This was at the Woodstock Luthiers Exhibition in Woodstock, NY - October 24, 2010. One of those amazing moments! It begins from the end of "Nuages" and unfortunately ends when my camcorder battery dies... still pretty damn good.

With respect to Frank & Julian, rhythm ace VINNIE RANIOLO deserves wider recognition. A GROOVE so deep, so phat & wide provided the ideal playground for the protagonists to play in. Well done Vinnie. Well played guys. pcHux.

Julian is very unusual in his phrasing and never competes.He is way beyond that.From what I hear from him the piece he is playing or the situation he is in will cause him to play down to fit,another words he is a true artist

Frank is a player you never try to cut. Julian competes a lot, but he respects his elders.

Ok, wait... Vignola makes a descending phrase and Julian immediately plays a second line for that without looking at the guitar... no words. Check 3:46

Yeah, Julian's solo on the two minute mark is just out of this world and the interplay from 4:30 makes me want to run out into the street and hug strangers.

Wow, Julian gets that old L5 to spank just as much as Frank's louder and brighter Parker. I think it's so skilled of Julian to stay in the "style" of the tune without going outside the fringe, Django would have dug him. Frank too 1+, great melding of consciencness.

I think Julian's phrasing, lines and so on show a great deal of maturity. I don't think he is ever technical for the sake of being technical. I hold this solo up as a great example of playing outside in a melodic way. I think Frank should be commended for providing a great response to Julian: a straight forward and motivic solo. Frank realized after Julian's solo it would be excessive to play lines, so he opted to be melodic.It wasn't his greater skill, it was just a good artistic choice.
@bakerrorick6 жыл бұрын
My take on Julian is that has gone beyond technique, everything totally internalized and in service to the moment. Just revisiting this before reposting on Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase page.

You must be joking, right? Sure, Julian could learn learn some things from Frank, but you aren't implying that you think Frank is that much better than Julian, are you? I much rather listen to Julian, but that's just me. However, you can't seriously think Julian Lage is worse than Frank Vignola
