I'm not only amazed by pretty much everything in that space, but also by the fact that he remembers the names of the people who made him those plumb bobs... Amazing memory given that I often can't even remember a measurement walking from the bench to the saw lol.

So enjoyable to hear him talk about woodworking. Even more because he reminds me of my grandfather who also came from Hungary. Although my grandpa has been gone since 1973 as soon as I heard Frank speak I heard that unmistakable Hungarian accent. What a pleasure to listen to and watch. Thank you for posting this.

Boy, you'd better be aces with the dust-collector set-up in that place. And I've seen old-school guys with antique moulding-plane inventories that were big enough to take up an entire wall in a normal rectangle-shaped building. Frank's plane collection is much reduced from that category. But that Plumb-bob collection! Ha! In the space of about four feet, it's a world-class museum of the history of plumb-bobs, all by itself! THAT's the part that blew my mind on this tour.

I am most struck by his sharp mind. He calls forth names of people in such a way to make me believe his life and his past are as clean and organized as appears his present. He is a testament to living well. I also like how his tools appear to be his friends. He knows the name of each, the purpose of each, the character of each as though they were his children and I suppose his real mastery is in coaxing each child to perform to its utmost. I think in this case, his skill is not in creating the beauty of the objects he makes but the joy he feels in the journey of each making. In this sense, his shop truly is a place of spiritual uplifting.

Nice...but I'm a little confused, because in the hour long video Frank made for Felder about their combination tables he said they were so good that if he were to do a new shop he'd definitely put one in...and here we are, a new shop, a few nice Festool products boxed up, but no Felder 5 function combination table.
@WoodAndShop
@WoodAndShop 7 жыл бұрын
LOL. You'll have to ask Frank about that! But it sounds like he was saying that if were going to setup a production shop, he'd use Felder. His current shop is more of a retirement shop that doesn't need the big commercial machines. Gotta love the music on the Felder video :)

Edit: OK, maybe Hate it is too strong. I have much respect for the man and I'm thankful for his opinion on the tools for inviting us in to his space. Just too fancy to work in there - he's clearly too old for making major sawdust piles, so maybe it's just right for him. To each his own - that's what's so great about America, individual liberty and the free market. Hate it. Especially the doors. Not a real workshop, just a show room for an old timer... tool museum comment was correct.

@@WoodAndShop I am (happy for people). And congrats to him - he deserves it. Nothing about that is in logical conflict with my earlier comment. That is not a workshop I'd ever want to work in - it's just a showroom. Everybody's different. My opinion is just as valid as yours.
