This concerto was composed for Badura-Skoda, who made a studio recording of it with the composer conducting. Like other works that Martin wrote in the 1960s, when he was in his 70s, it is rather unsettled and dark. Thank you for posting this very focused performance, which benefits greatly from having a world-class orchestra to support the soloist. :-)

Franck Martin deserves to be better known. He as a free artsist. This second piano concerto by Frank Martin is quite different from the foirst one. It begins by a toccata-like solo, then the trumpet takes the lead , then the piano goes on with its toccata style, etc. up to a second section introduced by the saxophon, contrapucted by other instruments, and so on. This is a vigorous but sensitive music, which is quite characteristic of the style of Frank Marin, always close to contrapunctal expression.

Absolutely tremendous, with a surprising jazzy flavour, not far from Jolivet's Second Trumpet Concerto. And another proof that clever composers can write excellent 12 tone music.

Martin's music is not really 12-tone. There is usually a tonal center (like Berg) but more than that he never confines himself strictly to a row.
