After this concerto's beautiful extended lyrical opening, the piano's entrance is disquieting, bringing us into a gentle though incisive reality, the movement then ending in an enigmatic sigh. The 'largo' returns us to the dreamlike state into which we were first lulled. The finale begins with a playful fanfare and a passage of Shostakovich-like good humor, only to be interrupted by a doleful interlude introduced by the soloist. The return to a more optimistic but also more sober atmosphere brings this distinctive concerto to its conclusion.

by the way, it's a shame there isn't a KZbin video of your piano concerto. I love that work very much and it deserves to be heard more.

A work in the very personal neoclassical style of Frank Martin. We are far away from Stravinski here, whose influence marked some prominent scores of Frank Martin. The mood is lyric and even sometimes elegiac. More ryhmic sections may appear, but they keep this general mood. The form is firmly handled, as always in Martin's works. The piano starts after a long introduction of the orchestra (about 4 minutes).

While some of Martin's music is a tiny bit too arid or dissonant for my general taste (hey, I have my conservative moments), I absolutely LOVE both of his piano concerti. The first work of his I ever was in contact with was the Ballade for Flute, which I accompanied for a flautist friend. I particularly love Martin's approach to contrapuntal material.

@@Alix777. Exactly my point! Writing "Just wow!" on its own is fine. As is Erik's "wow". My comment was referring to when someone writes "Wow. Just wow!". One use of the word "wow" is enough to let everyone know you're gobsmacked. Twice is overkill and superfluous.(Besides, a comment is not JUST "Wow", if you add "just wow" after the "Wow" is it. Its been changed from "Wow" to become "Wow. Just wow!".). A bit like saying "In this sentence there's one picture of a banana-🍌,just one🍌!". When as anyone can see, there's actually 2 pictures of a banana in the sentence.

Almost 4 minutes until the piano starts 😊 maybe Brahms was still longer?
@darrylschultz6479
@darrylschultz6479 5 жыл бұрын
Yes,I have little doubt Brahms always considered himself a much finer exemplar of the introductory phase of matters compositional than some young upstart like Frank Martin would probably have been thought to be if he'd been born early enough for Brahms to become aware of him.

@@FleuveAlphee I've just now revisited this video and noticed your question in response to my comment. I must admit that I'm struggling myself to know what my point was at the time, but I think it may have been an attempt to entertain, by contemplating how Brahms would have looked down his nose at Frank Martin for taking less time than him to introduce the piano.
