The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Yes we do, maybe not exclusively like it was in the 30's-50's but there are plenty of artist who still keep this still of jazz alive.

What a treat! Yes, We Have No Bananas was a big hit from a century ago, and it's a special treat to see the song's composer singing it on the Ed Sullivan Show! Thanks for posting!

Indeed, one of the biggest hits of the '20's! Written in 1923 by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn.

This is one of the Sullivan ASCAP shows in which composers from the history of popular music sang their famous songs, as well as appearing alongside contemporary artists. As Michael Tuz mentioned, Frank co-wrote this song, "Yes, We Have No Bananas" in 1923 with Irving Cohn, and it became a standard. It would also be great to see Will Oakland on this episode; a top-selling tenor from the earliest days of the recording industry singing "Machusla" as listed in episode guides. This episode may contain the only footage of him that exists. I've certainly never seen any. Also, it would be fun to see Mitch Miller and his Gang perform their number one hit song of the time, "Yellow Rose of Texas".

@@jadezee6316 It's a novelty standard, sung in part or in whole in hundreds of movies and TV shows over the decades. It was even sung in an episode of "Growing Pains" in the 1980's. It was certainly one of the most recognizable songs from the 1920's.

There was a newspaper competition at the time this song came out. They asked what was the question to which the song title was the answer. The winner suggested: ‘Are the monkeys starving?’

The bananas we ate in 1956 are extinct. They were wiped out by a virus. I still remember the sweet ones in my childhood. Today's are nice but kind of chalky and firm and certainly not as sweet.
