I also converted spindle control on my PM30 using the schematic linked in your older video. Thanks for posting that. The acorn also adjust for belt position using a ratio parameter for high / low. I have also considered adding a spindle encoder and found what may be an easier way. If you pull the front plate off you will see the index wheel used for the speed display. There is a company that makes a encoder ring and reader that could replace the index wheel or possibly sit along side it. I can dig up the information again if anyone is interested.

I'd love to see that encoder ring!

@@FrancoCNC Here is the company,; www.rls.si/eng/products/rotary-magnetic-encoders. I will also look for the forum post that was discussing these encoders.

I added spindle control on my pm25mv with acorn using the info from your video with that 0-5v board. It's working good. Next is to add a encoder. Keep up the good work.

Think I'm going to have enough to order one this weekend. Decided to go with the PM-728 over the 25. I've seen a few different parts made in China for motorcycles and firearms and have always found and issue with them whether it's the hardness of the metal or the tolerances, theres usually something sub-par when you buy something from China so figured itd be worth it to pay more and get a bigger machine that's made in Taiwan, better QC and 5yr. Warranty is worth the extra money IMO. Probably wont be doing CNC conversion anytime in the near future, only plans are customizing parts for myself or 1 off parts, but definitely going to save these videos just incase as plans change down the road alot of times.. Enjoying all the videos you've done on these machines, looking forward to more!

I did a timing belt driven encoder setup on my G0602. Printed the encoder pulley to match the sprocket on the lathe. Higher RPM might need a pulley that is 'truer'. Plan on doing a PDB down the road and this should not interfere. Keep the vids coming.

I’m loving this series, and will eventually convert this same machine to CNC. But at the moment I have one on order and it will be used manually only for a couple of years. What if any improvements would you suggest for manual use?

Great video! Looking forward to seeing this completed! Safety note: Does CNC stand for Coffee-n-Cup?

That dual relay configuration, where it's impossible for them both to be energized at the same time is called an "interposing relay" configuration. I'm not correcting you, just adding in some terminology.

Thank you for that. I'm not always up to speed with the correct terminology and I appreciate the help.

Hey Franco, thanks for all your info you have put out. Super helpful! I am converting a 728VT right now. I got the speed control adapter board with the cnc kit from PM. Im kinda at a loss as what I exactly need to do to install it and connect it to Acorn. Also, I thought you said the link to print that encoder bushing was here but, I dont see it. Any chance I could chat with you about this? Thanks, Josh

Is this going to be CNC only, or can can you choose between cnc and manual?

Hey Franco I’ve converted my pm25 to full cnc spindle control. Looks very similar to the 728. If you want to chat and compare notes let me know. I’m in the Facebook acorn group.

Franco do you plan on using the ball screw kit that PM is offering for the CNC conversion on the PM-728VT? I am thinking of buying the PM-728V-T and in the future converting to CNC

Franco, love your videos, you inspire. Just picked up 3 stepperonline Nema 24 closed loop steppers with the CL57Y controller for my Smithy 1220XL 3 in 1 conversion. What do you recommend for power supplies. Also I see you use ACORN, how does that compared to Mach systems. Keep up the great videos

Do you know how the machine and electronics know how to properly display RPM between the High and Low speed belt settings? Just curious.

Have you disassembled the z axis already? I took it apart to take some measurements for my own attempt at a CNC conversion and the bevel gear assembly was a real pain to take apart and even more of a pain to get back together again. I feel like there should be an easier way. Maybe there's a better order of operations. Any tips?

I took mine apart also. Did the X, Y, and then Z. Did take a bit to get the gear assembly out, the keeper on the handle shaft made it not just 'com apart'. I don't plan to reinstall it. Ball screws have shipped :)
