I worked at a manga studio here in Japan back in 2005-2007 and apprenticed under the creator of Fist of the North Star, and was an assistant on the prequel, Fist of the Blue Sky. But yeah usually whatever has the cover feature, or is popular, get a few color pages printed. Also, after the initial weekly run of each manga goes out, we would go back and clean up anything that was rushed or rough due to the strict deadlines, and print the fixed versions in the tankobon. A lot of pages were almost completely changed. It was a wild working enviroment. Would love to share my experiences sometime! Cheers guys!!

You can't just say you were Hara Tetsuo's assistant like it's nothing, tell us more! How much of the backgrounds did you guys do and how much direction for them you got from Hara sensei? How did your work day usually look? How does the job application process work?

Frank’s back! With Akira! Hell yes! Look guys, you’ve hung, and continue to hang out with my favorite modern artists, Mignola, Darrow, Quitely, so great! The channel has become such a great resource of comic interviews and history ON TOP of just being damn entertaining. Don’t stop!

Frank Quitely--what a decent human being. He still has joy in comix, and humility in the presence of the masters though he needn't pay deference to any other talent.

At about 1:36:00 when they're looking at the 2 page spread - just before he begins to merge with the jet - I think Jim starts to describe this effect but I love this approach of really rendering out the jet on the right hand page, so that it feels both extremely heavy and imposing against the smaller figure and maybe draws attention to the magnitude of the interaction, but it also jars the reader by slowing down such a fast object and sort of pauses time in the narrative by revealing the detail not perceptible when objects are in motion. I'm probably using too many words to describe, but I love this idea of rendering and detail as a means of managing narrative and reading pace/time.

This is probably my favourite video of yours, guys. The fanboy-level drooling over each panel is so relatable, it’s like I’m there with you! And Eddie’s reactions to Otomo’s backgrounds made me chuckle: ‘Those f***ing buildings, man!…’ ; ‘Draw that in a day, Jimmy!’ ! So great to have Frank there with you too- he is the closest thing we have in the West to Otomo imo. So humble and down to earth too, just like Ed and Jim. Thanks for this great read-through, fellas. PS, just picked up Hulk GD Madness and it is epic! Big congrats, Jim!🤟

I think the first translated manga to keep the original lettering was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Viz offered it in regular and special editions, with the special edition being unflipped with original sound effects. Definintely the first one I remember, and a few years before Mixx/Tokyopop would start doing it as standard.

Interesting to see what stuck out to y'all drawing nerds. Akira is a real masterpiece, pretty much unrivaled in scope and execution. If you guys are interested in layout and flow, editing, cuts, transitions, pacing, directing the readers eye, etc. I have a real dark horse candidate for the book that does that the best. Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth, a book that would probably be mostly forgotten if not for a tv show. His art style rubs a lot of people the wrong the way, but I'm talking about mechanical execution of layouts and editing in support of a narrative. Especially when talking about a book with an extended run, nothing I have found does pacing better. I don't think that level of precision could have been possible with a writer/artist team, the subtlety of focus would be so hard to get across in a script. If Akira cribs from Kubrick, Sweet Tooth cribs from Coen Brothers.

Amazing trick of the trade revealed by Otomo during a public event at Angoulème in 2016 (in japanese and french). Incredible to learn how Otomo created personalized screentones after Gustave Doré's book of prints 'Don Quixote' to draw various textures and shadings in Akira.
