Growing up South of Pasadena in the early 80's I had two sweet hills to bomb down on the way to school. One day I had the perfect crash, the wabi sabi of my skating career, on the second hill just passing the entrance to The Old Mill. I was in full tuck, head first, arms behind my back like a speed skater, and I hit a magnolia tree seed pod. Physics happened and I did a clean front flip to perfect backpack and soles of my feet landing. I slid/ran it out; no trauma, no road rash, kept using the backpack and the deck was fine. It was a shortened G%S Pine Design with Trackers and Yo Yo's for the historians out there.

There's a crew of people in San Francisco who do something similar but with the ability to stop if needed. They use longer boards (longboards) and softer wheels that let them slide their board sideways like a snowboarder to control their speed. It seems like most of them if not all of them wear helmets. If you look up "sunset sliders san francisco" you can find some stuff on KZbin. It seems like for this crew (in the New Yorker video) part of the appeal is not having control
@duncanhunter27143 жыл бұрын
Trust me these guys have control and are hyper focussed . They even know how to fall at this speed. I promise you will never feel more alive than rattling down a hill on a skateboard in clothes you can wear to the bar afterwards. No helmet / gloves required.
@OfficerFloofles3 жыл бұрын
@DanielBx look up James Kelly or Josh Neuman raw runs. they go like 60 mph down mountain roads. it's not kooky to ride downhill using equipment built for that purpose. bombing on a street deck with little trucks and rock hard wheels and no helmet / no slide gloves is unnecessary. all you can do is go in a straight line or carve a bit and there's no way to stop if something happens outside of your control like a car pulling out of a driveway or a truck blocking an intersection. even people like Sergio Yuppie (look him up too) who ride hard wheel setups just as fast if not faster than the guys in this vid can still stop if they need to, and they do crazy tricks while going down the hill. riding a street deck down a hill with no way to stop is just as impractical as trying to kickflip a giant downhill longboard deck in a skatepark. your attitude is equivalent to hating on a downhill mountain bike rider for not using a bmx bike with pegs on it when they go down the mountain. if it's your thing to bomb on a street deck without being able to stop then fine but don't hate on people for using equipment designed for their chosen activity.

@@OfficerFloofles shut up nerd. It’s called being casual. Skate with the homies, go the a bar, get some food, have a smoke sesh, skate some more. How fun does all that sound while you’re LUGGING AROUND A GIANT LONGBOARD AND HOLDING A HELMET

I don't get the hate. Downhill bombing and longboarding are very similar but different experiences. I have mad respect for both skaters and longerboarders. Let people do what they enjoy :)

'You can assess risk' Hmmm you can maybe assess risk re your own abilities, but the Traffic and tarmac is always gonna win in a fight. Terrifying. That pull of adrenaline and skill is always gonna be there for them. Just wish they'd at least get past the vanity bit and wear protective head gear.

I really love and respect what they are doing. Hill bombing on quads is one of my favorite things in the world but PLEASE feature skaters who wear a helmet AT MINIMUM. Kids see these videos and think they can do the same thing and end up with life changing traumatic brain injuries. And it's not even kids- anyone who skates could get one no matter how advance and proficient in skating they are. Even the skaters in this video touched on how dangerous and scary this is. All it takes is one bad fall on your head and then life as you knew it is done.

good luck finding skaters who wear helmets. There's like... four or five of them lmao
@MatthewMurraycogswoth3 жыл бұрын
@@Residual.Selfimage There's tons of longboarders who wear helmets. Unlike it skating culture, longboarding and cruiserboarding down huge hills and mountains emphasize wearing a helmet. Check out people like Josh Nueman, one of the most ballsy people on earth with the kind of runs he does. And he always does it with a helmet. Take care of yourself so you can skate longer. Edit: typo

Bombing hills is so fun but I recommend everyone to start small and really get comfortable on the board. Even if you can't do tricks, comfortablity is a skill that will give you confidence. When your confident you will eventually master your board and be able to stop correctly. That my friends will save your life! LOOK AT THE GROUND OCCASIONALY WHEN YOU SKATE. A PEBBLE CAN RUIN YOUR DAY.
