I've been skating for years and years but one thing that humbles me is buying new trucks. I consistently feel like it's the first pair of trucks I've ever bought and never have any clue what the numbers mean. I just hold them up make sure they are about the same width as the deck and I'm good to go. Indy's all the way. Recently I got the hollow Indys, pretty rad. Definitely feels nice and light.

Here's a mind-blowing idea, how about we start calling trucks that fit an 8 inch board, an 8-size truck. A 7.75 would be called a 7.75, and so on.
@natfingerboard
@natfingerboard 4 жыл бұрын
Because even tho the axle might be the same size among all of them, the hanger itself may change, and vice versa. companies need to get their shit together first. The problem goes beyond just what those numbers mean, it's also where do they apply, are you mesuring the axle, the hanger, the hanger + washers, the axle minus or with the threads? if the axle is X size how long should the hanger be, and so on.

Truck companies base model naming verbiage by hanger width... just that some brands Tensor and Venture, Royal use inches 5.25, 5.0, 5.5" ect and Indy and Thunder use millimeters 139,144/48, 149mm ect... Ace is something else completey where the truck model numbers/naming verbiage has no relation to an actual truck measurement Ace 00, 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66. Where things get ultra confusing is varing axle widths and truck height for each brands truck models and then on top of that the true accuracy of each brands measuresments compared to there trucks naming/model verbiage. Tensor is the most true and accurate to there model names... A Tensor 5.25 has a 5.25" hanger 5.5s have a 5.5" hanger, 5.75s have 5.75" and 6.0s of course are 6.0"... vary simple to understand once you check the size charts but they dont have as many truck models as other brands and it could use a little tweaking in axles widths to perfect things as a industry standard but its arugably the most simple measurement and accurate system overall when you compare brand charts. Indy system is fairly accurate as well... indy 129s have a 128mm hanger width, 139s have a true 137mm hanger, 144s have a 143mm 149s have 150mm, 159 have 156mm, 169s have 160mm hangers and 215 have a 187mm hanger...so a bit wacky with hanger widths vs naming/model verbiage but once you know it you know it, ovrall its not terrible and with a little tweaking could be standardized across. Thunder and Venture on the other hand, have measures all over the place compared to the actual measuresments of the hanger widths that they use for model verbiage... again those that ride them get it but they make everything much more confusing with the model verbiage vs the actual hanger widths heights etc etc... I'm not even gonna attempt to type it out and instead just link you to the sizing breakdown. This website has one of the best break downs of Indys, Thunder, Venture, and Tensor showcasing the actual measurements of the axles and hangers and heights for each truck brands model line-up. @t

Interesting topic, thanks for putting this out Nine Club. It would be dope if we could come to some unified consensus on truck sizes in terms of axle width for sure. One thing I wish truck companies would do is put out more info on the truck height though. It's amazing how you can feel the difference in truck height from just a few millimetres difference, but that information would help a lot when buying trucks. As someone pretty new to skating I've learned a lot on Indy's, but Im finding that a lower setup with Thunders or Tensor alloys (especially with boards with steep kicks like FA's) are what feels ideal at this point. Stating the difference in height based on baseplate construction is helpful as well.

That's not the only difference, each brand also affects the wheelbase differently, why do you think it's difficult to put on Ventures(the T-tool is at an angle when trying to tighten the nuts at the outside the hanger, I used a wrench), is pushed out further than the rest.

The big 3 in the truck world used to be casted at the same place (Ermico) for years and it’s crazy that they all used different sizing because the mold lengths for each brands tier match up. Marketing is a beast you have to deal with as a company and a consumer. Deluxe dist. even used to sell Indys (raws) at one point in time because of their tie to Ermico. I always wondered why NHS didn’t sell Thunder and Venture (raws), you know like an even trade off. Ah, the skate industry and it’s madness.

Indy, Bones, Shorty's etc etc aftermarket bushings are without a doubt noticeably different durometers anyone thats ever tried various bushing duro's knows this... but he wasnt referring to after market bushings well he was discussing bushing duro, he was referencing stock bushing color not resulting in different duro's for example Indy trucks with stock orange bushing are 90a as goes for Indys trucks with stock black bushings, or stock blue bushings etc the colors of stock bushings vary for looks and aesthetics only and are always 90a regardless of color... and once again, Indy aftermarket bushings on the other hand do infact have varying duros by colors but the duro variation isnt a result of color dye... its a result of changing the bushing urathane formula.

Trucks mm measurement is just measuring the hanger though, not the axle, which is why Venture is like 5 and 5.5 and shit because they decided to measure their hangars in inches. It really only makes sense to measure the axle width these days, but probably back in the day before standard popsicle shapes they had more reason to measure the hanger widths.

@Timo Withnail I think there's an old school mentality that you're not supposed to think about details--it's just either you can do a thing or you can't. I think the people that excel are often the ones that see through that and aren't afraid to nerd out on something so they can understand it and figure out their way of doing whatever the thing is. The ones who burn out are the ones who are naturally gifted but never learn how to work or think it through when things start to escape their natural ability. I figure that guy thought like that, maybe?

According to Thunder's website, what Frank said isn't true. The heights of the trucks vary depending on the base plate. Whether it's forged or Team. And also it depends on the width of the trucks. Maybe it's less of a difference than what it was previously, if they had low and high versions. Personally, I find the "Team" naming confusing also. Personally, I think they should simplify the naming and get rid of the word Team. I wanted to get Thunders for awhile but held off, because I couldn't figure out which one to get. I was concerned that they would be too low and would have wheel bite problems. I ended up getting the hollow lights which I like a lot. They don't turn as good as Indys though. But, I think that may not necessarily be a bad thing. They seem easier to control for things like manuals.

The transparent colour bushings are _definitely_ softer by default. There's no way it could be just as hard. Just physically impossible. It's like the whole white wheels versus coloured wheels thing, you can't throw a dye in there and expect it to not mess up the material. But.. the problem is more like you'd not easily distinguish a 92a from a 97a or something close to that. You could perhaps notice it in terms of maximum truck tightness and how the 92a would continue to bend easier. But it most likely wouldn't matter too much. Keep in mind the 'standard' bushings you'd get with trucks are pretty soft actually. 'Medium' bushings for most brands are like between 90a to 95a or something. And we all know that durometer rating isn't a universal standard by any stretch. My Ricta Chrome 99a wheels seem pretty much as hard as and slightly more slidey than the Spitfire F4 conical fulls 101a, which is just plain silly. If you touch the wheels one definitely feels more like rubber and oily, where the other one feels more like a more dry plastic, but it wouldn't surprise me much if the two are pretty much on par in terms of actual durometer. I'm also aware some wheels need to wear down a bit to show their true face, but the Ricta Chrome 99a have been used quite a lot already and don't seem to change much.
@DeafBlindMan
@DeafBlindMan 3 жыл бұрын
a) Skate durometers are made up. Shore hardness scales stop at 100 max, there is no 101 etc.. any value over 90 or below 10 is inaccurate and another scale should be used. b) The difference between 90 92 and 94 indy bushings is very noticeable even if its only 2. c) Use the enter key for more readability :)

Just not true. Indy sells a huge range of bushings that are all solid colored, and have a large difference in durometer. All the way from 88a-96a. Thunder makes 90-100a in solid and clear colors. And many different colors of 90a bushings.

Very sad to say....Indy is now made in Chiina. No respect for that. Bring it back to CALI ! Actually anywhere in NorthAmerica can manufacture trucks no prob. Lets start making quality in our home Country. Not quantity(Chiina), we need quality(CAN/US) !!

I’m always blown away by the lack of understanding here. First, every measurement chart is on the company websites. Second, but out a tape measure and measure the axle if you need certainty. Also, what the fuck? Thunder does still have hi and lo technically ... it comes down to wether or not the base plate is cast or forged. All info is on the company websites! 😂

@TysonHook-22-

Shock pads are never aligned perfectly to truck base plate widths... Assumign you have a 1/8" shock pad... shock pads are made of soft rubber whereas risers are hard plastic. The solution to shock pad overhang is... you setup your deck with the trucks and shock pads, take a sharp utility knife and slice/mark the rubber shock pad to match the trucks base plate size. disassemble your board and then finish cutting through the shock pad on a cutting board with the utility knife and a ruler... otherwise slicing it completely off well still attached to your board your gonna also slice into the bottom veneer of your deck (possibly creating a weak point) and its generally just much more safe, simple and less ackward to cut the shock pad on a cutting board with a ruler compared to well setup on your board. If yyou dont trim down your shock pad being that its a soft rubber the slight overhang of the baseplate will make contact and slocw you down during nose and tail slides since you wont lock up against the trucks metal baseplate properly with interferace from the overhanging rubber shock pad. Shock pads are great at preventing pressure cracks and slightly cushionng impacts/crusing... and of course change your truck height which directly effects pop/timing by changing your boards nose and tail contact timing/ollie launch angle. a 1/8" shock/riser pad is roughly 3mm of additional truck height... so for example a 55mm indy hi is now 58mm with a 1/8 shock/riser pad. Tensor and Thunder which are 52mm high would equaly a 55mm with a 1/8" shock pad

@@gonzo13ist ohh okay, I'm use to using indy, mini logo or diamond shock pads myself... but looking at images of the thunder riser pads are you not able to slide the riser back to be flush with the front facing base side of your trucks?... A little over hang on the inner truck side (towards center of the board) shouldnt matter as long as the riser is flush with the nose and tail sides of the truck baseplate.

Durometer of bushings makes a huge difference, but as with all skating, just the way they put it, it's really up to your personal preferances
@TysonHook-22-
@TysonHook-22- 4 жыл бұрын
He is referrring to brands stock bushing color not mattering... there all 90a durometer stock regardles of color (except theive which use medium bones bushings stock which are 91a) Just like how they say color wheels are less durable then white wheels (has some true merit Ive read) or that certain deck veneer colors are weaker or stronger then others (99.9% myth), some people also believe that the various dye colors of stock bushings feel different to ride and are different durometers which just isnt true, 90a is standard stock bushing duro across all brands with the exception being Thieve trucks with bones 91a stock bushings...

I have some Ishod hollows and they came with the white bushings. Everybody would always say that's the whites are Thunder's best bushings. I blew them out within like a 3 months, then I got some Bones and I liked em but I blew those out too! So I bought I set of the Thunder bushing's & I went with blue (they didn't have white), most were telling me I should've just waited but I actually love blues & I think they look sick. They've lasted prolly almost a year with no blowouts, give prolly didn't skate quite as much this last year but still. So I really think it's just preference on what you like. I think a lot of the quality is based on how old they are & how long they've been sitting on the shelf at the the shop!!

I can personally say that bushing durometer does matter. I ride bones hard with my trucks pretty much as tight as they can be tightened, no matter what brand truck. If I tried this with the stock bushing of most trucks they would be crushed completely. There are others out there but, bones bushings have stayed consistent over about 20 years of skating and are pretty easy to get your hands on.

The dye actually affects the urethane. It is only to a slight degree, but you can actually feel the slight difference in characteristics. It is most noticeable in downhill wheels because they take a lot of abuse. Different colors will slightly affect the wear/durability and also the amount of grip they have.

The die affects the urethane. Same with cotton and wool and anything else. If you get a quality died shirt they will be slightly different color to color. One dye will cause premature wear while another dye may leave the shirt feeling much more fluffy. Same with bushings. No, I'm not saying some bushings are fluffy, that would be silly. Certain colors will have better bounce and others will crumble at some point while other don't. So in my opinion bushing color makes a difference. In short dies can be corrosive. Do I personally have a preference, no I'm older and haven't skated enough lately to beat the bag out of a bushing in a long, long, long time but they are different.
