
@FrancoCNC 6 жыл бұрын
Well, that is a good question. For threading, I just eyeball it when I'm working at home. At my day job, I'll put the tool on a comparator or a measuring system like that and measure the distance from the cutting edge to whatever I'm able to touch off of. Then, I'll adjust the offset by that amount.

Great video Franco! Can you comment on whether you have to do this process each time you load a new stock. I am wanting to produce maybe 40-50 parts per day and it would be a pain to have to do this each time I insert new stock.

Hi. You only need to do this when you power up your machine.
@ktaylor678
@ktaylor678 4 жыл бұрын
@@FrancoCNC You have to do this entire process every time the machine is powered up? Or you just have to set part zero on your master tool on machine start up? Setting up all your tool offsets on every power up is terrible!
@FrancoCNC
@FrancoCNC 4 жыл бұрын
@@ktaylor678 No, you only have to define your tools once. If you have good limit switches, all you need to do on power up is home out your machine. If you don't have limit switches, then you need to touch off your master tool on power up. But all of the other tools will be good to go.

Franco how do you set up the tool reference for your drill or tap or center drill (your tool #3 in the video)? Could you explain or show a video about it? Thanks

For the Z axis why can't you just put a dial indicator in the spindle, touch off your first tool and zero the indicator. Then simply bring each tool up to the dial indicator and make the appropriate adjustment. It's much faster and more accurate than goofing around with the feel of shim stock. All in all I think your videos are excellent.
@FrancoCNC

Hi. You certainly could do that and it would work just fine. I tried to follow what was described in the manual to help establish common ground and a point of reference. Thanks.
